Fiera had come to the training grounds of the public park one more time with Drips, a marked brown sarane hen she had been hired to train. She still had a couple of tricks she wanted to train, but would probably spend some time taking a short break after this. Drips had been working pretty hard lately after all, despite her inherently lazy nature. Fiera didn’t exactly what to push her luck with the hen, so she was going to finish up this move and call it a day. Drips would probably appreciate getting to sit back and relax for a bit and not have Fiera breathing down her neck for a while- and she had a lot of neck to breathe down. Fiera stretched and went over her list, waffling between the two items left on it. She might as well go for rend now to finish off the fighting moves first.

Intimidation was on the list as well, but Fiera had to admit that that would be a hard needle for the sarane to thread. She was very unmotivated after all, and would much rather sit there and sleep than try and scare her opponents. It would take quite a bit more time to teach her than the fighting moves, so Fiera would leave it for the time being. Rend on the other hand was quite a deal easier to teach than intimidation. In fact, all she needed for it was another branch for the sarane to tear apart. With that in mind, Fiera wandered off to find one. With most pets- especially ones she didn’t actually own- she would feel nervous about leaving them on their own, knowing that they might not be there when she came back. This was due to them either wandering off… or getting stolen.

That wasn’t something she had to worry about with Drips, however. The hen was too lazy to get up and get lost, and far too large (not to mention fearsome when she really, REALLY wanted to be) for someone to just up and take her. She would be fine for a couple minutes. Finally, Fiera managed to find a significantly sized branch with a thick layer of bark on it. Perfect. All she had to do was get Drips to drag her claws across it and try to slice it in two with her own strength. As far as fighting moves generally went, this was one of the easier ones to teach. Fiera was actually quite pleased with herself for leaving it for last, knowing that it would make the rest of the day go a lot quicker. She dragged the branch back to the clearing they were in, with Drips only barely noticing her return.

“Okay, Drips! Let’s get started!” She said cheerily, only for the hen to roll over in her “sleep” in response. Fiera knew that she was really awake though, as she saw the sarane’s ear flick in response to her speech. Fiera sighed and popped open the cooler she kept frozen chunks of meat in, and the sarane immediately perked up, suddenly and surprisingly awake. “That’s more like it.” Fiera said with a chuckle and tossed the meat back in the cooler for the time being. Drips seemed a little chagrined at not actually being given food, but not enough to pull away from Fiera as she approached with the branch. The humanish crouched down and grabbed one foot gently before dragging it across the branch. “Rend, Drips.” Fiera said firmly, repeating the action as she repeated the word verbally. Drips looked at her, clearly a bit confused about all this.

After Fiera repeated that a couple times though, she got the treat back out. She held up the meat chunk where Drips could see it before tossing it to her. “Good job, Drips! Good rend!” She said as the meat flew in an arc overhead and was caught by Drips in an uncharacteristic act of agility. Fiera chuckled- if there was one thing that could get this sarane to move her butt, it was food. “Okay, let’s try that again.” Fiera said, rubbing her hands together before holding out the branch again. “Drips, rend!” She said, gesturing at it. For a few moments, Drips did nothing before sniffing at the branch experimentally. Fiera was about to grab her foot again when the hen finally reached out her front claw and weakly slapped at the branch a couple times before looking to Fiera for approval… and also for food. Mostly for food.

Fiera smirked and tossed her another chunk. That was the weakest attempt at a scratch that she had ever seen but at least she had done it on her own instead of reling on Fiera to move her foot for her. The treat was gone in an instant, leaving the pair of them ready to try again. If only Fiera could get Drips to attack with that sort of speed! Still, even if she couldn’t get that sort of speed, she could still get that sort of force. “Okay Drips, rend!” Fiera said, thrusting the branch out at the sarane suddenly in an attempt to startle her into attacking. It worked a little bit as Drips recoiled backward for a second while hissing before slashing her claws out like a surprised cat. It worked better than Fiera thought as she managed to slash a good deal of the bark right off of the branch.

It clattered to the forest floor beneath them and Fiera pulled the branch back, impressed. “Good rend, Drips!” She said happily, and sorted through the cooler for a second. Finally she pulled out another chunk of meat, one even larger than before. Extra effort meant extra food, and Drips was delighted to get a bigger treat than usual (though she seemed to eat it in half the time. Fiera was amazed she never choked.) When Fiera picked up the branch again, Drips seemed almost excited. Perhaps not excited for the wonders of education and learning or the thrill of the fight, but Fiera would still take it if she was just in it for the food. With that in mind, the humanish pushed out the branch again, rotating it a bit so an unscathed spot was facing the sarane hen. “Okay Drips, rend!” She said, giving the order to attack.

Drips bunched herself up, tense and excited before throwing her claws out again, gouging an even deeper chunk out of the wood that Fiera was holding. The humanish flipped it over to check. Her claws had managed to dig nearly an inch deep, which was quite impressive to her considering how inexperienced Drips was. The wood was a little old, sure, but even Fiera’s best camp knives rarely got that deep. Drips would be expected to do even more damage in a fight though, so Fiera would have to keep chugging away at it. Still, Drips had earned herself anotehr juicy treat. Fiera threw her not one but two chunks of meat this time, which Drips scrambled around to claim before sitting in her original spot. She had practically vacuumed them up and was now quivering with anticipation of the next blow.

Fiera barely had to give the command before Drips struck again, only getting out the last “d” of rend as talon struck bark. The force of the blow nearly ripped the branch out of Fiera’s hands this time, causing the humanish to stumble forward and yelp. Drips looked particularly pleased with herself as she had managed to chop at least a quarter of the way through the wood after Fiera inspected it. “Excellent job, Drips!” Fiera said, and the sarane followed her eagerly as she opened her cooler of meat, tossing out a few chunks for the hen to chew on. “Good rend!” She said, following the treats up with an affectionate rub behind the ear. Fiera had the feeling she was just about done with this trick as she was able to put significant force into her blows now, but she figured it couldn’t hurt to give it one more good old try.

“Okay, Drips.” Fiera said, holding up the now battered branch. She struggled to rotate it to a spot that Drips hadn’t clawed open yet. She had the feeling it would break completely this time around, if just from the force of the blow cracking it open along the existing stress fractures. “Rend!” Fiera said excitedly, eager to see how it would go down. Drips was quick as a flash, slashing her claws outward, and before Fiera could even blink, the branch was in pieces. However, upon investigation she found that it wasn’t broken along the lines of the other slashes. Instead Drips had cut so deeply and pressed so hard that she had managed to break through the branch in a single strike. Fiera chuckled and threw the remains of the stick back into the woods before turning back to the cooler of treats. Yeah… that’d do it.

Fiera was back in the saddle with regards to training, at least for the time being. She was in a clearing with Drips, a marked brown sarane hen that she had been hired to train. The hen lazily sniffed the air but almost immediately curled up to take a nap, and Fiera knew that she would have her work cut out for her today. Drips’ laziness made it awfully difficult to train her sometimes, but Fiera knew that she could usually be enticed to obey with the promise of treats. Still, this training session was going to be a little bittersweet for Fiera. She had done several training sessions with the hen already, and today they were on the last ability that Drips had to learn before Fiera would return her to her original owner. She was a sweet sarane (a relief in comparison to Fiera’s more fearsome beasts.), but she did not belong to the humanish.

Still, that just meant that Fiera was encouraged more than ever to make this training session go out with a bang. She stretched first and then considered her approach. The last thing she had to train Drips was ‘intimidation’, the ability to scare her opponents with just a glance. That was… a difficult thing to teach Drips, all things considered. Sure, she had the impressive size of sarane, along with the long claws, sharp fangs, and sharper eyes. But she never really used them to their full effect. The hen really preferred to just lay there and sleep instead of doing any hard work, and would happily her opponents in a fight crawl all over her instead of scaring them off. So Fiera would just have to train her out of that. It would be a difficult task, but she did have some ideas on how to get it done.

First and foremost, she had brought a gemmorn with her. These little creatures were a common sight in the mines and were a well known pocketpet amongst collectors of that sort of thing. Fiera wasn’t much for it herself, but she did find that pocketpets came in handy sometimes. In particular, gemmorns seemed to be quite convinced that they were a great deal larger than they actually were. Despite their small size, they were incredibly fearsome, had a tendency to nip, and more than anything else seemed to have little fear. That was the key here- Fiera knew that if Drips could spook a gemmorn, she could scare just about anything, and her ‘opponent’ for this lesson would be one that was too small to actually hurt her if it was able to break through her fledgling intimidation and fight back. With any luck, this plan would go off without a hitch. Fiera 3 Drips 11.3/11.3 Intimidation 3

Helping in that of course, Fiera still had plenty of treats. The humanish always brought with her a huge cooler full of frozen meat for Drips to chew through, and today was no exception. She didn’t bring as much as usual considering that this was the last trick she had to teach the sarane, but it was still more than enough, just in case. Other than that, Fiera didn’t think she’d need much else for this trick. With that in mind, Fiera got out the little cage holding the gemmorn. It turned to look at her and almost immediately let out an annoyed hiss. “Good.” Fiera said with a chuckle. “You’ll need that.” She said before walking over to Drips. “Drips, girl! Are you ready?” She said. The hen looked up at her but didn’t move from her position on the ground, opting to let out a pleased rumble instead.

Fiera set the cage down in front of her, ready to begin. It was plenty big enough for the gemmorn, with a little cardboard ‘house’ in there as well if the critter wanted to get away. That seemed to be the last thing on the little lizard’s mind though, as it immediately began screeching up a storm. “Okay Drips… intimidate!” Fiera said, giving the command. Drips only lazily moved her head over though, completely nonplussed by the little critter. She moved her nose next to the cage while the pocketpet went berserk, and sniffed at it with a gentle curiosity. The gemmorn wasted no time however, and immediately stuck as much of its head as it could fit through the cage bars to give the hen a firm nip on the nose. It wasn’t anywhere near strong enough to break through Drips’ thick skin, but it did give her a shock.
