Juniper's screech rose above the laugher, cutting the woman off in favor of clapping her hands over her ears. "Okay, okay! Good screech!" the satyr complied, grabbing an entire fistful of treats to throw June's way hastily as she could. Gods, okay - bad idea to laugh at this hen. It was the most effective 'response' to it she'd gotten in a very long while, Lethalia would give her that. Lethalia sighed, looking at Juniper while she looked back, and asked "Y'not comin' in, are 'ya?" That unhappy little glower told her no, the hen was not going to bypass this cold barrier. Even though the hen literally had a built in resistance thanks to her sire's cold blood, but. Oh well. This was one fight she wasn't going to manage to win with this hen. Instead they could spend time better 'practicing' screeching down the hallway where the echo made for a better competition to keep screaming against. (Perfect - just not for her ears.) Juniper had been doing decent with her first dips into the pit; to see the stunted young adult make it so far was heartening. Even with several missed hits already under their belts. Though the sands continued to toughen her up, once outside of the pit, she was still the sensitive needy thing Leth had grown used to having around. Scales around her muzzle and neck were still stained a light pink from the lifeblood that wouldn't wash away so easily, as if a reminder of what the white was capable of. Still, they'd earned a better outing than long hours in the stinking pits. Perhaps she was still being overprotective of the hen - surely she'd have been capable of going longer. Better for her owner's mental health this way, going to the mansion to relax and go find new things, like - More tidepools. Lethalia had wanted to let Juniper experience more water features than what she'd already seen - not more of the same as last month! Juniper lv|42.1 ly|42.1 August|1

At second look, the scenery had changed, but it might have taken some squinting to see the differences. Salt still lingered in the air, tidepools dotted the landscape as far as they eye could see. The sand gave way underfoot and carved tiny dunes and valleys with each step, fine white glittering grains as if the beach deigned itself snow. Tiny shocks of color littered the beach, fragments of shells and bits of glittering confetti over stark sands. Dark volcanic rocks rose up against the pale of the sand with their disruptive organic shapes, marring the smooth eddies of the wind carving the beach to dunes. A far cry from the humanoid debris littering the last beach, as if they'd come upon it the morning after a pretty intense beach party. (Luckily, the mansion neglected to create all of the broken bottles normally present at such a site.) August|2

It was different enough - and sure enough these tide pools found Juniper eagerly seeking out playthings beneath their mirror's surface. Some things would never change. Like her dam she remained petite even in adulthood, but put on more of that lean muscle than the red ever had. Leth had to admit a growing fondness for this odd, cattish hen. An extended amount of time spent with anything at all would see Lethalia getting attached - she could probably anchor one of her heartstrings to a boulder if she spent enough time around it. Naturally, the hen rushed to the first puddle she could find with the recollection of all the 'toys' she'd found in one last time. They'd left tiny Utu home this time in hopes for a bit calmer of a time - but you never knew with this hen. If she could start shit with a cliff jumper so tiny it cold fit in a pocket, she could find trouble with just about anything. Leth was grateful for the lack of coming across any larger living creatures in the mansion. August|3

Juniper would be kept 'busy' with the tidepools for some time, and she was matured enough that Lethalia didn't have any hangups over leaving the hen to her own devices. (Well, saying no hangups about it was overstating things. She was working on it, okay?) That'd been the goal of all the effort piled into the hen - gaining her independance like any other normal sarane. Now she had a hen who was full-grown for real and not just on the mansion's whim, it should have come as quite a relief! Leth told herself she ought to be celebrating the progress and definitely not be pining for the clingy, confused adolescent she'd been dealing with the last few months. There were many more toothed clingy hatchlings to get her 'baby fix' on; no reason to mourn the inevitable of one growing up when there would be another right after. June didn't need breaking, and that was win enough. August|4

Sand cascaded up and away in a miniature wave when Lethalia skimmed her hoof through it, 'kicking dirt' and getting lost in her own thoughts as she meandered away from the pool June had decided to lord over. Winding a hoof back to launch a rock far as she could, Leth kicked her heel back for the next rock just before squinting at it with deeper scrutiny. Putting her hoof down, she knelt to brush the sand away from the smooth rock which revealed itself to be not a rock at all. One of those pretty almost horn shaped shells, it's spiral almost lost to the beach. She just got to thinking it might be a pretty home for some little critter when the shell unexpectedly twitched, the mere movement seeing Lethalia's hands flying away to clasp together at her chest. She definitely did not make any kind of squeak about it, either. Juniper lv|43 ly|43 August|5

That sandy-beige shell lended the little crab quite a lot of camouflage, utterly hidden until it's dayglow orange claws popped out from beneath it's mobile home. So quiet and peaceful on the beach, the woman could've sworn she could hear the granules of sand cascading off the hermit crab's home as it raised itself up on stilted fuzzy legs. So much for the peace. Even with lengths of tide pools between them, that tiniest movement encapsulated Juniper's attention. Nothing of interest dwelled in the pool she'd been crouching over and she abandoned it without a thought, springing to her feet to meet the small moving object. It was one of those things she held onto from being a hatchling - small scurrying things would no longer make up a meal. June was getting bigger and more confident, while retaining such a play/prey drive any little movement could still send her rocketing off after it. August|6

Right on queue, there came June thundering towards the hint of movement. The crab looked blissfully unwawares until the ground began to shake, and it's eye stalks twitched from one side to the other before it caught the white mass coming right for it. Lethalia imagined it would've made an exclamation if it could've, desperately scuttling away. Juniper sprayed sand as she sailed through the air and pounced nearby; the hermit relinquished the idea of escape to instead snap back up into it's shell. Had it been a puppy, or any other younger softer being, Lethalia probably would've deterred them from charging a crab. June? She had gotten big and more-or-less matured enough that it was about time she could manage her own 'lessons'. Adult enough Lethalia's protective instinct for younglings had worn away with the white; a likely sign June could hold her own. If she couldn't, it was time to learn. August|7

Still. The woman couldn't help but cringe as Juniper stuck her face into the now-stationary shell, wondering were the little moving parts she'd seen had dissappeared to. Nosed and rolled over, the shell revealed the bright of the crab making itself flat as it could tucked inside of it's home. Luckily for it, this hen hadn't encountered a lot of creatures that had their own defenses, and still stared at the shell with a bewildered tilt to her ears. But it had just been here, and moving! She'd seen it!! June almost looked distraught as her claws ripped through the sand nearby and found nothing in the wakes she'd created. Her big paws came down on the sand, patting and splaying her claws over the disturbed dune in a catlike display of making sure she hadn't seen the barest twitch beneath the ground. She'd gotten pretty keen on catching tiny things; one having slipped between her claws appeared devastating. August|8

"Got'im covered, June-bug?" Leth ventured with a chuckle, "Jus' dissappeared righ' under ya'nose, huh?" Words had little effect on Juniper's near-frantic searching, having progressed to laying flat on her belly to rake her claws through the sands. Bit hard to believe this little shit had just been biting chunks out of drakes just like it was nothing at all, and here she was near wailing at the loss of her newest toy. Taking mercy on the small creature, Lethalia slowly scooted the shell away from the sandstorm Juniper was trying her best to singlehandedly brew. The hen hardly even noticed, absorbed as she was in her own search she somehow bypassed the shell completely. Snatching the occupied shell up from behind her hoof, Lethalia hurriedly chucked it far away from Juniper's vicious search. Life with these brutes meant fatalities of the tiny critter kind had become commonplace, but the woman would still save what she could from their greedy maws. August|9

Juniper looked up oddly, quirking an ear at where she thought she heard something land. It was quickly forgotten when the satyr stuck a hoof in the sand she'd been raking through, June falling to the ground again and claws reaching for whatever her owner had found. "Doofus," Leth remarked, voice glowing with fondness. Compared to something that moved on it's own accord, the sand dollar beneath the woman's hoof was lackluster to say the least. "Wanna' try'n go in wit'me, this time?" she asked, wondering if there was a time limit on how long this would maintain the hen's attention. So far, it was looking like she could stay in that patch of sand for quite some time. It vaguely resembled a zen garden, wavy lines raked in organic patterns all around the hen. Leth thought she should have one of those fancy tablet-things that took pictures, just to prove her hen was a modern art progidy. Juniper lv|44 ly|44 August|10

Too newly devastated by the loss of her toy, Juniper set her chin on the sand and moped, claws raking a new channel across the sands. "Pretty sad, girlie," Lethalia commentated, patting the hen's barrel as she walked past. "'m still goin' though, if ya' wan'ta do somethin' else." It looked like June wasn't quite finished throwing her minor fit, even after her owner walked away. Leth could feel the hen's eyes on her as she left and wondered how long it would take the white to follow along. With those blues on her though, when she caught sight of it off in the distance Leth had to ensure she didn't watch the little orange crab scuttling away fast as it's many legs could carry it. Best not tip June off where it'd ended up - best result for the crab, anyway. "Bye, June!" Leth threw over her shoulder with a bright laugh. August|11

With the coming of Ebbedian, the mansion hardly resembled itself. Someone looking for the usual grand estate for the first time would have been either severely dissappointed in being misled, or bypass this beach house entirely. It did look quite out of place, here in the center of a city - in the center of the landmass, no less. Lethalia couldn't help but run her fingers over the strange bark of a palm tree swaying before the house. They were an uncomonality around here, not nearly hot or damp enough for them. This 'bark' that looked halfway like brittle scales and half like it was thatched by hand was too different to resist reaching out to inspect. The woman had figured she'd have some time to poke around before Juniper got bored enough to come seek her out, but there came the soft noises of sand spraying that was hard to hear until she was getting pelted by it. "Y'made it, Juni!" Lethalia commended, even amdist getting sprayed with sand. There was almost nothing that could drive Leth away from the outdoors, especially a pleasant late summer day like this. What she was discovering was that there actually were things in nature she didn't care for. She'd always known water wasn't among her favorite things, but Pethia wasn't rife with lakes or rivers so it wasn't often on her mind. Now that she'd gotten this water-hen and visited the mansion in both it's beachy summery forms and seen more bodies of water than she ever had in her life, Lethalia felt that she could confidently say she hated the sand. Thank gods the lake on her farm was properly rocky. "Les' get outta' th'sand," Leth suggested, sighing inwardly at the hen and letting it slide. June wouldn't have understand being admonished for flinging sand anyway, it wasn't worth the fuss. August|13
