By falling back into daily life, she also found herself falling back into the things that bored her. She felt a lack of purpose. She didn't have much of a career (or anything that drove her to spend her days 9-5,) and her small collection of pets were mostly self-sufficient, and what they did require was ultimately minimal. She enjoyed mining, but in many ways it was a coping strategy for her. She had hoped her travels would give her a direction and further purpose, but instead she felt as though time had just went by and things hadn't changed. Ultimately she would have to do the work internally. All of these things came from within, anything external wouldn't provide her what she was looking for. Perhaps it was something she had to discuss in therapy, but there was so much unpacking she tried to do when it came to her past (or lack of knowledge regarding it,) that she barely scraped the surface when it came to these other problems.
She hadn't realized they had spent the entire journey walking in silence, and finally when they got to the mines Charlie turned with a huff and looked at her. The morning was crisp, as it was in the winter months. She hadn't noticed the cold - it was one benefit to being a mammalian, and Charlie seemed most unaffected by it. But the cold could impact their mining efforts, and if the ground was frozen she would also struggle to dig anything up. "Well, what do you think?"

I'm not phased by the cold, but I do worry that its going to make mining a bit difficult. You've got all your tools, but there's no reason for us to play this on hard mode. If we get ourselves out of the elements at least we don't have to deal with the wind, and if we try to stay a bit more surface level we're probably going to find the ground a bit easier to work with.
The Vulticus stretched out near one of the many entrances. Amelia wasn't going to argue with his logic. Sure, she could dig away at frozen earth, but it would be easier to go somewhere a bit softer. The windchill just made things harder, and the further in the mines they got the colder and harder the ground would get. It wasn't shocking to the mammalian that there wasn't anybody else here. The early time of day compared with the cold weather didn't make for easy playing conditions. She adjusted her cart, ensuring the torch provided enough light further in. They probably wouldn't go anywhere too poorly lit, and if they stayed to well trafficked areas it was likely the earth would be warmer. More compact due to all the foot traffic and weathering, but also easier to dig into. Mining was a hobby for her before anything else, when she found gems they were just a bonus.
"Alright, you win, let's go this way." Her words echoed in the caves, and the canine tipped his head. He was an incredibly intelligent creature, could communicate with Amelia as needed through his thoughts, and also had an emotional connection that was incomparable. Despite this, he didn't understand her human words and instead went off the tone and feelings she conveyed. Alas, he stood up and began to walk in the same direction as Amelia.

Everything makes me tired.
The mammalian put the thought out, unsure if she would even get a response. After a bit of walking they had decided to stop and she twirled the shovel around in her arms. Pitching the shovel into the cold ground was work. But so was walking, so was even the most basic of tasks. It was unclear if Amelia was physically or mentally exhausted, or if everything came together as one. For the most part, she was healthy. She had gotten a few colds and had ate a few questionable foods, but usually she came to a full recovery. But this was a deeper exhaustion. She felt as though she was never well rested, and despite her best efforts her diet never seemed adequate. Perhaps it was time for her to throw herself into a new hobby. If she was capable of engulfing herself in a new passion, she figured the rest of her would follow. She had thrown herself into Sarane training once upon a time. The only issue was, despite her best efforts, others had more resources to throw into the same hobby. She had put a lot of time and work into Cristina and Denny, and she was proud of their strength and abilities. But, they were still taken down in battle by Sarane that were more capable of them. Others had gotten into the breeding before her, and were able to buy the same special injections, only earlier. She was always one step behind, and despite the hours and blood, sweat, and tears, others had beaten her to the championship. She had gotten unlucky sometimes, or others had just put in more work. Eventually, she didn't feel as though her efforts were paying off. Her Sarane were tired, and she let them live an easy life now. They had ample opportunity to mix together, to explore the area, to stretch their wings. They certainly weren't unhappy now that they weren't training and fighting, but she did feel as though she had lost the only small passion she had cultivated. The years had passed, and the mammalian forgot about that portion of her life. She forgot about the excitement the rink once brought her.
So now here she was, back in the mines. She was comfortable here, it was clear she had spent years here even before her memory allowed her to grasp. She pushed the shovel into a mound of dirt, feeling the crisp frost push against her. Charlie was stretched out near her cart watching her. Occasionally he would lend assistance of course, but he was mostly there fr the companionship
