These initial obedience tricks were doing Decima well. The red devil hated them, of course, but having a few basic commands under her (non existant) belt would help the pair of them communicate better in the future. Could Decima communicate…? She was certainly intelligent that was for sure, but unlike her haraichu the red devil only seemed capable of vocalizing in snickers, snarls, and screeches. Not exactly speaking material. She had heard of her species participating in telepathy… but Fiera had gotten nary a syllable from her in that respect. At the very least, she thought while looking at Decima’s claws, she might be able to learn Labs Sign Language… but that would have to wait. Fiera didn’t know her nearly well enough to start teaching her such complicated topics, and she didn’t think Decima had the patience with her to learn a bunch of initially useless hand flapping.

While Fiera thought to herself quietly, Decima was taking the opportunity to explore, and by that she meant ‘sneak off’. She glanced back at Fiera, lost in thought, and made another attempt to climb the gulley’s wall, flapping her tiny wings uselessly. She scrabbled against the roots protruding from the wall for purchase, straining against the leash trying to reel her back in. Fiera looked up, hearing the grunts of effort, and immediately disapproved. How had she gotten over there so far? She scrambled to her feet, brushing off the leaves from her pants (which wasn’t especially helpful, as the pair’s wrestling had alrready gotten them quite dirty.). At least this confirmed which trick to teach Decima next. She needed this ‘pet’ to be able to hold still for more than ten seconds at a time, or else Fiera would need to keep a constant eye on her to keep her under control.

She approached the devil’s leash, and tugged on it gently. “Decima, no.” She said politely. The devil likely knew better by now. Decima obliged, getting off of the wall… by jumping from it and landing squarely on Fiera’s face. She cackled madly as Fiera yelped with surprise, prying the surprisingly heavy creature off of her. And these things were supposed to be capable of flight? Decima kept snickering as Fiera dropped her unceremoniously, holding strands of the humanish’s hair close to her chest. “Oh, very nice.” Fiera said dryly, and put her hands on her hips. “Well, now I can reward you for your ‘good behavior’- you get to learn another trick.” She walked back over to the leash, and hit the ‘reel’ button. Sure enough, Decima soon found her free range decreasing steadily, until she was but five feet from Fiera. “Ok, now. Stay.” Fiera said, backing away.

Decima, of course, didn’t listen at all, immediately launching herself at Fiera in retaliation. The leash held fast however, forcing Decima to stay whether she wanted to or not. The devil sat down, still snarling. Fiera left her like that for about thirty seconds, checking her phone pointedly, before walking back over. “Good job. Good stay.” She said, before Decima could start up again with the ‘rip your knees off’ song and dance. She tossed the devil another piece of jerky, which she slapped away angrily… only to suck up her pride and pick it up a moment later. She ate it as messily as possible however, looking directly at her owner while doing so. When she was done, Fiera pointed at her again. “Decima, stay.” She emphasized, and began walking away again. She heard a high pitched noise behind her as she left, making babbling sounds. Decima could mock her all she liked, it didn’t change her walking away.

Fiera stood there, about twenty feet away again, for even longer this time. After approximately a minute, she checked walked back again. She found Decima face down on the ground when she came back, making a long, low noise. Well, at least she had held still. That was progress! Fiera got out two pieces of jerky this time. “Good stay, Decima!” She said, and held her hand out to the devil. When she didn’t get up, she placed them on her back. Decima slapped at her, but missed before finally sitting up and claiming her treat. Fiera sidled around while she ate, setting Decima’s leash back to ‘free range’ mode before trying the trick again. Sure enough, even with the option to run around this time, Decima stayed in one spot. Fiera even showed her that she COULD move a couple times, tugging on the leash to demonstrate how it pulled out now, but Decima still stayed still, with a resentful sense of boredom. Well, a trick was a trick, no matter how much Decima liked it.

They were making great progress. Despite Decima’s abject grumpiness and uncooperativeness. Fiera only had one trick left on her list, With any luck, it wouldn’t be too hard to teach. These were called basics for a reason- they weren’t exactly hard to teach, they were just the groundwork for further, more complicated things. Fiera couldn’t say if they were getting along any better, however. If anything, Decima was trying even harder to act out, to get a rise out of the cat woman. Fiera supposed things had been going her way this whole time, and now Decima wanted to get a ‘win’ in as well. She wasn’t about to let her have it however, not when they were in the home stretch. Fiera had other pets she needed to train after all- her ghaenelt Lionel, her lamadidron Lincoln. Decima wasn’t the only one with a to do list.

The final trick on Decima’s to do list however, was ‘come’. Fiera couldn’t help but cringe a bit. The other tricks she had learned could at least rely on Decima’s tendency to stew in grumpy, childish silence, a refusal to do anything matching up well with the purpose of the trick. Come was a lot more proactive however, and would require her to, well. Do something. Of her own volition. Fiera didn’t let it show that she was a little nervous about this as a result, or was it irritated? She’d just have to manage it like she would any other trick, and not give Decima the opportunity to get a hair out of line. The devil seemed relatively calm right now at least, lying on the floor of the gulley and scooping leaves up to pour over herself. Fiera rustled in her treat box, getting out a piece of jerky before Decima could notice her presence.

She held it up in the air before whistling sharply to get Decima’s attention. The red devil jumped, but didn’t roll over- she wouldn’t be seen giving Fiera the time of day THAT easily. Fiera sighed, and waved the jerky around. “Decima! Come!” She said. Decima glanced at her, likely interested in the new word more than anything, and rolled over fully upon seeing the piece of jerky in Fiera’s hand. “That’s right, you know you want it!” Fiera encouraged, wiggling it at her. “Come here!” Decima sat up, and tugged on the leash experimentally. Fiera had set it to it’s unspool setting again, so she was free to move. Decima looked at the leash, and then her ‘owner’, before sighing and getting up. Fiera smiled carefully as Decima plodded over, practically dragging herself to Fiera’s feet. Enthusiasm was lacking, but at least she had done what Fiera wanted.

“Good job, Decima!” Fiera chirped. “Good come!” She said again, and gently tossed Decima the jerky. She had considered offering it to the devil in the palm of her hand as that was more polite, but realized that that was probably the easiest way to get her fingers bitten off. As Decima chewed, she shuffled backward, glancing between what was behind her and where Decima was. The red devil looked at her, but didn’t follow, clearly not wanting anything to do with whatever stupidity Fiera was cooking up. When the humanish was about twenty feet in the opposite direction from where she started, she dug around for another piece of jerky before holding it up again. “Ok Decima, come!” She said. The red devil looked her up and down, and a bead of sweat rolled down Fiera’s neck at the imp’s judgement. “Come on!” She said again, trying to put as much enthusiasm into it as possible.

Finally, Decima sighed and walked over again, leaving long tracks in the fallen leaves. Before Fiera could even think to hand or toss the jerky to Decima, the devil slapped it out of her hand, picking it up off the ground and eating it whole. That was a little gross in Fiera’s opinion, but this wasn’t exactly a manners lesson. “Good job!” She said while Decima chewed, but the devil refused to look at her again. Fiera sighed, and decided to give it another go- this time walking far enough away that Decima couldn’t tell if she had a treat or not. Indeed, she didn’t, holding her hands behind her back. She called for Decima again, and sure enough the devil came trotting over- indicating that she knew what “come” meant whether or not Fiera was actively holding something for her to eat. Of course, she was still mad when Fiera showed that she wasn’t holding anything, but that wasn’t Fiera’s problem. Until Decima tried biting her ankles off, that is.

Fiera had managed to drag Decima back to the kennels with only a little fussing and screeching. It was certainly less than what it had taken to get her to the park, at least. As much as Fiera would have liked to get to know the devil more, she had other pets to train. One of those was Lionel, her baby stagnant ghaenelt. The little lad was a ‘custom’, or so she had been told, and so had never been seen to grow. Frankly, if you weren’t careful, it would be easy to assume he wasn’t alive at all. No matter what Fiera tried with this creature, he didn’t show any signs of getting healthier, and in fact she had been told that it was NORMAL for this type of ghaenelt to be this… decrepit. She decided that some attention and fresh air would be good for him, at any rate.

It would be good to teach him some things, too. Starting with his name, of course. She stopped in a clearing in some of the woods of the park, settling him in a hollowed out stump that was filled with nice, soft fallen leaves. He didn’t respond in the slightest, even to make himself comfortable, and just sat there breathing wetly. Fiera tried not to let it get her down, even if it was a little disturbing. For her own peace of mind, she adjusted some of his limbs to a more comfy looking position, and tilted his head to a less broken looking angle. His eyes stared straight ahead, milky and blind looking. Could he even see? Well, she hoped he could hear, at least. And eat- it would be difficult to give him treats otherwise. She had brought several scraps of soft meat with her, supposedly the majority of a ghaenelt’s diet.

“Lionel…” She cooed softly, hoping for a reaction. After a few seconds, Lionel’s head moved slightly, leaning to one side. Fiera wasn’t sure if it was a reaction to her saying his name, or if it was just his head falling over, but she’d take it. “Good boy, Lionel!” She said, and gave him a piece of meat, so soft it was practically a glob of fat. When he didn’t take it, she cringed a little harder and nudged it closer, until it was nearly touching his face. Only then did he finally seem to smell it, his ears perking a tiny bit as she heard wheezy snuffling sounds coming from him. She sighed with relief as he finally used one of his legs to bring it closer, snapping it down with as great an effort as he could muster. It was pathetic, but at least she didn’t have to worry about force feeding him his treats.

She was pretty sure that would be defeating the purpose, after all. She made sure to give him some brief scritches behind the ears too, while saying his name. Even if he couldn’t see her very well, she knew his sense of touch was likely intact. Then, she paused for a moment, letting him return to baseline. When the silence finally settled around them, she spoke up again. “Lionel…” She said gently, and this time his ears flickered as well as his head tilted. She tittered cheerfully while praising him for a job well done, and pushed another slice of meat toward him, which he nibbled on gratefully. She pet him behind the ears while thinking to herself. Sick or not, this ghaenelt seemed to be a fast learner. That was a relief, as reading his body language was hard enough for her. Though, she supposed learning was hard enough for him as well.

Fiera decided to give him one final test. She began to speak, saying random words, whatever came to mind, just babbling about her day. Lionel just laid there in response. Someone just glancing at him would think he was a lifeless doll, or worse. Once she was sure she had meandered around for long enough verbally, she finally slipped his name in there. “-And then I went to the park with Lionel-” Sure enough, his ears perked up, and the custom ghaenelt shifted a foot. Fiera laughed with delight, clapping her hands. “There’s a good boy, Lionel!” She giggled, and got him another chunk of meat, even bigger than before. After all, for having learned a trick so fast, such a good boy deserved an even better treat.... Until he started choking on it. Fiera was quick to clap him on the back and he coughed it up… only to curl up in her lap. Well. That was quite a nice reward too.
