The sarane reeled backwards, growling slightly in surprise. She wasn’t used to the little things of the world around her fighting BACK! The sarane was used to things just getting out of her way or being able to walk right through them. This was certainly a change, and Fiera leapt on the opportunity to praise her for that beginner’s growl. “Good job, Drips! Good intimidate!” The humanish said sweetly, and popped open the cooler before grabbing a couple chunks of meat. She tossed them to the sarane, who immediately perked up and snatched them out of the air. Now she was interested, knowing that Fiera would be rewarding her for doing… what was it that she had done? React to this little purple whatsit? That was something she could do again, especially with how loud it was being, keeping her from taking a nice nap. How dare it do that to her!

Fiera saw Drips coming back to investigate the gemmorn again, so she quickly barked out the command. “Drips, intimidate!” She said, and another growl rumbled from the sarane’s throat, louder than before. She even bared a bit of fang this time, to Fiera’s delight. While her performance was much better this time, the gemmorn didn’t seem impressed by it, hissing and snapping at the cage bars. Drips seemed confused at that, and looked at Fiera for support. “Good job, Drips!” Fiera said, happy that she was at least making progress, even if it hadn’t paid off yet. She opened the cooler and threw Drips a couple more chunks than before, to reward the increased amount of desired behavior. The hen was thrilled to pieces and quickly snapped them all up with an uncharacteristic speed. Fiera snorted with amusement and stood back, waiting for her to finish so they could try again.

When the last chunk was down her throat and gone, Fiera nudged the cage closer to the sarane, sending the pocketpet inside into a furious flurry of hissing and spitting. Frankly she was amazed at how much energy the little beast seemed to have. Drips waited for Fiera’s cue this time as she was admittedly starting to get used to this critter’s shenanigans. “Okay Drips, intimidate!” Fiera said. This time Drips’ response was a lot stronger. She moved forward a bit, her lips curling upward as she let out a deep snarl from her throat, lowering her head dangerously and staring right at the gemmorn. Fiera had to admit she was impressed, and even the pocketpet gave pause… for a moment. After a split second it just screeched in her face again, and Drips backed off. Still, it was a much bigger success than before for the sarane.

“Good job Drips, good intimidate!” Fiera said as the sarane put a bit more space between her and the cage, trotting over to Fiera for her treats. “Okay, hold your horses.” Fiera said affectionately as she shoved the sarane’s snout away from her, trying to keep her from shoving her whole head under her arm. Fiera continued pushing at the dragon as she opened the cooler, making sure she couldn’t fit her face in there as she got out the food. Once she had it, the humanish tossed the meat in the general direction of the gemmorn’s cage, causing Drips to run off so she could re-secure the lid in peace. By the time she was done and had stood up again however, Drips had finished and was waiting patiently for her next order. “Okay Drips… intimidate!” Fiera said over the gemmorn’s grumbles, pointing at its cage once more. Drips turned to look at it and began again with her routine.

The growl welled up from the base of her throat again, but this time it was long, low, and completely menacing. Her pupils contracted to slits, she held her wings out as wide as she could and flexed her claws along the ground. Her lips flew up to reveal her row of razorlike teeth, and tried as best she could to stare into the gemmorns sould. It paused… and walked quite politely into the cardboard house Fiera had made for it. Perhaps it wouldn’t ADMIT it had been bested, but the results were clear. Fiera was impressed… until Drips immediately shot up to look at her, galumphing toward the humanish for treats as if she were a puppy. She laughed as the sarane nudged her snout insistently against Fiera’s hands, and gave her a relenting scratch behind the ears.Drips had been fun to train, but now she knew everything she needed to know- it was time to let her go.

Fiera was back in the public park for a brief training session with Orpheus, her crested alurook. He was starting to look more like a ‘real’ alurook now, with a couple of flight feathers growing in along his wings and the signature crest starting to plume out from his head. Still, he was far smaller than a normal alurook, and still only barely came up to Fiera’s hips. She wouldn’t be riding him through the sky for a long while yet, that was for sure. Still, that was a good thing for now. It gave Fiera more time to teach him obedience tricks and get him to behave better. The bigger he got, the harder it would be for her to teach that. He could just muscle right through her and she would never be able to tell him no- or force him to back off. For now, he was still just small enough that she could manhandle him if need be. One of the things that he was still pretty darn bad about was biting her. Orpheus was a grumpy, persnickety little beast and it always seemed like his number one method of solving problems was to bite Fiera as hard as he could. And he could bite pretty hard too. Alurooks’ sharp beaks were perfectly designed for carving through flesh after all, and Orpheus was no different- especially now that Fiera had taught him to use his beak in a fight. So the first focus for today would be getting Orpheus to back off if he started getting nippy. For that purpose, Fiera had a falconer’s glove with her today. It was normally for more traditional falconry and not for a bird the size of a houluh, but it was still designed to resist the sharp cuts of bird beaks and claws. At the very least, it would keep Fiera from getting her hand shredded.

With that in mind, Fiera popped open the cooler she had brought with her. It was stuffed to the brim with meat, and Fiera had no doubt that Orpheus would go for it the second she pulled it out regardless of whether her fingers were in the way or not. “You ready, Orpheus?” She said, palming a chunk of meat. The alurook screeched at her expectantly and she held up one of the half frozen chunks so he could see it, clutched in her glove. He shrieked excitedly and lunged toward it, clearly unable to wait or give any sort of care to if he was going to hurt her. Sure enough, he ended up biting down hard on one of Fiera’s fingers and even through the tough glove she could feel the painful pressure and sharp edge of Orpheus’s beak. “Orpheus, no bites!” She said sharply, pulling her hand up.

He hissed with annoyance and jumped up, flapping his wings madly, but still didn’t have enough lift to actually get to Fiera’s fist, now held well over her head. “Orpheus. No. Bites.” She repeated, waiting for him to get tired. Soon enough he backed off, still hissing quietly and looking at Fiera with contempt. “Yeah I know, I suck.” Fiera said, rolling her eyes, but brought her hand back down again. “No bites.” She repeated and Orpheus, to his credit, seemed to approach slower and more carefully now that he knew that Fiera would take the treat away for misbehavior. Then his head flew out and he snapped at the meat again, getting a small piece of it but still scraping his beak against Fiera’s hand. “Orpheus! No bites!” She scolded again, bringing her hand back up. The alurook chick grumbled loudly and made a few half-hearted jumps, but seemed to understand what that meant by now.

When he had finally calmed down, Fiera brought her hand back down. “Okay, you can have it. Be gentle though, ok?” She said calmly, offering the meat to him again. The alurook tilted his head at her hand and leaned out again with his beak open. To her delight though, he did it with even more care and grace than last time. Unlike his first haphazard strikee and his second calculated but still violent attempt, he gently teased the meat out of her hand, keeping an eye on the humanish to make sure she wasn’t about to jerk away. Finally he was able to pop the meat out of her hand. “Good job, Orpheus!” Fiera praised, though she knew that finally getting the treat was the true reward for him here. Hopefully now he would be more careful when Fiera snapped “no bites” at him and she could trust him to look before he bit.

With no bites out of the way, it was time for Orpheus’s next trick. He had taken to performing one act of good manners well- now it was time to see if he would stay good for more things. Tolerance was a pretty common thing for Fiera to teach her pets. It was useful for medical visits, allowing her otherwise cantankerous creatures to get used to being touched and examined by professionals. But for Fiera, the biggest use was in future tricks. She needed Orpheus to be okay with her touching him and arranging his body in ways that were satisfactory to her for certain tricks. If she needed him to kick, he’d need to be ok with her touching his foot. To put on riding equipment, he’d have to be accepting of the humanish touching his back. So on and so forth. With that in mind, Fiera was ready to begin.

She started him out easy with parts of his body that he was already at least a little bit okay with her touching. She gently stroked the top of his head and his back before moving on to ruffling the feathers, pressing them back so she could look at the skin underneath. She did that until Orpheus began to give signs that she was upsetting him, hissing slightly and glancing over his shoulder. When that happened, she quickly gave him a treat. “Good tolerance, Orpheus!” She said calmly and gently, rewarding him for putting up with it. She kept searching through his feathers like that for a while, looking for any injuries or bugs until he seemed to grow used to it, even if he wasn’t exactly happy with it. Fiera smiled and stepped back a bit- that was a good first effort. Now she had to up the ante a bit.

From there she slowly peeled Orpheus’ wings away from his body, looking at the structure a lot more closely. The alurook chick definitely didn’t like Fiera doing that, and quickly yanked it away while hissing. “Come on Orpheus, it’s okay.” The humanish replied, offering him another chunk of meat for his troubles, holding it in her fist. He inched forward before trying to wrestle it out of her fist, taking off bits and pieces of it. While he was suitably distracted, Fiera reached out to grab his wings again. “That’s it Orpheus, good boy.” She praised softly as she pulled them open and shut them again. He resisted at first, but the more he realized that she wasn’t going to hurt him, the more okay with it he got. It even got to the point where he would relax and leave the wing in whatever position she left it.

After that, Fiera moved on to the alurook’s claws. His talons were long and sharp, perfectly adapted to snatching at and clawing prey. Or slashing Fiera’s face off. Thankfully, she was still wearing the falconer’s gloves from the last trick she taught him, and as long as she leaned away she figured she would be ok. With one hand she kept Orpheus consistently fed, and with the other she gently lifted up one foot, checking the claws and playing with his toes before setting it back down. He was upset at first, but with the help of the treats she was giving him, Fiera managed to get him to let her hold his foot up for longer and longer amounts of time. Just like the rest of his body, Fiera managed to slowly convince him to let her pose his legs as she pleased, setting them back down in positions he would have otherwise found quite awkward.

For the grand finale however, Fiera moved toward his face. Fiera knew that Alurooks had highly sensitive eyes and ears, and those round, wide eyes were likely easily damaged. Just as she suspected, he hated it the second she came near his face with her fingers, hissing and recoiling. Fiera immediately offered another piece of meat to calm him down. He begrudgingly began to gnaw it out of her hand, and Fiera started him off easy. She stroked around the edges of his head instead of immediately going near his face and worked her way in. She ruffled the feathers around his chin and kept feeding him more treats as she traced her fingers around his beak. Finally, she was able to round the rims of his eyes without a reaction much more than a blink. She sighed with relief- being allowed to touch him made things so much more manageable.
