Minnow looked disappointed, but she followed Fanged’s advice and moved on to explore the rest of the room. Perhaps then she would be able to find the beetle again on her own. Fanged decided that she would be productive as well and joined the Tailypo in her search across the room. Maybe if it was safe enough here it would make a decent area to train a trick or two.
“After all, we don’t want you to slack on learning the basics. It’ll be easier for both of us if you can learn to listen to commands that will keep you safe.” She remarked.
The openness of the room made her feel more at ease than she often did in the mansion. If something were to approach her, she could see it from a variety of distances. She kept one eye on Minnow at all times just to make sure the Tailypo didn’t get up to too much mischief.

She and Minnow managed to find a couple of pocketpets and a firefly lurking about within the room. With the area cleared, Fanged thought it would be a reasonable time to try training a trick. She had brought some cooked fish along in order to entice Minnow to participate in training. They would start simple by training her name. She picked up the Tailypo and moved her to the middle of the room. There would be enough open space here to start.
“Minnow!” She started by calling out her name.
Minnow was easily distracted, but once she caught sight of the cooked fish, she was eager to switch her attention to Fanged. With her focus shifted, the woman knew she needed to get Minnow to associate her name with getting a treat. She stepped closer and leaned down.
“Minnow!” She called out again. The Tailypo briefly lifted her gaze away from the fish to meet Fanged’s eyes as she spoke.

Fanged considered that brief eye contact to be a success. She allowed Minnow to have a piece of fish as reward. The Tailypo was pleased and ate quickly. Now that she had an expectation for reward, she hoped Minnow would be eager enough to continue training.
“Minnow!” She called her name out again.
Minnow took a moment, but she looked up at Fanged in hope of getting more food. The woman waited a second, making Minnow hold her gaze for a bit longer before she moved to give her a treat.
“Good girl!” Fanged praised her.
The Tailypo snatched the treat out of her fingers and gobbled it up quickly. Fanged found it a bit unnerving to be training in a potentially dangerous place, but she felt comfortable in this room. The Tailypo was uncharacteristically focused when it came for food and she turned to beg for more treats from the woman.

Fanged pushed her away gently. “You’ll have to work more if you want another treat!” She teased the Tailypo. Minnow gave up the endeavor, though her eyes remained fixed on the food that Fanged carried. The woman placed a bit of distance between them. She needed Minnow’s attention to drift from the treats. It didn’t take her long to become distracted. Fanged took a few additional steps back. For Minnow to properly learn her name, she’d need to change things up a bit. When she felt prepared, she tested out the trick again.
“Minnow!” Fanged was now a bit further away, but Minnow perked up at the sound of her voice. It took her a few moments to locate the woman. When she had she made sure to look up and make eye contact with her.
Fanged made her hold the eye contact a bit before switching to praise. “Fantastic work!”

This time she didn’t reward Minnow with food. Instead, she reached down and gave her a loving scratch on the top of her head. The Tailypo was a small bit disappointed by the lack of food, but she realized that she still had an opportunity to earn another treat. Fanged hid the food behind her back though Minnow was still capable of smelling it.
“Minnow!” She stated the Tailypo’s name clearly.
Minnow trotted forward so she could meet Fanged’s gaze and kept eye contact with her until the woman moved to break it. Her performance was promptly rewarded with another piece of fish.
“Great job, Minnow! I think you’re starting to get the hang of this!” The Tailypo was pleased at the reward and devoured it in seconds. Fanged couldn’t help but be slightly amazed at the speed she could eat. In order to ensure that Minnow was properly learning her name, she’d need to try calling out something else.

“Rusty!” She called out the name of another pet. Minnow didn’t respond to this name and Fanged immediately felt proud of the little kittenoid. She still needed to repeat the trick a few more times to ensure that she had properly learned it though. She took more steps away from the Tailypo, moving until she had crossed the entire length of the room.
“Minnow!” She called out the proper name this time.
Minnow had been distracted by pawing at the blades of grass underfoot. At the sound of her name, she raised her head and looked for where the call had come from. She spotted Fanged a bit further away and moved closer. She stopped when she could meet her eyes and she held the gaze until the woman allowed her to look away.
“Perfect! You did that exactly right!” She leaned down and stroked the Tailypo as she gave her praise.

Fanged felt confident enough that Minnow had learned the trick and she was ready to do some exploring once again. She scooped up the Tailypo and headed towards the door. There was nothing left in this room and since she didn’t want to train further at the moment, it was pointless to stay here.
“You ready to explore some more?” She asked the small creature.
Minnow didn’t respond verbally, but she squirmed with enthusiasm. Fanged took a deep breath before opening the door. She wasn’t sure what to expect from the mansion this month, but it was best to play things safe.
“Oh, a hallway. Can’t say I was expecting that.”
The two of them were presented with a variety of doors to choose from. The lighting in this area was low, but some of the doors were covered in florescent paint, making them glow. Fanged wanted to pick one of them.

As she approached a glowing, pink door, she couldn’t help but feel suddenly paranoid. She didn’t think there was anything dangerous about at the moment. Her instincts would always lean towards paranoia at this point.
“Stick close to me, even after I put you down.” She warned Minnow.
She opened the door quickly, startling when a firework exploded as a trap activated. It was not a large enough explosion to harm her, but she did jump backwards. “Okay I think that was the only danger. I’ll need to be better about checking for traps in the future.”
Feeling a little caught of guard, she tentatively entered the room. Minnow immediately squirmed to be put down. She’d need to check the room first before allowing the small Tailypo to explore. The room she stood in was comparatively smaller to the last one. There were proper floorboards, though tiny plants grew upwards through the cracks.

She narrowed her eyes as she took in the essence of the room. She couldn’t help but feel that there were more surprises squirreled away. She didn’t feel comfortable placing Minnow on the ground here. She would be carried despite her protests. Her safety was top priority for the moment.
“You’ll have to settle in for now. Come on, I’ll show you how we can work together to explore the room. It doesn’t have to be a bad experience simply because I am holding onto you.”
Minnow seemed to settle down at the calming tone of her voice. She seemed to accept that it was her fate to be carried. This room had conventional furniture within it. That seemed like the best place to search for anything of value. If she was lucky, there could be some treasure hidden just out of sight.
“You can help me look. And we can have fun searching.”

She approached a vanity. The mirror was lined with glowing lightbulbs that alternated in colour between blue and orange. The design choice seemed rather odd, but the mansion itself didn’t seem to have any rhyme or reason to it this month.
“Be careful.” She warned Minnow as she leaned closer to get a better look at the mirror. Fanged tracked the mirror as well. She paid close attention in case it revealed something to her that she wouldn’t be able to see with her eyes alone. After a few minutes of staring, she decided that there was nothing to be revealed at the moment. Perhaps it would be worthwhile coming back to it. For now, she would see if she could open the vanity drawers. She pressed her hand against the wooden surface. The handle was only found after she pressed against the wood. With enough pressure, the wood flipped upwards, revealing a handle.

The contraption felt unnecessarily complicated. Hopefully this meant that there was something hidden away within the drawer. She pulled it open, frowning when the inside of the drawer appeared to be blocked with a solid, wood block.
“Another puzzle maybe?” She asked aloud. Minnow regarded the drawer with interest for a moment, but quickly grew distracted when she realized that it wasn’t particularly exciting.
Fanged decided that she was most likely needing to search for another hidden panel. It might not be a proper drawer, but she doubted that it was completely empty. She set Minnow down on the vanity. She used her body to block the possible escape paths that the Tailypo could take. To her surprise, Minnow seemed content to stare into the mirror while she took her time fiddling with the drawer. It took Fanged a few minutes until her fingers finally met a strange indentation in the wood. She lifted the secret panel open.

Hidden inside the strange contraption of a drawer was a small, silver key. Fanged wasn’t even sure if anything in this room had a lock to match it, but it seemed worthwhile to hang onto. With that handled, she scooped up Minnow and went to check some other areas within the room. There were a ton of fireflies she managed to collect as well as some pocketpets.
“That should be it, I think. I imagine this room doesn’t have anything left to give us.” She remarked.
Minnow seemed fine with being carried once Fanged headed towards the door. The door she chose was unlocked, leaving the mystery of the silver key still unsolved. She twisted the doorknob, bracing herself for another explosion of colour to occur. To her surprise, the area remained silent long enough for her to exit.
“Seems like the magic has decided to calm down for the moment.”

With the danger lessened for the moment, she found herself relaxing a bit. If it kept up like this, she would be able to allow Minnow to explore a little bit more independently. The new room she entered had a calmer energy, though Fanged would likely chalk that up to her own feelings of safety.
“Make sure to stay close.” She told Minnow as she placed the Tailypo down on the ground. She waited for the door to fully shut behind them before releasing her hold entirely.
Minnow immediately darted forward. Fanged had to keep herself from overreacting to the creature’s actions. She needed a little independence if she was going to grow up to be secure. Fanged moved her gaze to study the room. This one seemed smaller than she expected. At least it was smaller than the last few rooms. Even the rooms in her old apartment would be larger.
