It had been a while since Fiera had trained a pet that wasn't hers. Not that her training business was slow per se, but it was very much one of those things thatcame and went in bursts of activity. It had been a slow season for her... until sarane came back. Since Fiera first came to the labs sarane had been... well, they existed but were at the time infertile. They were valued as fighting pets but little else, as the days of their breeding seasons and dominance fights had long since passed. Quite recently though, something changed. People weren't sure if it was something in the water or a change in the air or some sort of mass hormonal change, but all of the sarane had suddenly become fertile again, and the fervid interest, breeding, and battling that came with that returned to the populace of the labs again. Everything she had been hearing recently was all about sarane. The breeding center was running specials on them, her WATT was blowing up with new videos on how to train them to fight, and a tournament for them had recently started up as well. Fiera wanted to bring her own sarane, Algol into it to try and get him up to breeding form, but that was still a ways off yet. Still, people from all over the labs were now raring to go with the sarane battles. Still, with all of this newfound (and perhaps old but resurfacing) interest in sarane, that didn't mean that people always wanted to train them themselves. After all, sarane could be aggressive, moody creatures, especially drakes, and not everyone had the time (or dexterity and strength) to deal with them. That was where Fiera and her (spectacular, successful, wonderful) training service came in to fill that niche.

The humanish's business had been booming with the recent return of the pseudo-dragons, and she couldn't be happier with it. The metaphorical phone had been ringing off of its allegorical hook for her, and today's training session was just another example of that. Drips had been entrusted to her by a ssashirk named Haix, and was a frankly stunning looking sarane hen. One of the newest developments in sarane was the presence of brown sarane that had unusual markings on their body, ones that had never shown up on sarane before now. Drips was one of them. She had the usual light brown back that hens were known for and the pale countershading, but down her back it looked like someone had dropped some darker brown paint, giving her a... well, a paint spattered appearance. It was quite attractive if Fiera said so herself, and she could see why Haix would want to train her up.

Her personality was also surprisingly pleasant for a sarane. Fiera was used to sarane being... well, rather grumpy and uncooperative beasts. She could see why when they were such large creatures with very sharp teeth and claws, but were for some reason obligated to listen to small, scaleless, and chatty creatures. It already felt beneath Fiera when she had to negotiate prices with the cashiers at the supermarket- she could hardly imagine what it would feel like to a giant, magnificent beast. That being said though, Drips' personality wasn't like most she had seen, despite her perfectly normal appearance as a tier one hen. Instead of having that sharp, glinting intellect that most sarane were known for, she seemed rather... well, lazy for lack of a better word, in Fiera's opinion. She seemed to take things one step at a time, plodding through the world instead of stalking through it.

Perhaps it was because she was a hen? Fiera normally dealt in drakes, though she had come into possession of a few hens lately. She hadn't had much time to get to know them, but it was clear that their personalities were usually at least a little different from those of the drakes. Perhaps a bit more subdued, a bit gentler, a bit less... positively stuffed with testosterone. Still, Drips seemed even calmer than that, just a generally fat and happy creature. Fiera was perfectly fine with that though, as it meant that she would likely be quite easy to train and capable of being bribed with food. She just sort of looked around with a lazy, happy look on her face and didn't seem to bothered by anything. She wasn't an ideal choice for a battle pet in Fiera's opinion, but she had certainly trained worse in the past.

Her and Drips had been moving pretty slowly so far, but Fiera figured it was about time they started settling down and looking for a proper area to train in. Selecting an area usually wasn't too hard, but there were some things you needed to look for. After all, she couldn't exactly train a creature to rip things to shreds around small children. She would have a hard time finding targets to practice on in a wide open field. Sitting next to a stream would probably distract the hen too much to train her properly, and she couldn't well train her in the middle of a path either, in case someone needed to walk by. So usually she ended up training her pets in fields next to wooded areas or in clearings within the various forests of the public park. Not too hard to find, if she was being honest.

Fiera earned surprisingly few odd looks as she walked down the path. Usually if she came in with a large and unusual creature she would get plenty of people looking at her, and 'large and unusual creatures' usually included sarane. Since their popularity had boomed recently though, people barely gave her and Drips a glance as they passed by. If anything, they were looking at Fiera's antics as she tried to drag the hen down the path. She had a rather plodding pace despite the humanish's eagerness to get started, and no amount of prodding and pulling could get her to hurry up. She hadn't been trained anything yet after all, not even how to be lead on a leash, so Fiera was less leading her and more trying to keep her from walking off into the horizon without her input. Thankfully though, she had just enough strength to keep them on course.

It wasn't easy though, so Fiera was relieved when she finally spotted a spot across a field where she could set up shop to train Drips. The path Fiera was on was through a winding field of long grass, and several yards out the field was bordered with thin woodland. It would be perfect for what Fiera had planned. "Alright then... come on Drips!" She said, leaning back on the leash and trying to drag the sarane hen out. At first Drips wasn't particularly eager to get going. She was a bit like a steamroller. Slow and steady, but incredibly difficult to turn. After some firm tugs though, Fiera was finally able to get the hen to step off of the path and follow her into the field. She seemed to like it now that Fiera was paying closer attention, gently sniffing the grass and rumbling happily. Even if she didn't know what was happening, Drips was having a nice day.

It took some doing, but Fiera was finally able to wrangle Drips across the field, despite the sarane's attempts to completely distract herself with the clouds of insects that would rise from the grass and swarm around her head when they were disturbed. Fiera had to keep yanking her out of them and forward as the hen tried to eat them. Still, eventually they made it to the edge of the field, where the tall grass segued into the occasional bush and tree. Fiera sighed with relief and tied Drips' lead to a nearby tree, letting the hen settle in while Fiera got her stuff out. It didn't take too long, as Drips flopped against a tree almost immediately, huffing happily as she used its bark to scratch her back. Fiera was glad she was enjoying herself- having her 'student' in a good mood would make things easier when it was time to start training.

Without further ado, Fiera dropped her backpack on the ground. It was, honestly, massive and most people would be amazed that a creature as lithe as Fiera was able to carry it. It was one of those gargantuan hiking affairs, though Fiera was hardly the type to tie a sleeping bag to the top of it. She had much better uses for that space. It was a load off of her back though, and she stretched accordingly, glad to be free of it. Then she walked over to Drips and gave the sarane a pat on the head. "Are you ready to begin then, Drips?" She said sweetly, and the brown hen sarane practically purred in response. Fiera chuckled and quirked an eyebrow. Drips seemed like an easy pet to deal with so far. She could only hope that she would stay that way and prove easy to train as well.

Fiera looked at the list of tricks she was to train Drips today. Unlike a lot of her training jobs, there weren't a lot of 'basic' tricks on here, and Fiera wasn't sure if she was allowed to teach them or not. It was kind of awkward because she couldn't give Drips orders to adjust her position (such as come, stay, or sit) and she would just have to hope that the sarane would tolerate her touch. Instead, the tricks that she had before her were fighting moves, stuff to damage one's foes in the tournament circuit. Fiera was always happy to teach a pet to defend itself, though she was wondering how well this stuff would work with Drips, considering her... easygoing demeanor. She was pretty sure that in the five minutes she had turned around to consult the list, the hen had already fallen asleep against the tree.

Still, she had to get started and pick one already. She was pretty much just burning daylight by this point. Eenie, meenie, miney... yeah, bite. That would do it. Let's see... Fiera grabbed a large branch that was laying on the ground nearby. It had fallen from one of the surrounding trees, most likely after a storm. It was old and battered enough that it had lost all of its smaller twigs, but was still sturdy and strong enough that Fiera couldn't feel any give in it when she tried bending it. It would be perfect for the sarane to chew and learn to bite on- if she could convince her to put it in her mouth to start with. Obviously, she couldn't imagine plain wood would be very tasty to a naturally predatory creature. But Fiera had managed it before and doubted that Drips would be the one to break her streak.

It wasn't like Fiera was incapable of motivating her either. She unzipped her bag, glancing over her shoulder at Drips. If the sarane knew that Fiera had food, she didn't show it. From her massive backpack then, Fiera pulled out a large plastic box. It was her trusty cooler, stuffed to the brim with half frozen chunks of fresh meat for Drips to chomp through- provided that she cooperated. Fiera bought them from local butcheries, just buying their scraps in bulk. It was a surprisingly cheap method of obtaining treats for her carnivorous pets (or in this case, someone else's carnivorous pet) considering that they weren't going to use those pieces for much other than sausage anyway. She usually made out like a bandit with them, and kept them in a chest freezer in her apartment until it was time to train. The fresh meat was always a hit with her students as well.

Luckily Drips didn't seem to be picking up on the scent of fresh meat right now anyway. Fiera was in the clear for now. Ideally, her plan was simple. Most creatures (who weren't overly aggressive) would open their mouth at least a little bit when something foreign was pressed against their lips, and hopefully Drips was no exception. From there, it would be a simple manner of getting her to bite more and more until she finally broke through the branch. Each time she so much as touched it though, she would be offering her a treat, which she had no doubt the sarane would accept. With most pets they had the idea down within half an hour. Drips didn't seem too slow, so she didn't see any reason why this would be different. She had plenty of treats too though, so she could afford to take her time in teaching her.

With that in mind, Fiera dragged the cooler of meat closer to Drips. The hen barely even seemed to notice, only flicking her ear slightly at the sound of it scraping against the grass. Once that was in position (with a convenient window in the top for Fiera to reach down and grab treats out of while sitting on it- useful for the stronger pets), Fiera went back to her bag and picked up the stick again. It was pretty long, so hopefully it would be good for a couple bites even if it broke into pieces. Still, she wouldn't know once she got started. She held it on her lap as she sat in front of Drips. "Drips!" She called, trying to get the sarane's attention. "Over here!" She said. It took her ages to open her eyes and look at Fiera- after all, she hadn't learned her name yet.
