Alerios drooped its head and panted, trying to catch its breath. It expended much more energy in its attempts to hold in and radiate that inner cold energy than expected. Letting that energy build quickly and escape in a wintery breath was much easier. Capturing and growing it within was proving difficult in comparison. [Take it easy, Alé. Recover yourself, then we will try again, Xentus cooed to the beast mentally, [Here, eat]. A few scraps of meat were offered up and gladly accepted one by one. Then the wiurn slumped down to the ground to better rest and recover. For a first attempt, it did well - and Xentus told it as much. With some practice, it would hopefully be more efficient at using its energy like this while also retaining enough to stay in a fight. It definitely wasn't a counter that they could rely on more than once, otherwise the wiurn would be entirely too spent.

This freezing technique was their only trump card should they face a particularly difficult opponent to best.. Otherwise, the main strategy the leopard was hoping to utilize was in the form of raw power. But, there was no telling what kind of opponents would be entered for this tournament and so they needed to be prepared for anything. Alerios was allowed to rest while the leopard watched over the beast while immersed in his own thoughts. About half an hour passed before Alerios groggily roused from its slumber. It stretched and yawned deeply, then took a look over at its keeper. Xentus had occupied himself with writing in his journal and was ready to resume this lesson if the wiurn was. [Ready to try again, Alé?], he asked as he stood up from his spot against the tree. The wiurn sent a shake down the the length of its neck and down its tail as it rose to its feet, ready as it could be.

[Alright, Alerios. Let's do it again, become cold], the man instructed mentally, then commanded, "Freeze, Alerios!" He again placed his hand against the wiurn's chest scales, hoping to have a contest of endurance. Being fed, rested, and revitalized, the wiurn got straight to lowering its temperature. It breathed in slowly and deeply this time, charging up its innate frigid energy. Xentus was already feeling the effects of that icy energy being expelled and radiated through the beast's core. With those first couple of rounds for practice, Alerios seemed to be better able to cool down quickly. It knew how to focus its energy a bit better. And the refreshing nap helped too. The leopard did his best to endure against the freezing chill, but had to withdraw this time. "Good freeze, Alé!", the mammalian praised, clutching his frosted hand. With that, the beast relaxed, letting the focused cold energy slowly dissipate now.

Its body stayed cold, but would start warming up since it wasn't focusing on keeping that cold anymore. Xentus noticed as much, and realized this chilling effect would likely last for a short while after the initial temperature drop, allowing the beast to keep a temporary cold aura. Interesting.. That shifted his idea for this lesson slightly - they only needed to aim at getting as cold as possible in a quick burst, rather than chilling and maintaining it. A little less taxing on the wiurn for just as much reward. And the next step from here was expanding that cold aura beyond just its scales. The water bottle came into play, placed on the ground a few feet away from the beast. Alerios wasn't nearly as tired as before, though its head did droop slightly. [Have it in you to try again, Alé?], the man asked, looking over the furred reptile. It needed a moment to shake off the slight exhaustion, but was soon ready to begin again.

[This time, focus on not only becoming cold, but also radiating that energy beyond yourself], Xentus instructed, gesturing toward the water bottle, [Make that water cold]. It was unlikely that the wiurn would be powerful enough to outright freeze something beyond itself with this method, but it would hopefully make any attacker slow down or even be repelled from being so close to such frigid cold. "Freeze!", the leopard commandd. Alerios seemed to understand the concept and focused on its internal cold energy. It breathed in deeply, slowly, churning its innate elemental power to build up in its core. Already being slightly warmed up (or rather, cooled down), it was easy enough for the wiurn to cool itself down to the point it had before. Then, it continued, focusing and expanding this cold further. Frost condensed on its scales, coating the wiurn's entire body as it dropped its temperature more and more.

Alerios continued to channel this energy, seething with this silent, raw power. It focused on shrouding itself with this frigid aura, expanding this frosty energy beyond itself. To reach its target. Once Xentus saw bits of frost collect on the water bottle, he called the wiurn to stop before it expended too much energy entirely. The residual cold would continue to do its work, the wiurn just needed to reach that point first. Even from where he stood a few feet away, there was a distinct chill in the air. "Yes, good freeze, Alerios!", the man praised excitedly, [You do so well, Alé! Ah, but are you alright?]. The wiurn's head drooped and it seemed a little unsteady on its feet after that draining task, but it looked toward the leopard proudly to show it could hold up. Xentus was satisfied with their efforts, feeling confident in their training. [That's enough for today. Let us get some rest now].

> Xentus, accompanied by... Well, he figured he'd get into this sarane thing sooner or later. Now that he was more comfortable with training creatures for combat, he felt that he could tackle the challenge of raising territorial battle-dragons. The frequent pit events of sarane battles was a great means of gathering insight on the dragons. It was a good a time as any to get his small nest of 'teenage' whelps and a foster brood mother ready to participate in such events. The adult hen was his choice to start with. Not nearly aggressive as a drake, yet plenty dangerous. "En'Lian", he called to the beast chained to a thick oak tree, "Xentus is looking forward to working with you, En'Lian." The plump brown hen snarled at the man, upset to have been dragged out here for whatever reason. His words alone wouldn't reach her.. Nothing a few chunks of meaty treats wouldn't solve though.

Fresh chicken was on the menu today. Xentus took a moment to rifle through the cooler; fetching himself a couple of drumsticks and wings before trying to address the hen again. He knew he should've started with some bribery, but he figured he'd test where his standings were with the sarane. As expected though, they weren't very high - until the faint scent of raw chicken wafted through the air. "Ah, this one has your attention now eh, En'Lian?", he chuckled as he returned to his spot before the dragon, "Be good and you'll be fed, En'Lian." The hen was still snarling at his words, but as its eyes flicked between the chicken and the leopard's, it seemed to sink in that aggression toward the food-giver might make him less willing to give food. The fang-bearing quelled for now - though the beast still looked plenty ready to snap at him should he misstep.

"That's it, good En'Lian", the man gently praised to the upset hen. A wing was tossed in her direction and the next sound he heard was the crunch of bones. The sarane beared down on the morsel while staring hard at the leopard, as if giving a warning as to what would happen to him should he tempt fate. It would wake some time to break the ice between them, but he was feeling good about this. He sat on the grass and cooed at the dragon while it ate. "En'Lian is an energetic one, hm? This one hopes to put that to use, En'Lian", he babbled, putting emphasis on the hen's name in hopes it would catch on. The sarane loudly chomped down its treat, glaring at the leopard all the while. He was a noisy food-giver. But since he had more, it decided it was worth putting up with the noise if it meant more food.

It would take some time before the hen was less guarded with him. He knew hens were supposed to be nicer than drakes, but 'nice' was a relative term here.. But he wasn't dissuaded. The ever patient leopard sat calmly and watched over the sarane while it ate, taking some time to scribble down some notes in his journal as well. The dragon stared at him for a short time while eating, but as the noisy words stopped, the beast grew disinterested. It placed its head on its front legs and tried to doze. "En'Lian", the leopard sweetly called moments before it could drift off. A yellow eye shot open and a hiss began to bubble in the dragon's throat. But it was instantly quelled by the chicken leg that flew through the air toward its jaws. "That's it, good En'Lian!", Xentus praised over the sound of loudly crunching bones.

The hen grumbled as its treat was gulped down, staring at the mammalian with narrowed eyes. He had some audacity to interrupt the onset of sleep like that. But Xentus knew exactly what he was doing. Probably. At least, he knew he didn't want to try to prod a sleeping sarane awake just to continue their little picnic together. Preventing sleep altogether was hopefully the wiser option. Even if the dragon seemed rather upset with him at the moment. "En'Lian will get a chance to sleep soon, this one assures", he tried telling the beast gently, "Bear with Xentus, En'Lian." Those cold yellow eyes stared even harder. He had the hen's attention. And anger. And while the crunchy meaty treats were staving off any thoughts the hen had to lash out at the man, there was no telling how long this would work. "Easy there, En'Lian", the man cooed as soothingly as he could.

For once, he was almost at a loss on how to proceed from here. Handling aggressive species wasn't something he had much experience with. There weren't really any in his personal menagerie that ever tried to attack him, come to think of it. The most aggressive animal he had (aside from sarane) was probably the wiurn, and they were generally reserved beasts as long as they had their space. The sarane were more distrustful and aggressive. He'd refrained from interacting with them much until he was ready. And even now.. He wasn't sure if he was. But he was thankful that he chose a hen as his starting point. The younger drakes would be quite a handful, and he didn't look forward to breaking them when they grew up. A grown hen, on the other hand, would be a much better introduction to the general behavior and mannerisms of the species.

As with anything he did, this was a learning experience. And a test. To test the limits of the sarane, to test his own willingness to tame such beasts. En'Lian wasn't looking to see him any more favorably any time soon. Even with the gifts of food he gave. With time and patience, he was certain he'd temper that aggression. Just how much time was needed was a different story. The mosca he'd adopted for the previous tournament was a good example of what he thought to expect. It was a creature that didn't like his company, one that needed to see him from young eyes before it would accept him as someone worth its time in age.. It was a strange process. As for how he predicted the progress going with the hen, he thought it might take them a good few days to acclimate to one another before they could begin proper teachings.

Today was a day of introduction and relax some nerves. He didn't suspect that he'd get to teach the hen anything much. Not that his training plan was very intensive to begin with. He wanted to get her to use her claws and to stand on her own against a drake. That's all she'd need to be successful in the gauntlet. The plan was a simple one - and one he hoped to repeat with all his other sarane if it went well. The man mused on this plan of his while eyeing the hen before him. It stared back with an intensity only a sarane could have. He did his best to not be unnerved by the glare, giving the creature a gentle smile to show he wasn't an enemy. Of course, it didn't work. Being gentle and unassuming wasn't working nearly as easily as he would've liked, but it was much better than the alternative of having a heavy hand.

That note got him to thinking.. What if he needed to have a heavy hand here? To work with a firm touch. A violent one, even. A frown replaced his smile. He'd seen those breaking their drakes and large-winged hens use magic and weaponry to hasten the process. That idea didn't sit well with him.. But considering that the sarane were a species all about having dominance, perhaps he'd need to learn to be less gentle. The dragons were a hardy sort anyway. They were designed to fight, tooth and claw, until one stood above all else. Xentus sighed. He couldn't cast aside the idea that a bit of tough love might be needed. En'Lian would prove to him what method of teaching worked the best. As for drake-breaking.. He'd need to consider what he could do to make the process as quick and easy as possible - for both parties.
