August Now that it was August, Fanged had decided to take Zipper back to the mansion. Walking down the path to the mansion, she realized that she had the distinct feeling that she was being followed. Zipper was the first to realize precisely where their tagalong was located. Fanged felt her heart pounding as she tried to figure out who or what was following them. A shape emerged from the shadows and she was quick to recognize the canine face of a Vulticus. This one was more fox-like than the others, indicating that it was closely aligned with the Vulpine breed. However, it’s colours were incorrect to be purely bred. This must have been an offspring. “Find us interesting, do you?” she voiced the question aloud. The Vulticus gave no verbal reply, but Fanged could spot an unusual spark of intelligence in his eyes. She felt curiosity fill her core like an old friend. Surely such a refined fellow had to have an owner? His ruffled fur and skinny frame appeared to indicate otherwise. Fanged carried some treats on her in case a training opportunity arose and she was quick to take some out. Zipper nosed at her bag, trying to climb inside. Fanged quickly shooed Zipper away from the bag while she shut it. Treats might not necessarily be super nutritious, but the Vulticus clearly needed some nourishment even if it wasn’t a proper meal. He pricked his ears forward as he heard the sound of her opening the treats. She crouched down and held one out in offering. The Vulticus took a tentative step forward, not quite trusting, but very interested in the food. Fanged felt her heart melt when the creature finally plucked up the will to take the food from her outstretched fingers.
“Good boy,” Fanged soothed him as he took the treat.
The Vulticus relaxed considerably once he had some food in him. Zipper watched him with wide eyes as he ate. When he settled, the Faeron was very eager to keep this new companion around. Fanged agreed with him in this instance. The fox like Vulticus was clearly having a rough time living out here on his own. Fanged decided the best course of action to take would be to try and coax the Vulticus to follow, but allow him to remain at a distance that was comfortable for him. She took a step beyond him and peered backwards.

The Vulticus tentatively followed her. Fanged couldn’t tell if it was out of curiosity or a fear of being left alone again. Either way, she was pleased with the development. Zipper seemed excited as well. He waved excitedly at the small Vulticus, suddenly happy that he would be able to show a new friend the excitement of the mansion. Fanged moved up the front steps of the mansion. Zipper once again clung to her, though he kept a close eye to ensure that his new friend was still following them. When Fanged reached the front door she stepped through and held it open for the Vulticus to join them if he chose to.
To her delight, the Vulticus decided to take its chances with her and entered the mansion as well. She subtly thought through names in her head before quickly settling on Reynard. All creatures needed a name and Reynard suited this one. With that decided, Fanged chose to look around the room that she had entered. The vibes she was getting were calmer than the mansion had been last month. She was once again on a beach like setting, but the water had receded and waves lapped lazily at the sand in the distance.

Zipper tilted his head as he observed all the sights to be found within the enclosed space. For a closed off room, it was surprisingly spacious. Fanged peered upwards. She was a bit surprised that the ceiling was rather close to them. It was painted a bright, sky blue to match the beach theme of the room. She found herself relaxing in the rather mundane room. It was a nice change of pace and it allowed her new Vulticus companion to get used to her and Zipper. She observed him as he kept his head low, sniffing tentatively at the sand.
The Vulticus seemed like he was the quiet, contemplative type. She tried to keep a similar energy to his to keep him comfortable. He seemed like he’d be too skittish if she made a loud noise or moved too quickly. Zipper was small enough to not be too much of a bother, even if he did decide to approach the creature. For now, Fanged decided to let him do his own thing. If he wanted attention, he could approach her in his own time. She squinted in the bright light as she scanned the length of the room around her.

The room might have been uninteresting on first glance, but Fanged was wiser to the mansion’s tricks than an average person would be. There were strange indents in the sand, as though something heavy had been placed there and then moved recently. Her curiosity was immediately piqued. She made a beeline for the strange area with Zipper clinging to her shoulder. The newly dubbed Reynard lifted his head. He observed her with a watchful eye, curious to see what the woman was going to do about the markings in the sand. After all, they hadn’t gone unnoticed to his keen intelligence.
Fanged paced around in a circle as she tried to distinguish any discernable pattern in the sand markings. Zipper quickly grew bored of what she was doing and removed himself from his perch on her shoulder. Instead, he decided that he would take the time to try and convince Reynard to play with him. The Vulticus observed him the interest. He didn’t mind the small critter. It was too young to be much of a threat yet and it seemed more friendly than vicious. He could put up with its youthful rambunctiousness as long as he wasn’t in a mood that was too annoyed.

September The mansion was quick to tick over into the next month and Fanged found that she was less unsettled by the changing scenery than she had been the last few times this had happened to her. With the change in scenery, also came a change in season. Immediately, she could feel the cold bite of fall nipping at her heels. Even if this wasn’t reflective of the actual weather outside, the air was certainly considerably colder. Zipper seemed a bit more active now that the weather was cooler. He left his perch on her shoulder, instead opting to explore around the room with Reynard. Fanged was pleased with this development. Every baby needed to learn independence at some point. Reynard was thankfully patient with his new charge. He might not have known them very long, but he appeared to be growing fond of the strange pair. Fanged decided to let them do their own thing while she headed into the half of the room that was situated away from them. The room was smaller than the ones from last month. Its four walls were mushed closely together, giving an almost claustrophobic feeling to the room. It didn’t help that a lit fireplace was pressed against the far wall. Fanged wasn’t one to normally be fearful of fire, but a fireplace in such a small place seemed like a bad idea. She regarded it with alertness, even if it appeared benign for now. Reynard sniffed eagerly at a small crack in the floorboards. On closer inspection, it was evident that the crack was large enough to fit a small rodent. Fanged hid a smile as she left Reynard to his own devices. If the Vulticus wanted to hunt, she wasn’t about to stop him. Zipper decided that he was going to help Reynard. He settled down on the ground next to the crack in the flooring.
Fanged felt a sense of calmness as she observed the rest of the room. It certainly had a homey atmosphere to it. The room was almost too normal, even if it was small. She narrowed her gaze. Rooms that looked normal usually had the darkest secrets.

Reynard waited patiently, trying to flush out his prey with the help of Zipper. Fanged decided that while they waited, she would try and solve the mystery of the room. The walls were made of wooden paneling which was unnerving with the fire so close by. The guard in front of the fireplace didn’t seem particularly secure. She would need to watch it closely. The wooden panels of the wall appeared as if they could be pried apart to reveal the secrets within. She decided to test that theory. A wooden chair was easy enough to grab and would give her enough height to reach the first panel that had caught her eye.
“You guys keep doing you,” she instructed Reynard and Zipper as she dragged the chair closer to the wall.
She swung herself up, wobbling slightly as it became evident that one of the chair legs was shorter than the others. Zipper raised his head at the sound of the tipping chair. He contemplated for a moment before deciding to stick with Reynard but keep his attention focused on Fanged in case the woman needed his help. Fanged placed her hands against the wall to help stabilize the chair.

The additional stability helped to keep Fanged’s balance on the chair. The wood was simple enough to pry free from the wall. Inside was a hidden compartment that contained a variety of small objects. She pulled out the first thing her fingers grasped. A small, wooden globe was revealed. It spun around on an axis, but Fanged didn’t recognize the map that it depicted. She squinted as she tried to make out the shape of the continents. They seemed like they could have been made from someone’s idea of the world, but their labels were entirely different than any language that she knew.
Reynard scuffled against the floorboards as he tried to scare the rodent out from its hiding hole. Zipper flew up and down to try and help him. The sound momentarily distracted Fanged, but she soon turned her attention back to the small, spinning globe. In the time that she had taken her gaze off of it, the image on the surface had changed. This time, the image was a lot more sinister. The landmarks were split, like someone had cleaved them into tiny pieces. But this hadn’t been done through the natural aspects of continental drift. No, this had been deliberately done to paint a specific image.

The image on the globe appeared threatening. It was abstract, but it appeared to depict the image of a carving knife. It didn’t make much sense in the grand scheme of things and Fanged was left to wonder why it had changed in the first place. The original continents might have been off enough to land themselves in the uncanny valley, but this was a new level of unnerving. She decided to pocket the globe. If it changed again, she wanted to know about it. Reynard made another attempt at scaring the rodent out from the crack in the floor. This time, Zipper stuck his head forward, peering into the crack to see if he could sight the critter.
He reeled back his head quickly and signaled at Reynard that the critter was indeed still inside. Sighing to herself, Fanged moved closer and decided to help them out in their endeavor. She quickly buried her hand in the sleeve of her hoodie. If the critter was the type to bite, she didn’t want it to catch her skin. She crawled over to Reynard and quickly placed her covered hand into the crack within the floorboards. The small rodent was quickly scared out into the open.

January Fanged did not purposefully have much contact with the entity known as The Labs. She had broken her resolve a few times in the name of investigation. This time, she had ordered a custom creature from an organization that appeared to be an offshoot of the organization. She had a few creatures that would follow the custom designator, but this had been the first time she had initiated obtaining one of her own design. Clover, as she was newly named, had turned out precisely like the image that Fanged had in her head, almost alarmingly so. But so far, the modified Gallor hadn’t given her any issues. In fact, the creature had been programmed to have a disposition towards liking her. Now, she would test to see how Clover responded to an outside environment. It felt a bit strange to take such a large pet to the mansion, but she suspected the magic would adapt. (Clover 0 1/5, 7 1/5) (Black Bones Hunt 1) 1

Getting Clover through the door wasn’t as difficult as she expected it would be. The door appeared to shift around the Gallor’s form in order to accommodate her size. The creature paid little attention to the door as it contorted around her. Fanged felt a bit nervous as she entered the door while following Clover. The inside of the mansion was dark and gothic. The ceiling stretched high above their heads, covered in a dark paint that mimicked the night sky. One might expect stars, but this sky was eerily blank. If she squinted, she saw the barest of specks that might have been the ghost of stars, though their echo was faint. Clover stood still for a moment as she observed the new area. The Gallor didn’t have much experience in the real world and her new surroundings were rather intriguing. She watched her surroundings silently, glancing at Fanged to see her reaction as well.
