Fanged thought about following her but decided to do as she was told and take the other hallway. The hallway was quite narrow and somehow lined with more doors than she could count. She opened up a door and peered inside. The layout of this room was quite similar to the one she had just left. She opted out of exploring it and decided to try one of the other doors. This one was much larger and held a bed in the centre. There was a small table next to the bed and a small wardrobe against the far wall. She opened the wardrobe and discovered a number of dresses inside. Just when she was feeling like she should go check on Ingrid, the Malii appeared in the doorway and began to help her investigate. She trotted over to the wardrobe and pounced onto one of the dresses, scoring it with her sharp claws.

She ripped the dress apart and revealed a small, silver key. Fanged pocketed it in case she found a use for it later. Ingrid rolled around for a moment in the shredded fabric, enjoying a brief moment of playtime. Then, Fanged moved over to the other side of the room and began to rummage through the drawers. She pulled out a knife and frowned at it. That seemed like a rather dangerous object for the mansion to throw at her. She dropped it on the ground and continued to search. She found a few more items that she didn’t recognize, but nothing particularly interesting. Soon after she came across something that caught her attention. She grabbed a bright, red gem. It looked like it was meant to be placed into something, but first she’d have to find out where that was. Ingrid watched her for a moment before deciding there was nothing left in the room for them.

Fanged was determined to find out where the gem fit. She moved to the bed and peered underneath. Surprisingly, there was a lot of space underneath the bedframe. She wriggled forward and disappeared into the darkness. Her whole body could fit underneath the bed before she emerged on the other side. Suddenly, she heard a voice coming from behind her. She quickly turned around, eager to confront whoever had been speaking. To her surprise, she came face to face with a portrait of an elegant woman. The portrait began to speak.
“Once shot, twice shy. Find the book that can teach you to fly,” it said.
Fanged was confused by the strange words. She had an idea what they meant, and she wasn’t sure why the painting was trying to tell her anything. She decided she might as well try and track down the book that it wanted her to find.

She started to head back towards the first room, but then stopped. She remembered that she had seen books on the hallway shelves earlier. Perhaps she should check on them first. She picked up a book and discarded it when it had nothing to do on flight. Eventually, she spotted a book on birds that seemed like it would fit the bill. Fanged took the book from the shelf and flipped through the pages. She returned to the room and spotted Ingrid back in the wardrobe, ripping things up.
“Well, I found a book for you,” she muttered to the portrait.
She didn’t quite know how to give a book to a portrait. She kind of just set it down awkwardly in front of it. Once she did that, the portrait went silent and swung open to reveal a strange space inside. Fanged decided to place the gem inside the slot.

She watched the gem disappear into the hole. A moment later, a tiny, green light flickered on and off in the air above the book. Fanged picked up the book and examined it carefully. When she opened the book, it sucked her and Ingrid inside. They were enveloped in a green light and it took a good minute before it faded. The sensation of being transported was not a pleasant one. She rubbed at her eyes as she tried to clear the spots from them. She felt slightly nauseous but Ingrid looked entirely unaffected. The room they were in now was made entirely of stone. There were chains on the wall and a small, barred window in the corner.
“Does the mansion have a dungeon? What prisoners would a mansion even need to keep,” Fanged muttered.
Ingrid didn’t have as much qualms being in a dungeon and was quite content to explore.

The walked around the dungeon, entering through an opening that turned out to be an individual cell. For the most part it was empty, hosting only a single bed and desk. On the wall, there was a strange symbol that looked like it was made of metal. Fanged had no idea what it was supposed to mean. She thought about taking a closer look at it, but decided that it might be better to leave it alone. Being trapped in a dungeon was not ideal, and she didn’t want to end up in a situation that she couldn’t get out of. She moved on and explored the rest of the dungeon. Ingrid followed eagerly. From her lower vantage point, she was able to spot a small opening close to the ground. She indicated to Fanged that the woman should come closer to investigate. Fanged complied and crouched down to take a closer look.

It was a small hole, barely big enough for someone to crawl through. She poked her head into the hole and saw a small, dimly lit room. There was a small table and chair, a shelf filled with books and a large, iron door in the far end of the room. Centered in the room was a long, metallic table that had chains placed across it. Fanged was unsure if this was some sort of torture chamber or perhaps some sort of demented interrogation room.
“I don’t think I want to go inside there,” she commented to Ingrid.
The Malii poked her head through the opening as well, not quite understanding the meaning behind what she was seeing. She tilted her head and glanced at Fanged before wriggling her body through the opening. Fanged swore and looked for a way to follow. It soon became evident that was the only entrance.

She pushed herself up against the opening and forced her body to fit through the small gap. Every muscle in her body screamed not to do it, but she couldn't simply abandon Ingrid in the potentially dangerous room. After a few moments, she managed to squeeze through the opening. When she emerged, she was greeted by a strange sight. The room was filled with the sounds of rattling chains and low, ominous rumbling. The walls were covered in a red substance and there were strange markings on the floor. Her first presumption was that the substance was blood, but closer examination revealed it to be paint instead. Ingrid trotted over to greet her happily. There was a second table with a figure chained to it. The figure was clad in a black robe and appeared to be inanimate. The figure was also very tall and thin. Its face was obscured by its hood.

Fanged could distinguish that the figure was actually some sort of training mannequin.
"Is this…?" Fanged began to ask, but then stopped. She wasn't sure she wanted to know the answer.
Ingrid didn’t know how to respond, partly because she was incapable of speaking common and partly because she didn’t understand what had Fanged so freaked out about this room. But if the woman wanted to leave, the Malii would help her find a way out. Fanged walked up to the figure and examined it. The figure was made entirely of hard fabric. She poked at the figure's chest and found that it was more solid than expected. Was it made of metal as well? She moved to the back of the figure and discovered that it was hollow. When she squinted in the low light, she could make out a small indentation in the back of the strange mannequin.

She pulled at the indentation, but nothing happened. She tried again, harder. A small, hidden compartment opened up. Inside was a small key. She picked up the key and examined it. It was similar to the one that she had found earlier and was carrying around.
“These had better lead to a way out of here,” she commented in a snippy tone.
Ingrid decided to search for a door. There wasn’t an obvious exit to the room, but she figured there must be a way out somewhere. The opening they had come through would be a little too high up to try crawling back up to. After searching the room, she located a small, circular hole in the floor on the far corner. Ingrid lowered her body and pushed on the edge of the hole. It slid open and she climbed through. There was another room on the other side.

Ingrid landed on the ground in the new room with a soft thud. Fanged quickly noticed where she had disappeared to and moved to join her. It was a bit trickier for the woman to maneuver herself through the opening, but she managed it with only a little bit of difficulty. Once both of them were in the next room, they peered around. The room was empty, save for a small staircase leading down. They descended the stairs and found themselves in yet another room. This one had a small door in the back. The entire area looked decisively less like a dungeon and Fanged was hardly about to complain about that. They entered the room and closed the door behind them. There was a small desk and a chair near the door. On the desk was a piece of parchment. Fanged picked it up and read it out loud.

“To Kaelyn and Karter, from Adalric. We are in need of your assistance once again. We have been unable to contact any of the people we sent to investigate the rumors of the great beast lurking within the lake. Please send your response through Izer mail." Fanged read the passage aloud. She hadn't heard any rumors pertaining to the lake in the city. Perhaps this was some kind of story that the mansion had made up.
She pocketed the piece of paper. Even though it had nothing to do with her, perhaps it would come in handy later. Ingrid hopped up onto the desk and stared at the door. She turned to look at the door and considered her options. Neither of them knew if there was anything else to be found here. Fanged was inclined to think that the piece of paper was it. However, leaving was not always so simple.
