It was time for the show to begin. Fiera had spent hours beforehand sprucing Serine up as best she could- polishing off her gemstone, washing her until she was slick and shiny. (Which wasn't all that pleasant to the touch, but would look nice for the audience.) The final touch was a bright blue ribbon she had obtained the following winter, representing the blue sky and rain that came with summer to counteract Serine's firey appearance and personality. Hopefully the symbolism wouldn't be lost on the judges. As the humanish fiddled with it however, she saw movement out of the corner of her eye- they were being waved on stage, and Fiera was out of time. "Oh well... it looks fine." She said, framing Serine with her fingers as she backed up. Then, she flounced out onto the main stage, the bright blue sundress she was wearing billowing around her ankles. "Ladies and gentlemen, introducing- Serine!" She said, turning back to the curtain. "Serine, come!" She beckoned, and the tilvander slithered out, her skin and the ribbon shining in the spotlights.
(Serine uses come and shows off her decorative ribbon.)

"Behold, a creature perfectly suited to the summer months! Behold, her moist skin- far better for beating the heat than any ordinary sweat!" She said, wiping up a glob of slime off of Serine's back to emphasize the point. It was a little gross, but she saw the judges scribble something down- indicating that she must be doing something right. Fiera gave the audience a moment to ooh and ah over the amphibian, but her wet and warm appearance wasn't all that she had in mind. She had two pools laid out in front of her- one filled with water, and one filled with magma- or at least, a superheated substance that resembled it. Fiera didn't listen too much to the safety explanation that the contest hall had given her for why they couldn't bring in REAL magma, but the words "instant incineration" and "mass death" came to mind. She hadn't taught Serine any tricks that would allow her to navigate them, but Fiera had the feeling she didn't need them.

Fiera pulled a laser pointer from a pocket that was cleverly hidden on her dress. Clicking it on, she waved it in front of Serine, and the tilvander snapped to attention. She had noted that they were usually ambush predators for the most part, but Serine was still happy to chase after a pretty light from time to time. "Of course, Serine is WAY better suited to the heat than most- behold!" She said, and steadily moved the pointer towards the "lava" bath. She slithered after it eagerly, and eventually splashed down into the hot liquid without so much as blinking. The audience gasped in fear for a moment, but their confused murmuring turned to laughter as she popped her head back up moments later, no worse for wear. She wriggled around eagerly, enjoying the comforting warmth of the material that would cause severe burns on any other organisms. "Look at that ladies and gentlemen- she loves it!"

Serine quickly reached the far side of the pool from Fiera and clambered out, the droplets of glowing red liquid rolling and falling from her hide like deadly pearls, splashing with a loud hiss on the ground below. "But a beautiful creature such as this isn't suited JUST to lava, oh no-" Fiera said, and moved the pointer towards the other pool. Serina's tendrils raised as she spotted her "prey" again and galumphed towards the pool of water, diving into it. The water boiled with a loud hiss, throwing up a large cloud of steam. When it cleared however, the audience saw Serine sitting in the pool, perfectly safe. She threw herself around the shallows after the red point of light, just as comfortable below it as she was above. "Now Serine- swim!" Fiera said, giving the order as she pulled the light into deeper water. The tilvander bunched herself up at the edge of the shallows for a moment before pushing off, undulating through the water like an eel as she swam back toward Fiera.
(Serine demonstrates the abilities Amphibious and Swim.)

Finally she leapt from the water at the far side of the pool, splashing droplets of a far less lethal liquid onto the bottom of Fiera's dress. It was time for the grand finale. "Serine's perfectly comfortable in the summer months of course- perfectly adapted for both incredible heat and a lot of water. But she can help you out too!" She finally opened up the last item she had to the audience- a pretty blue umbrella. It was meant to resemble a flower, but Fiera was of the opinion that the "petals" looked a lot like water droplets as well, making it perfectly seasonal. "Now I don't particularly want to get wet, but normally this would help you cool off a great deal." She said with a wink, and held out the umbrella in front of her like a shield. "Serine- douse!" She said, giving the command. The tilvander looked around briefly for a source of water before returning to the pool, taking a mouthful of water into her mouth... and then without even moving back to Fiera, the tilvander turned her flexible neck around and shot it from her mouth, the stream blasting against Fiera's umbrella. It was difficult for the humanish to hold onto it as strong as it was, but it worked... for the most part. She hadn't really avoided getting wet so much as she prevented her body above the knees from getting wet. She waved at the audience as she closed the umbrella again, the hem of her skirt dripping. "I bet that would feel nice on a hot day!" She said. "Thank you so much for watching!" She continued, blowing a kiss as she beckoned Serine offstage. It wasn't her fanciest performance, but she knew that her theme was on point.
(Serine uses Douse, Fiera utilizes the umbrella.)

Emery watched as the fancy looking humanish flounced off stage. Her and Pyrrhos weren't nearly as... theatrical, but she was hoping a simple demonstration of her pet's abilities would be enough to at least qualify. She held the young elemental golem in one hand as she stepped out slowly. To his credit, Pyrrhos stayed put, happy to wait around wherever Emery left her. "Hello there." Emery said flatly, before holding out Pyrrhos. "Behold, a fire elemental golem. Arguably a creature as bright and hot as the sun in summer. And like the sun-" She said, lifting up a leaf in one hand. She held it over Pyrrhos's firey body, and the audience watched as it steamed, shriveled, and burnt up in her hands, the last shreds of it floating down to the ground, ringed in red. "It can be dangerous, despite its beauty." She said, and held the creature close to her chest again. "So be cautious, and always wear sunblock. Thank you." She said, giving a slight bow and walking off stage. Short, informational, and entertaining. That's what people wanted, right? (Emery uses the leaves and demonstrates Pyrrhos's Flame Body ability.)

Noa was feeling less ill than the last time he was here, but he still didn't plan on doing a very long routine. Truth be told, there wasn't much to show as far as Grunty was concerned -- not for the theme of the contest, anyway. He only had any fire-related abilities to speak of because of his injection, and lately Noa had more pressing things on his mind than how to be a proper showman when it came to the likes of these contests, unfortunately. They did show up for the show ring, however. Rhys helped set everything up, not that there was much to set up today. There was a fire pit that they had lying around at home, which was now heaped high with hay. In retrospect perhaps this had not been the smartest move. Grunty was eyeing the fodder with a covetous -- not to say ravenous -- gaze, and it would be some work to convince him to burn it rather than eat it. "If you listen well, you can have a little treat," said Noa, though there was more of a warning in his voice than one would expect when offering a bribe. Grunty pricked up his ears at the word 'treat'.

If he heard the threat in Noa's tone, he sure didn't look like it. But then, Grunty was always the dimmest of Noa's trained creatures, even though on paper he ought to be no more or less clever than Avander or Azalea.
Noa sighed. Well, the sooner they got this over with, the better.
He stepped into the ring, and at his command, Grunty followed after, coming to a neat stop on Noa's signal. It was a good thing he did know some basic obedience, since it would have been hard to control such an otherwise large and dolorous creature with any precision, even if he was easily bribed. "I'm Noa, and this is Grunty," Noa announced. He had used a bit of magic so his voice carried further, and there was a part of him that was pleased to see some audience members startling in their seats at the sound of it. "Some of you might have seen him before, though not in quite this capacity, I'll wager. Go on, show them," Noa prompted the Thundergug. Over the ribbon, he gave a less vague command: {Fire spout.}
Grunty complied, opening his mouth and belching forth a small gout of flame.

Grunty wasn't a particularly active or alert creature, so Noa had pre-positioned him in front of the fire pit stacked with hay. The sparks from his little spout of flame caught, and after a moment, the hay began to burn in earnest. Grunty came awake a little more, eyes widening in alarm. {It's burning!}
{It's supposed to burn. You can have food that isn't burnt after we're done,} Noa said. He reinforced this with a mental image of a more tantalizing meal than the one currently being reduced to ash in front of Grunty. The Thundergug mulled this over before settling back down.
{Okay. Promise,} he insisted.
{Promise,} Noa agreed. If he reneged on this, Grunty would likely never listen to him again anyway. {Now, this is going to string, but if you do this, you can have some extra bamboo. Step up and put your face through the fire.} Noa coaxed a slightly perplexed Grunty to shove his face into the fire, and then to breathe an even larger gout of flame forward. Noa couldn't see it from his angle, but he thought the effect must have been dramatic, to have Grunty wreathed by flame like that, like a beast out of hell.

Of course, the Thundergug was only resistant to the flames, and not immune from them, so before long Noa ordered him to back out into safety. {Hot,} Grunty complained.
{It's almost over,} Noa replied. Rhys would be able to heal him up after, and then it would be as if he had never been burnt at all. "See how the flames barely touched him," Noa said. "Truly a fit beast for the heat, wouldn't you say?" With that slightly bland closing statement, Noa took a bow, and then the two of them left the show ring, where Rhys was waiting. Noa didn't even have to ask; as soon as Grunty came within range, Rhys was administering healing magic.
{Better.} Grunty nosed wonderingly at himself, then shook off the remaining soot, satisfied. {Treat?}
"Yes, yes, treat," said Noa, materializing some food for Grunty, who didn't even bother waiting until they got home before asking for his reward. But then, Noa didn't really expect more than this from Grunty when it came to delaying gratification.
Once he was done, they could teleport home. Noa didn't want to think about what would happen if he tried to transport Grunty via magic while the 'Gug was mid-meal.

It was almost time for their turn in the spotlight for the Summer Solstice contest. Silver nervously brushed their clothes with their paws, as if that would actually help in any way. Vulc pushed his nose into the crook of their elbow and sighed softly. What were they so worried about? He wasn't sure but it made him a little worried, too.
"Oh it's okay," Silver said, rubbing behind his ears. "Nothing to worry about. We're just going to play, ah, play a game, then we can go home. Do you remember how we practiced?"
As it usually did, reassuring their companion made them feel a little better, too. Perhaps it was them that needed the pep talk that they gave after all. They quietly and as patiently as possible waited for their turn to take the stage. When it finally was time, they called Vulc and headed out onto the stage with as much confidence as they could possible muster.

Silver tried not to slouch or look too nervous as they took centre stage with Vulc. Vulc followed them closely, not because he was expertly trained to do so, but because he found their presence comforting and did not want to leave their side. Either way, the effect was the same, and to the audience, he probably looked like a well behaved Vulticus. He wasn't either of those things, of course, but Silver wasn't about to tell everyone as much.
"I am here," Silver said. Their heart pounded in their ears. 'Don't mess it up.'
"To... to introduce Vulcanus! Vulc here is a master of flames, and today he's going to show you his firey summer spirit!" Silver beamed at themselves, happy that they could squeeze that little pun in there, even if they were the only one who got the joke.
Vulc, hearing his name, slowly swished his tail a few times, throwing little embers off that fizzled as they hit the ground. He was getting a little more comfortable with this weird place as they spent more time there.

"Ah, alright, are you ready bud?" Silver asked, grabbing one of the props they had brought with them. It was a sparkler they found during the firefly festival in the mansion. They lit the end of it and held it out.
As he had been trained to do before they got here, Vulc grabbed the stick end of the sparkler in his teeth. His bright green eyes locked in to the fireplace that had been lit on the stage behind him. A curling flame danced around him as if it were excited about what was to happen next.
He got a running start, then leaped through the flames, splashing embers out of the campfire and spraying them every which way in a dramatic explosion of fire. He did not just jump over the flames as could be expected, but straight through them, coating himself in fire and sparks to prove that he could shake off the heat. While he wasn't totally fireproof, a little campfire was nothing to him.

Vulc landed on the other side of the stage and shook off any excess bits of fire that had grabbed on to him during the display. He swiveled around to look at Silver, as if to ask if he was doing a good job. Silver nodded and smiled, just like they did during training, to let him know that he was still on track.
Now it was time for the finale. It would be short but sweet, using one of Vulc's more interesting powers. The flaming spirit. He looked around until he saw the bright red lantern that had been hung up for him. Silver set down a figurine of a Tainted Equillion and pointed at it, indicating that it was the target.
Vulc dropped the sparkler and took a firm stance. He stared deeply into the flames of the lantern, and a flash of flame jumped off of his body, through the lantern, and onto the toy, catching it on fire. Unlike a simple fire breath, the flames almost didn't seem real. To the audience (and the judges), it looked very convincing that he pulled the flame straight from the lantern to set to toy alight, not giving any hints that the invisible flame was actually his fiery companion.
