Whisper quieted down as Morgan bent down, and they could not have been more thankful for that. It would help them remain undetected if there was anything dangerous here in the hedge maze. In fact, they couldn't get the frightening thought of something as dangerous as the treasure chest mimic had been last year in one of the summer months in that marooned ship. They moved as quickly as possible as they crawled between the hedgerows using the hole in the leaves that Whisper had located for them, hoping against hope that they wouldn't be attacked by a creature while their back was turned. They could only really see ahead of them and it was super hard to hear anything that wasn't the swish of the leaves around them as they moved. Whisper ducked down into Morgan's pocket further, to keep from being thwacked in the face by any of the hedge limbs.[19] YZ5pHMla

It both took an incredibly terrifying amount of time and no time at all to get through to wherever it was that the little 'tunnel' (if it was even long enough to call it that) lead to. Morgan immediately rose up, and glanced around them while brushing all of the discarded leaves and bits of loam and roots that had managed to become stuck to their knees and palms. Whisper sticks her little head out of their labcoat pocket yet again to look around as well. It was much brighter here than it was in the hedge maze wall of course, but it still managed to take Morgan by surprise. Was it somehow brighter here than it had been earlier? It sure felt like it did. They rubbed one of their eyes as soon as their hand was clean enough not to get debris in them, fingers up beneath their glasses.

The last month that Morgan had been here without Kaodie, they had managed to find a few really neat things. They'd had to leave early due to getting rained out, however, so they dragged theirself around as soon as they had the time to do it in order to take Whisper out for another foray into the mansion grounds. While they would really rather be out with Kaodie right now than Whisper, they really wanted to spend more time with her before she grew. Who knew when she was going to be ready to grow up, anyway? They wanted to make sure that she was well accustomed to them and also well nourished before they took her to the museum to get her checked out for growth. So to the mansion grounds they went! April was one of their more favorite month themes anyway. Tiken Tekai was always a lot of fun, as long as one managed not to be the butt of the joke that is! Morgan was at the gate before too long, that outer gate that they had stopped at to look at take notes of what they could see beyond the gate so long ago. Nowadays they hardly did that. They'd done most of the research that they could do on this area without doing an specific work long ago, and now they mostly just went to see if anything changed or if they encountered anything new. It always felt pretty rewarding to go, they were quite used to it at this point- it was like visiting an old friend but without the stress of actual humanoid interaction. Morgan reached down towards their labcoat pocket in order to pat Whisper on the head. She had her little head poked out of the pocket that she rode in. She hadn't gotten any bigger since Morgan had received her, and perhaps that would have made them anxious if they weren't so sure that she was fine and healthy. [2] mupCffCK

Whisper always seemed eager to go on adventures with Morgan, probably because she quite liked to look at novel sights that weren't the same-old walls of Morgan's estate. Of course, Morgan figured that she also probably quite liked being able to go places without having to walk around herself. After all, she was small enough to ride in Morgan's pocket practically the whole time! Perhaps, with any luck, Morgan would have time this year to take her out on more of these little adventures until she was ready to grow up. Morgan doesn't wait at the gate like they normally do. They knew that there was a very good chance that once they passed the simple outer gate that the grounds beyond would be twisted and strange. Tiken Tekai was a lot like that, and they didn't expect it to be any different this year. They put their hand out and pushed the gate open with the meat of their palm. [3] CLiVSwat

Just beyond the gate, Morgan already caught sight of something gleaming in the light nearby. They halted where they stood for a moment, since they couldn't shake that feeling of dread that they got just thinking of what kind of tricks the 'mansion' could be wanting to perform on them just by luring them to something. However, it didn't take long for Whisper to notice the gleaming objects, since they were so brightly colored- and of course she absolutely Freaked Out. She shrieked and gestured and Morgan just knew that they weren't going to get any rest unless they checked out those objects, since Whisper liked 'shinies' so much. "Fine, fine critter." Morgan murmured. They walked to the items with a slightly dejected slump, and bent down to inspect them- but they did try to keep their face as far away from them as possible. What if they had a noxious gas that would spray them if they got close enough? [4] u1pVAdMZ

Hoping against hope that they would not be attacked over these strange oblong objects, the human reaches out for them to pick one up in their hands. The oblong objects were brightly colored -the one in their hand was a forest to lime green swirling color with bright yellow blotches on it- and once Morgan had them in their hands they felt like there was a possibility that these were... Eggs. They couldn't tell if they were viable or not, nor could they discern whether or not they were cooked. The human immediately blanches. What were they supposed to do with these? There were two of them- the other one was still set on the grass in a clump that might have hidden them a tad if not for both Morgan and Whisper being quite observant individuals. They barely had their feet in the gate, and they were already getting bombarded with... Eggs? [5] bx9LtUqc

Despite Morgan being completely convinced that these strange eggs, that they had not seen last year, were some kind of incredibly dangerous development in the mansion's ever winding yearly rotation- they couldn't really convince theirself to just leave the multi-colored things there in the clump of grass behind what they could now tell was a rustic-looking brick. They collected both the greenish and the purplish eggs, and they placed them in their backpack carefully- since they weren't sure about their contents or possible lack thereof. They then bent down to poke at the brick cautiously, and were not surprised when they found it to be made primarily of rubber. That seemed more like something that was what they'd expect of Tiken Tekai. Whisper seemed to have quieted down now that they had collected the eggs. It didn't take long for her to start shrieking again, which started as soon as they'd raised up from poking at the rubber brick. [6] MI9w9h89

The bespectacled human could not help but roll their eyes at Whisper's antics. This was going to be their next couple of hours now, provided that nothing else happens to cause them to go home any sooner than they had previously planned. "Whisper, can y-you chill out?" Morgan complains right back. They really couldn't help but be quite bothered by her annoying screeching. At least it wasn't a more powerful noise coming from a much larger creature- but who knew if this was going to continue as she grew up (and who knew how big she'd be when she grew up?). Perhaps she would not have been so quick to shriek for what she wanted if Morgan hadn't rewarded that behavior so commonly previously? Still, the human did cast their gaze around them as they tried to figure out exactly where the 'thing' was that was prompting Whisper to screech so loudly. [7] SSS8mb9G

At first Morgan couldn't find anything to belie what was causing the little fossil critter to freak out so much. They scanned at first the area about five feet in diameter around them on the ground, and then they scanned out a little further, and a little further, until they were finally sure that they wouldn't find it there. "What is it, W-whisper?" They asked the little creature rhetorically; fully aware that they were not going to get any answer that meant anything. For a moment, Whisper looks up at them with her brightly colored eyes looking quite innocent and very obviously not really understanding anything, and then she quickly looked pretty close to Morgan's foot again. Morgan follow the creature's gaze down next to the toe of their boot and they blanched. There was a little ring that stuck out of the ground- and Morgan could just see a little chain attached to it. The human knew that this development could not bode well! They were fully aware of what this thing was; they had a few of them on their own grounds that they still hadn't figured out how to open yet. A hatch door, built right beneath the loam. They hadn't noticed it before despite their rather observant nature because of how small the entire setup was. This made them squint a tad; they didn't particularly like the idea of pulling up the hatch at all let alone going underground... However as soon as they had noticed the little ring they'd heard a noise that was both very loud and quite decidedly not little Whisper's annoying shrieks. "Is that... Thunder?" They glanced up at what had just before being a bountiful clear blue sky with the whispiest of little white clouds- and now a great overcast swirling stormfront of dark grey and green angrily lit clouds was quickly approaching.
