Zipper enjoyed the ride along as Fanged took him to various tidepools. When they were finished observing, Fanged decided it was best to head to the next room. Zipper was growing accustomed to the mansion and he was excited to be moving to a new environment. The door felt cold to the touch as she opened it. She was mildly surprised when the room revealed before her was covered in a thin layer of ice.
“If you get too cold, we will leave quickly,” she told Zipper.
The Faeron moved up her arm, making sure to snuggle in close to her neck in order to maintain warmth. He didn’t want to leave this room just yet so he’d be careful! Fanged knew she needed to be careful as well. The ground was slippery underfoot and it would be easy for her to lose her balance. With that settled, she turned to explore.

The ice had intricate carvings in it that Fanged couldn’t decipher. She wondered if other clues in the room would be able to help her solve it or if they were simply done in a language that she couldn’t understand. The carvings intrigued her and she decided that her goal for this room would be to try and find a way to understand them. Zipper seemed more fascinated by the ice than he was with anything that might have been written on it. She allowed him to marvel at the ice until her was ready to investigate something else. There was a wooden bookshelf in the corner that caught Fanged’s eye. The piece was rather crude on first glance however, Fanged could admire the craftmanship it took to make it appear naturally cared out of driftwood. She ran her fingers along the surface, impressed for a moment when her fingers felt only smoothness.

Thankfully, there were a variety of interesting titles present on the bookshelf. They were written in common which ensured that she’d be able to read them. She approached them with an intense curiosity. Her attention was immediately drawn towards a bright red coloured tome. She daintily picked it up, taking a moment to wipe the dust off of it with her shirt. Zipper peered at the cover curiously. Of course, he couldn’t fully comprehend language well enough to read, but the images appealed to him.
“Looks like it’s a tome about war,” she remarked.
The cover was quite grizzly on further inspection. There were splatters of darker red, like splotches of spilled blood. The main image that was front and center on the cover was a Balgor. It certainly looked as though it had been out hunting. Underneath the image was a pair of crossed swords, both dotted with bright red.

The tome actually looked out of place in the room. If the mansion was water themed this month, this tome looked more align with fire. She flipped through the tome, quickly reading through the interesting bits. It was definitely an intriguing read, but not particularly helpful to her current situation. She reluctantly turned to grab another book. This time, she was more careful in her selection. When she saw one that might be useful to her plight, she picked it up. The front cover had images of runes, quite similar to the ones that had been carved into the ice. If this book couldn’t help her, she doubted any of the others would be able to. Zipper peered closely at the pictures while Fanged flipped through the book. After a while, she began to properly learn what the room was asking of her.
“Looks like it wants us to light some fire to melt the ice,” she told Zipper.

Now that she had an idea of what she needed to do, she placed the book back down on its place on the shelf. She wiped the dust coating her fingers off on a tablecloth and looked to see if she could find some matches. Zipper crawled down onto a desk, intent on helping her in her search. Fanged started by opening the drawers. They were crammed full of an assortment of junk. Hopefully, a pack of matches would be stashed somewhere inside. She frowned when the first drawer came up empty. Luckily, she managed to pick out an old matchbox from the second drawer she searched. She grabbed the matches and examined them closely. Zipper watched intently as she struck a match to light it. Fanged approached the nearest ice carvings and held the match close to it. Immediately, the runes illuminated in the orange glow, revealing a new phrase.

Fanged sighed as she realized she was going to need to consult the text again. Zipper watched the ice glow with interest. Fanged didn’t take long to translate the new passage. Since she had already grasped the basics, this new one was much easier to read. This time, the strange words were asking her to try and melt a hole straight through the floor. In order to accomplish this, she’d need to light something a little bigger than a small matchstick. Zipper flew over to the next drawer and tried to yank it open. He looked over towards Fanged when he couldn’t manage it. Fanged helped him with it and began to search for something extra flammable. She found it in the form of some ragged looking cloth. It would take a while to light, but once it was it would be a slow, consistent burn. Enough to melt the ice she needed.

Fanged was momentarily distracted in her quest for fire by the thrumming of a magical crystal. She looked at her fire-starting supplies and took them with her as she followed the pull of magic. Zipper didn’t have the same affinity for magic as she did. Zipper was focused instead on her fire equipment. He was anticipating the moment that she would set it ablaze. The detour was rather quick and the crystal was tucked away neatly underneath a quilt in the corner of the room. The quilt was coloured an icy blue and patterned with blue roses. It was a rather beautiful piece and a bit of a shame that it was wasting away in this icy room. Once Fanged had discarded the quilt, Zipper immediately became interested in it. He flew over to it and began to sniff at the soft fabric. He then snuggled up into the blanket and turned to watch Fanged.

Lighting the cloth she had retrieved would be the difficult part. She needed an ignition source to help it light. She decided that she would search around for something like lighter fluid or alcohol that could help her. Zipper perked up his head when she opened another drawer. She searched through the drawer, grinning with excitement when she came across a small bottle of liquor. It was travel sized and perfect for her purposes. Once she got the bottle open, she doused the frayed fabric of the cloth in a generous amount of alcohol. When she had deemed it good enough, she grabbed the pack of matches and selected the one she would use. She lit the match with practiced ease. Zipper’s eyes sparkled in fascination as he watched. The cloth caught fire when she touched the match to the fabric. Fanged took a moment to admire the fire as the cloth burned.

Fanged brought the burning cloth over towards the ice. She moved carefully, not wanting to set something else ablaze and burn the entire room down to the ground. Zipper moved closer, keeping his eyes fixed on the fire as his curiosity burned. What was this strange substance? Was it dangerous? What did it do? Fanged slowly brought the cloth down towards the ice that she needed to melt. There was nothing for it to catch on, but holding it close ensured that the ice would heat up. It took a while, but gradually the ice began to drip water as it warmed in the ensuing heat. Zipper drew closer as he watched, enthralled with the scene before him. It took a while, but the ice began to melt in the shape of a perfect circle. Try as she might, sections of the ice held steady even under the touch of heat.

When the circular portion of the ice had melted far enough, an entire chunk of ice fell down the freshly created hole with a loud thunk. Zipper raised his head, trying to track where the ice chunk had landed. From what Fanged could see, she thought the ice had landed a long way down. On closer inspection, the melted ice had revealed a passageway. She gathered up Zipper, making sure that the Faeron clung securely to her shirt as she approached the new opening. She was cautious and for a moment, deeply regretted not bringing a flashlight with her. Then she remembered she still had her makeshift torch and decided to bring that with. She was a little wary about burning herself on her homemade choice, but the benefit of light heavily outweighed the risks. Zipper shifted nervously as she approached the opening. From this angle, she could see a ladder before her.

The sight of the ladder was both thrilling and anxiety inducing. Fanged liked the rush of danger, but she had lost her mojo lately and her confidence had been long shaken. Zipper clung on tightly as Fanged approached the opening. She couldn’t see how far down the ladder went, but she didn’t let that deter her from climbing onto it. She sucked in a deep breath. The ladder remained firm as she placed her weight on it. Zipper peered down into the abyss, a gleam of excitement twinkling in his eyes. Fanged could relate to that hunger for danger. Even though the Faeron was tiny and still a baby, she recognized that he was tougher than he looked. Once he was grown up, maybe he’d even be up for some battling. Fanged had yet to battle with her pets, but she knew that some of them enjoyed the sport of fighting.

She wondered if Zipper had been impacted by growing up in Zoological Imports. From what she could tell, the store was rather chaotic. It kind of had to be considering the type of creatures that it housed. Zipper seemed mostly content and she liked to think he was growing attached to her. Perhaps it was better not to worry about those kinds of things. There wasn’t much else to think about as she descended down the ladder. She half hoped that she would find some reward at the bottom, but she suspected there would simply be an exit to the room that she was currently in. When her feet finally reached solid ground once again, only then could she breathe properly. Unfortunately, there was no treasure to be found here. The only thing that awaited her was a solid, wooden door. She placed her palms against it before pushing it open.

Thankfully the door was easy to maneuver open. A lot of the time the mansion liked to throw locked doors at her, but this time she had gotten lucky. She felt the thrumming magic of the crystal in her backpack. It was a never-ending distraction and she would be glad when she could return home and place it with the others. Zipper crawled down her arm and perched on her fingers. The Faeron was so light that she scarcely noticed him as he moved.
“Do you think we should try to find the exit and take a break?” she asked him in a soft tone.
She’d had enough excitement from the mansion for this month. She’d make sure to come back next month and do some proper exploration. Perhaps she would come back with Zipper and another companion. She had yet to introduce him to anyone else in her kennel.
