Zenjesi was in high spirits. There were a couple of reasons for this. The foremost one was that they were standing outside the gates to 'The Mansion', as they had heard it called. Not much information had circulated about it, but there had been enough for Zenjesi to come to the understanding that it was some sort of semi-dangerous magical hub. That was all it took to intrigue them. Now, standing before the gates, they read a similar warning regarding "waves of temporal displacement". They beamed. The second reason was lying at their feet. Or... standing. It was a little difficult to tell. Zenjesi's Bulldozer had been harnessed and leashed, outfitted with a new amulet of submission. The satyr suspected it was only this amulet and the fact that they had been the first thing the Bulldozer had seen upon hatching that they were able to stand within arm's reach of the creature. But here they were!

And it was all the better, they supposed, to have such a vicious and borderline feral creature with them on such an occasion. Perhaps it was just the talk of the townspeople, but if there were dangerous beasts to be found here, Zenjesi was certain that the Bulldozer would not take kindly to them. He did not take kindly to anyone! If they were potentially friendly beasts... well... that was what the amulet was for. Zenjesi's finger traced down the list, finally reaching the present month. Serpent's Dawn and the celebration of the harvest. They peered around the sign. It was evening, around the time most would be home eating their meals. This meant the mansion grounds were quiet. This was also for the best. The amulet worked well (Zenjesi had tested it before leaving the kennel) but it did rely on them having a faster reaction time than the Bulldozer.

The air was chilly, made occasionally cold by a small gust of wind that rustled dryly in the trees around. Zenjesi had wisely opted for a longer and thicker cape on this particular evening. Still, they felt a bit of a cool prickling on the back of their neck that they suspected had nothing at all to do with the season and everything to do with nerves. Though everything indicated this property was open to the public, they could not quite shake the strange feeling of inviting themselves in. They spared a glance down at the Bulldozer. He had not moved, or if he had, it was in an indistinguishable way. They pressed their lips together. This would be alright. Reaching out, they grasped the cold iron gate and swung it open. It squealed noisily. At least if they were not meant to be here, that would have alerted anyone to their presence.

But the large, towering mansion was still and quiet. It was not quite dark, however. A dim, flickering light was visible in the low light of evening - perhaps fire? The thought made Zenjesi shiver, realizing again how chilly the air had become. But their first task still lay before them: entering the grounds. Zenjesi took one step over the threshold. Nothing immediately magical happened. Alright, that was half the battle. Now... they turned to look down at the Bulldozer, who certainly had not moved this time. "Florian," they tried encouraging him. Nothing. They drew a long, slow breath, then tugged on the leash. He did not budge. Zenjesi suspected, despite their size difference, he was substantially stronger than they were. Well that was alright. They had to be smarter. They glanced around the scene. A small orchard occupied the front yard, framing the walkway to the front door. The satyr narrowed their eyes at Florian.

Trust him to move precisely when he needed to hold still. Zenjesi would need to be swift. They scanned the orchard one more time. No one around... now was the time. They dropped the leash, darted underneath an apple tree, and plucked a slightly overripe fruit out of the grass. They scurried back to the gate and... he had not moved. Zenjesi found themselves almost disappointed. "Florian," they hissed over to him, crouching and holding out the apple as an offering. It was not something he was likely keen to eat, but hopefully the gesture of food was a familiar enough one to entice him. He blinked, each pair of eyes doing so at a slightly different moment. Then he slowly pushed himself up (evidently he had been laying) and began to trundle towards Zenjesi. Smiling despite their nerves that he was about to run them down, they dropped the apple, scurried behind him, and slammed the gate shut. That was the second half, complete!

A light breeze rustles through the trees. What's that gleaming in the grass...?

Now, what to do? There was no one else in the orchard, the streets were quiet, the house was still... They had a moment to breathe. Zenjesi looked to Florian, who had reached the apple, discovered it was not to his palate, and settled back down into a crouch. The satyr could swear they almost heard a soft hiss emanating from him. That was a fair reaction to Zenjesi's deceit. That did not make them comfortable moving closer to him, however. That could wait a few moments; he did not seem the type to hold a grudge. But what did Zenjesi know? He was difficult to read. Though, the bribery with fruit had reminded the satyr that they had forgone their evening meal to come here at a quiet hour. It did look appealing. For the moment, they left the end of the leash lying in the grass and returned to the nearest tree to gather some fruit for themselves. Zenjesi: 0.3 Florian: 1.2 / 2.6

Zenjesi's eyes were trained on the ground, lest they step upon a fruit and anger the insects that were feeding there. They were picking their way when they instinctively glanced toward the place they had plucked the apple from the ground as... there was something there. Perfectly nestled in the grass in the place the apple had been was a small green orb. They froze, all senses on high alert. Oh this was interesting. Without moving their feet, they twisted their head around in all directions. Was there someone (or something) they had not detected lurking around? One would think there would have to be, but... Zenjesi was beginning to suspect this was the sort of thing others had been referencing when they described the mansion as magical. "Did you see anything, Florian?" they called back to the Bulldozer, turning back to the orb. "Something knows we are here."

Florian did not respond. However, as Zenjesi was beginning to stoop to take a closer look at this orb, he did seem interested, beginning to pull himself in that direction as well. The sudden movement made the satyr start slightly. It was easy to forget he was capable of such things. Sometimes he became little more than a feature of the landscape. Zenjesi was determined to one day break through that unreadable exterior, but today was not that day. In fact, he was moving quite quickly now, directly towards the orb and the satyr. They braced themselves, preparing to engage the amulet if the situation called for it. Still, they had to give him the benefit of the doubt sometimes. His jaws opened, head began to turn -- "Florian, no!" they commanded, and the amulet lit up a moment before his teeth snapped down on the orb. They let out a slow breath.

Yes, the command word was a bit simple, but with how often Zenjesi found it needing to be uttered, they thought it was best. In addition, perhaps the repeated usage of the word would actually begin to train him. That was why they were here together today. Zenjesi feared that if they did not spend a good amount of time with the Bulldozer while he was smaller than they were and impressionable, they would lose control of him altogether. Meanwhile, Florian withdrew from the orb, slowly closing his jaws and once again blinking all six of his eyes at Zenjesi. This time, they distinctly heard the hiss. The amulet means he cannot hurt you. Still, it was a bit of an act as Zenjesi nonchalantly reached out and plucked the orb from the grass in front of his face. "I understand you are upset," they began, "but you do not respect magic."

With a momentary reprieve, Zenjesi turned their attention back to the orb. They realized they had perhaps touched it impulsively but at the same time, how else were they to determine if it had any properties? It did not seem as if anything had happened... and then their eyes turned up, and landed on a well they had not been able to see from their prior vantage point. Was that coincidence? Mayhaps, mayhaps not. Either way, it would have to wait. The orb itself was actually quite pretty, not to mention thematically appropriate considering their company. Speaking of whom... a bee or two had landed upon Florian's back. At least Zenjesi could be confident that they would not be able to pierce his thick hide. They placed the orb gently in their bag and reached up, finding a perfectly red-orange apple still on the branch and plucking it easily. "Who else is hiding in the grass?" they mused to themselves, beginning to slowly pace the area whilst snacking.

As they paced, they made certain not to wander too far from their companion. They were not sure he would be able to get into much trouble on his own, not in a location like this. However if someone else were to arrive, either another stranger wandering in from the outside, or one of the occupants of the house, they had no doubt he would quickly get himself (and Zenjesi, and the stranger) into trouble. Aggressive and tenacious trouble. But it was alright! That was precisely why they were here: to prevent that. Zenjesi paused in their searching for a moment, considering the slight paradox they had created. Well it was irrelevant anyway, since no one else was here, and since Zenjesi was diligently watching -- They walked into a low-hanging branch, and their horn snagged as they tried to pull away, sending the branch whipping back. Fruit and dead leaves tumbled to the ground.

Hmm. Diligently watching, indeed. Zenjesi paused to watch as the branch slowly stopped swaying. Florian, too, had actually reacted to this, his head swiveling slightly more to the side to better view the scene. And then something else caught the satyr's eye. Zenjesi noticed that one of the apples on the ground was... rocking slightly? That was odd. But everything here seemed a bit odd, so perhaps in sense it could actually be considered normal. That did not mean they should throw caution to the wind. They took a few careful steps closer, leaning to peek over the fruit and... A horse? Zenjesi crouched down, leaning forward on their fingertips. A tiny, straw horse was nibbling at the freshly fallen apple. They blinked. Well. The Labs had created life in dozens of other unbelievable forms. Why not this one? The little thing was the size of the apple, but it hardly seemed discouraged.
