Renathan stood there for a long time, feeling tremble-y and ill. He tried to force the image from his mind, but he really couldn't. They had lost; and that was it. It hurt him worse that he'd put Shy Guy into danger; it was just sick. He adored the beautiful huge creature, Shy Guy was his favorite honestly, and he just... Felt terrible. He couldn't understand what had been going through his mind, months ago, and now he was finally breaking down; in a dangerous place nonetheless! Renathan had to be here today, though. He had things to do. He had to get up, and get moving on; he needed to... Renathan felt something behind him; and turned slightly over his shoulder to look. It was Sarabi, she seemed worried, and was pushing her head into his shoulder, trying to let him know that she was there. Renathan gently petted her on the shoulder, trying not to treat her like a pet.

Renathan was used to his pets taking care of him whenever he was having a bad day, but boy, was this the bad day of all bad days. "Ugh, Sarabi, I know I'm not feeling too good, but I think that we need to go on, you know, and find some gems today." It was true, they needed to do other things, and really get a move on. They needed to find... At least 20 gemstones, after all. That was what they were here for! Renathan tried to grasp for strength, and then turned back around, deeper into the mining shaft. The smell of the salt kind of made his stomach turn, but he tried not to think about that as Sarabi moved toward the wall, gave it another lick, and then began tearing through it with her front limbs; that were excellently suited for the mines, not that it was a surprise at all.

Oh, look at the ore! And what a pretty blue gem.

While she was working, Sarabi bent down and picked up a chunk of salt in her mouth, chewing on it as she worked. Renathan worried about her a bit; that much salt couldn't be good for anyone, but then again she was a mining familiar and she was intelligent. She probably knew what risks to take and which ones weren't really even risks. Renathan still had that natural 'protective' instinct going on, however, so he was a bit surprised perhaps at it. If that was one of his other creatures, he'd have stopped them already. Ah, well, he couldn't control anything, not really. "You sure that is good for you, Sarabi?" He asked, sweetly. She waved him off and continued working at the wall and chewing on the salt. Ah, well. Maybe it was something that mining familiars needed every once in a while? For all he knew, it was their equivalent of chewing on ice.

There was only so much that could be done about the infernal salt-eating. He figured she just craved that mineral. The mammalian sighed, and leaned back against the opposite wall; there wasn't much he could do to help her over there. His back was rubbing against something very hard and a little sharp, as well as cold. Ah, aha, that was probably a good sign! "Is this..." Renathan turned around and looked it over quietly. It was... A metal! But what kind of metal was it? Renathan reached out to the mine cart and grabbed his light stick, now quite engrossed in this. He wasn't sure if this counted as a gemstone for the contest, but he was still really interested in metals. He needed them for his craft, after all! Metals of all kinds didn't really hurt, he wouldn't mind having a few more of any different kinds at home.

Renathan needed to get to work excising this metal from the wall on his side; but he still gave Sarabi a once over as he was reaching for the pick-axe. Renathan wasn't sure why she was digging in that salt deposit so much, but maybe it would be for something good? He tried not to over think it, technically Sarabi was her own individual, even if she lived in Renathan's farmland. She stayed of her own accord, and not because he was controlling her, after all. He wasn't sure if he would have wanted to control her even if he could, not really. He picked up the pickaxe quietly and turned back towards the metal that was jutting out of the wall on his side. It was time to get that metal out of the wall! Renathan made a quick game plan about just how to remove it from the wall, and then swung the pickaxe.

Renathan wondered how long they would be here today as he began removing the metal from the wall using the pickaxe. He struck at the wall one way, and then the other, daintily removing chips from the wall since he didn't know how large this metal vein was going to be. He was glad for the metal, of course, it was a great thing to have, and would make wonderful jewelry as long as there was indeed enough of it... As Renathan was swinging, he heard a great noise behind him, and stopped to turn around. The metal was half-removed, not quite ready to be completely removed yet as he did so. To his surprise, it did look like Sarabi had found something; a geode. He smiled beneath the mask and waved at her. "Isn't that a pretty one?" He wasn't normally big on geodes, but with the trader around, maybe he could find a good deal with it?

The geode was indeed a weird color though. He hadn't really seen one that color before, but he was sure it was mostly because he didn't really care for geodes all that much. But at least Sarabi had found something, those would probably count as gems for the dare, or at least he hoped so. Renathan turned back to what was doing before; trying to remove that pesky metal from the wall using the pickaxe. With Renathan and Sarabi working in the same area, they should be able to find a whole lot of stuff! Renathan couldn't be happier about it, really. They were quite the team when it came to mining. He still wasn't feeling too good today, but he was successfully trying not to think about it too much. Mining was really calming, and he didn't mind putting some elbow grease in to get what he needed out of today. He didn't mind waiting for good things to happen.

The ore was removed from the wall of the mine relatively quickly enough. He wondered how the mines were made originally, and why. Was the Labs built upon an old mining area? Was it because of the incredible density of minerals here (there were so much more than he had seen ever in his homeland!) or was it... Something else? Probably the magic, if it wasn't the minerals, the mammalian thought. Magic was super popular in this area, despite Pethia's general... Lack of it in comparison to his homeland. Were they really all that different? It did appear to be the case, despite Renathan trying not to think about this too much. Renathan sometimes missed home, though he never planned to go back. Honestly he really did not want to go back no matter what, but sometimes he missed having an easier time there. Living here was practically like camping out all the time.

Sarabi appeared to still be playing with the geode. Renathan chuckled at that; she was not usually easily distracted, but she seemed to be having a good time so far at least. "You enjoying that geode, Sarabi?" Renathan asked. He caught himself asking it and then turned back around to continue working on the metal in the wall. He wondered what sort of vein this was? He wasn't sure what to think about it; but he was glad that he found it! Sarabi really was a good luck charm out here in the mines, and he was very glad about that. Renathan was slowly beginning to relax a bit, falling into the rhythm of swinging the pickaxe at the wall to make sure that the metal would eventually be removed. Finally, after a lot of work, Renathan was able to remove the metal from the wall. He couldn't help but be proud; metals were quite hard to find it would seem.

There was only so much that could be done with a metal in the field; Renathan tried to remove as many of the carrier stone pieces as possible, knocking them off with a mallet at first, and then working on it with the finer tools in order to get it to where the metal would be relatively easy to work eventually. "Look Sarabi, I found some Metal." He said, holding it out for her to see. She looked up from the geode she was playing with and sniffed it, before making a good expression. Renathan was finally being able to tell when she was happy, at least, and that was a great thing. They would probably be even better at finding things together once they got really used to each other. Renathan put the metal in the minecart, and when he turned back around, Sarabi was digging into the wall again.

Renathan was secretly a little glad that Sarabi had began digging again. There was so much that needed to be found already, they weren't really close to done, especially since the metals might not count... Ah well. Sarabi was good at finding things, though, even better than he had ever been, and he was glad to be here with her, even if she was spending a lot of time eating salt and playing with geodes. It was out of character for her, and he hoped that she would be okay. It was always a big worry whenever a critter started suddenly acting very different as opposed to usual. Ah, Renathan needed to get back to it... He turned around, and waved the light stick around to see if there was anything interesting in the walls on his side of the mines over here, since Sarabi probably had the other side down pat enough.

Renathan shined the light on the wall and moved around, squinting a bit. Eventually, he was able to find a blue gem; he could see it plain as day, and boy was it quite big for a gem! However, it was stuck in the wall quite firmly, he tried to pull on it to see how stuck it was. That either meant that it was much bigger behind the wall, or it was part of a vein. That was very possible, and Renathan was curious to find out which one it was. He took the pick-axe to the wall masterfully, removing large hunks of carrier stone without any issue along with the wall around it, to make sure that it would be removed in practically no time! However, Renathan heard a noise, and had to turn back around again... Oh, Sarabi found yet another geode, and was now playing with both of them. Renathan shook his head.
