Stamina: 7 Strength: 7 Resistance: 5 Dexterity: 4+2 Mentality: 2 Special Abilities: Fly, Jungle Dweller, Cold Resistance, Danger Sense, Hardy, Empathetic Link Moves: Climb, Gash, Bite, Poison Sting, Headbutt, Wall of Ice, Tail Strike, Pounce, Roar, Play Dead So... You don't think this is a little below our pay grade?
Trust Avander to come in with the sarcastic commentary. Aster glanced sidelong at him, and didn't dignify what he said with a reply.
Unsatisfied with being ignored, Avander persisted. Okay, let me rephrase that. You don't think this is a little below my pay grade?
"Since when did you have standards?" Aster drawled back.
Well, I didn't think I had to, until today, Avander said. But come on. Squashing bugs? Really? You're going to use me to do it?
If Aster was being perfectly honest, the truth was that it was kind of overkill to have Avander along for this. Summer might have done just as well. She wasn't nearly as powerful as a full grown drake, but what she could do in terms of roasting a creature would have done just as well for most bugs, even if they were on the big side.

But she had accompanied Aster into the mines last time, to find something from a Sarane nest, and Aster felt that he ought to establish some kind of... rotation with these. Swap out who accompanied him on each of these ventures, for variety's sake, if nothing else.
And it had been a while since he had taken Avander out for anything. "You need the exercise," Aster informed him. "You're going to get fat without it."
I'm a perfectly healthy weight, thanks for asking, Avander said.
Aster knew it too. They didn't always keep up with the intensive training that had characterized their early days, but Avander was never allowed to become really out of shape.
"Well, if you're too good for the job, then you better finish quickly," Aster said. "But try to leave the plants alone, and don't use your ice. I doubt we'll get a reward if we end up trashing the garden."

You really should have picked someone else for this, Avander grumbled. Nevertheless, he set to work in exterminating the caterpillars.
The job posting had described them as large, and given the proportions of the insects Aster had met since coming to the labs, he wasn't sure how big 'big' was going to be, exactly. He was glad to find that they weren't, say, the size of a Vespa, even a baby one. He didn't have a terrible phobia of bugs or anything like that, but seeing one as big as an adult Formica still made him a little uncomfortable.
They were more like... squirrel sized, some as big as his forearm. That was plenty big enough for Aster, though Avander, as it turned out, had a little trouble hitting them because of it. On the first try, anyway.
Ugh, Avander said as he managed to squash one beneath his claws. His nose wrinkled at the sensation of it.

"You're a pit champion. You're really going to let a bit of goo get to you?" Aster said, deliberately attempting to provoke him.
Avander shot him a withering look. If you think it's so easy, then you can do it, he retorted.
"What, and deprive you the chance of some target practice? No way. Looks like you need it too, with how you're doing." It was all in good fun, but there was a small kernel of truth to what Aster had said about this. He had expected Avander to be a little more... accurate, a little more precise. And maybe when he had been in peak condition, Avander would have been able to hit all the caterpillars here on his first attempt, rather than scrambling after some of them as they tried to flee his first swipe at them. They had certainly done enough rounds at the gym for it. But now... well...
