They walked for a little bit longer before Fiera finally stopped and glanced off the path. Deeper into the woods she could see that someone did some clearing, leaving a variety of stumps at different heights. They were sloppy and lopsided as well, implying that someone did it just to clear out the trees to keep the forest healthy as opposed to any actual logging activity. She didn’t think you could really get away with that sort of thing in the labs anyway. Still, the stumps of different heights would come greatly in handy for what she wanted to teach Icarus. She turned to her harachiu and grinned before hopping off the beaten path, waiting for her pet to follow her. She heard him hum with confusion and follow her hesitantly, still clearly a bit confused about all of this. “It’s ok! You’ll love this, I promise.” She reassured, even though she knew he didn’t understand her.

After all, all harachiu she had had loved learning this trick. The wings on the backs of these fairies weren’t just for show. Harachiu that possessed them were gifted with flight, though those that grew up in the labs had to be taught how to use it. Desiree, Amber, and Alice, her other harachiu had taken to it just fine. Now it was Icarus’s turn. In her experience so far, harachiu generally loved learning to fly. It was natural for them, and considering that most of them led lives where they had very little power, it gave them a boost in confidence and a sense of independence they didn’t have before. And if there was one thing that Icarus needed, it was confidence and independence. Maybe he would stop trying to run away if she did this. (Though perhaps he would end up flying away instead- now that would suck.)

Regardless of what he would do with that information though, learning to fly was something that Icarus had a right to know. It was a part of his biology and heritage, so regardless of Fiera’s personal opinions on how hard it was to catch him (he could move SURPRISINGLY fast on those little legs), it was something he had to be taught. “Are you ready, Icarus?” She said, turning to him. He just snorted at her cheerful tone and rolled his eyes, but that gave Fiera the opening she needed to dive at him. She quickly tucked her hands under his armpits and scooped him into the air. He immediately started screeching at kicking at her, refusing to tolerate being handled so impudently. Fiera sighed and let him tantrum as she carried him over to a nearby stump. It was tall enough that he would have to jump to get down, but not so tall that he would hurt himself if he did so.

Now that she had taught him come however, she could hopefully tempt him down from there. She set him down and- oh ok, he was determined to get off himself. Almost as soon as Icarus’ feet touched the stump and Fiera loosened her grip, he bolted off of the stump, determined to not give Fiera any sort of satisfaction. He leapt from the wood and landed a good two feet away, landing hard and spinning around on his heel to face her. Fiera had to admit it was a little impressive- he had made some good distance! “Wow, good job Icarus! Good fly!” She said, trying to get that command word in nice and early. Then, she offered him a blueberry for his efforts. Icarus sighed- of COURSE he had managed to do exactly what she wanted on accident. That was just his luck, wasn’t it? He snatched the blueberry away and ate it angrily.

Fiera chuckled as he ate. Icarus was a salty boy, that was for sure, but she was sure he’d come around. After all, this was an important lesson they were working on here, and she knew he was a determined lad. Once he figured out what it was she was going for here, she had no doubt that he would strive toward it until he got it right. Still, first they had to get there. “Okay, let’s try that again.” Fiera said, and reached out toward her harachiu. He saw her coming this time of course however, and so Fiera had to spend a few minutes chasing him around the clearing before she was able to catch him again. “Okay let’s- ow! Quit biting, come on!” She hissed before finally plopping him down on top of one of the taller stumps this time. He wouldn’t be leaping off of THIS one all helter skelter.

Sure enough, he glanced around before huffing loudly in Fiera’s direction. The humanish ignored him however and only crouched down next to the stump, holding her hands out as if to catch him. “Okay Icarus- come here! Fly!” She said, using the trick she had just taught him. The issen just looked at her like she was insane, his eyes wide and his mouth downturned. “No, it’s ok! Just come here! It’s safe, I promise!” She said, moving her hands into position more insistently. “Like a trust fall!” Fiera said, remembering something vague from her brief stint as a businesswoman back in the day. Icarus didn’t understand what she said, but something about her tone finally seemed to get to her. He groaned quietly and backed up across the stump before making a flying leap, his wings fluttering involuntarily as he threw himself into the air, his eyes squeezed shut.

Fiera caught him effortlessly, his light little body hardly even causing her arms to dip as he landed. He squeaked loudly as he hit her, and she could feel the heat of him blushing on her arm as she chuckled and lifted him again, setting him back up on one of the taller stumps. “Good fly, Icarus!” She said as she did so, patting him on the head. He didn’t seem to be focusing on her too hard now and was instead gently flapping his wings as if thinking about something. A smile, sly smile crept across Fiera’s face. It looked like he was starting to figure it out, even if he wasn’t quite there yet. “Want to try that again?” She said, not expecting an answer before crouching down in front of him again. “Okay Icarus- fly!” She said, dropping the pretense of ‘come’ completely. He glanced over at her, broken from his thoughts, and crouched down again.

He leapt off of the stump and flapped his wings even harder this time, and Fiera could tell that he was drifting further than last time as a result. To make up for that, Fiera took a few steps backwards and caught him a little more roughly that time, with his face smacking right into her collarbone. She winced slightly in sympathy, but as he pulled away it seemed that Icarus hardly noticed the impact. Instead he immediately began pointing insistently at the stump once more, his eyes drilling twin holes into Fiera’s face. She grinned- it looked like he had finally figured it out! “Alrighty then! Let’s get you set up!” She said, taking her harachiu to an even higher stump and plopping him down on the top. She quickly stepped backwards as he prepared to jump mere moments after she set him down, apparently not wanting to waste any more time on just sitting around.

“Okay, ready Icarus?” She said as the fairy crouched down again. “Okay and… fly!” She said, giving the command. Icarus didn’t need to be told twice, and launched off as fast as his legs would let him, sending him leaping into the air with his wings flapping as hard as possible. To Fiera’s delight, he actually did manage to keep going up for a few moments after juming off, fluttering in mid-air before his unpracticed wings gave out on him, sending him dropping inch after inch to the ground. It was a gentle landing this time though, even though Fiera didn’t catch him. He even laughed once, a harsh barking sound, equally unpracticed with that personality of his, and immediately ran back toward the stump to try and climb up it. Fiera laughed as well and tried to help him, but he simply slapped her hand away to do it himself.

It took him a few minutes to climb the stump oon his own, but whatever was more satisfying, Fiera supposed. When he stood on the top, victorious, Fiera only barely had to give the order to fly- he knew full well what he needed to do by now, he just had to practice enough to actually do it. Sure enough, his next leap off saw him gliding even further than before and getting a bit more height. The attempt after that was even further. Soon he found that he could even rise off the group without needung to jump, fluttering up and around Fiera’s face… and blowing a raspberry at her. Despite the disrespect, Fiera couldn’t help but chuckle. It was worth it to see Icarus finally smiling- a sight that before this was as rare as harachiu in general. As he dove and flew up, Fiera knew it was all worth it to see him finally happy.

It had been quite some time since Fiera had taken out Madison, huh? Not since the petitie tournament, the humanish realized. The public park was probably a sight for sore eyes for the candy corn bat by this point, though maybe not as much as the mines, where a bat was a lot more fitting. Still, Fiera had another competition she wanted to get the little creature ready for- the vai min mur contest that was coming up. Madison would be a shoo-in for it, in Fiera’s opinion. After all, candycorn bats usually only appeared around that time of year, and were practically mascots for the holiday! Still, Madison had mostly combat training so Fiera had set aside today to teach her something more… thematic. Vai min mur wasn’t just a harvest festival, after all. Madison needed to learn something… a little spookier. A little more evil than she was.

And what better for that than learning how to bite your opponents as hard as possible? Sure Madison didn’t have the bone crunching strength of, say, a rakai sarane, but she could probably still pull off a good nip… right? Probably. Still, Fiera had her sack of candy and was ready to go, so they might as well get started. She also had a training bracer made of leather and metal that had been good for teaching her pets how to bite for a while now, with no harm to herself in the process. It would work well for this, she was sure. With that in mind, she gently pushed Madison’s head forward, pressing it into the leather of the glove until the bat’s teeth touched it. She reeled away the second the humanish took her hand away, squeaking angrily. Still, Fiera leaned into it. “Good job, Madison! Good nibble!” She said, and tossed the bat a piece of candycorn.

As usual, Madison went nuts for candycorn- it was right in her species’ name after all. It was gone in an instant, down her throat, and she immediately whipped around to beg for more. “Ah ah-” Fiera said, holding the bracer up again. “Nibble!” She ordered, but the candy corn bat didn’t seem… particularly into that. She made a few brief moves toward the bracer, perhaps barely nudging it with her face, but didn’t actually bite it. Fiera sighed and placed a piece of candy corn on the bracer. “Madison, nibble.” She said flatly, and that put the bat into action. She lunged toward the bracer and latched onto the candy, scraping at the leather as she pulled away. “Good job, good nibble!” Fiera praised, not giving her a treat this time- after all, she was still chewing on the reward she had pulled off of Fiera’s arm. With any luck, now she had an idea of what Fiera wanted from her.

When Madison was done chewing, Fiera gestured to her bracer another time. “Madison, nibble.” She said, pointing at it. There was no candy there though, so the bat ambled around a bit, looking at it awkwardly. “Come on, you know this! Nibble!” Fiera said insistently, and finally Madison went in for the “kill”. Sort of. It was a very slow lunge and a very weak bite, but at least Fiera felt it this time. “...Good job, Madison!” She said, tossing the bat a piece of candycorn. Hopefully she just needed a bit more practice and then she would get it. After all, Madison had been trained as a fighting pet- lollygagging around like that before striking was what lost matches, and Fiera and Madison both knew that full well by now. When Madison was finished eating that piece as well, Fiera got ready for what would hopefully be the last command.

“Okay Madison.” Fiera said, pointing to what was hopefully a now quite familiar spot on her bracer. “Nibble!” She said, giving the command. To her delight, Madison finally seemed to get it and raced to the glove, latching onto it just as soon as the humanish could blink. Fiera was delighted- she was fast! She was sharp! She was… not terribly effective. As she watched, the candycorn bat was definitely tearing into the bracer at full force, shaking her head and making tiny squeaky noises that Fiera ASSUMED were meant to be fearsome growls, but nothing was really… happening. Really, she was mostly getting spit all over it. It was probably her own fault for assuming that a species that ate mostly candy would have fantastic jaw strength though. “...Good job, Madison!” Fiera said, taking the bracer away. “We should be ready for the contest now!” She said, hoping that the judges didn’t particularly care if the creatures they saw weren’t… fearsome.
