While it was not the first time Nerius had visited the Breeding Center with critters in tow, it was the first time he'd attempted it with this particular species. Lotine, at least when it came to transportation, were already more challenging than pachee. While the latter were small enough to easily be put in carrier, the much larger creature needed to be transported in a small pull wagon. His ever helpful TROD had been responsible for actually getting the creature to the center, but had quickly left, leaving Nerius to handle the rest.
It was heavier than he would have liked, but at least didn't have far to go. He first had to fill out a bit of paperwork (should have kept the TROD here long enough to do that), and the lotine, Kasuna, was giving him the stink eye while he did. She hadn't been happy about being taken out of her pond, and dragged (literally) to this strange location.

The paperwork didn't take too long, perhaps because there was only one 'parent', and once he'd returned that to the receptionist, Nerius dragged the wagon to the assigned room. It wasn't the easiest thing to do, and he was glad he'd decided against including water in the transport. Kasuna might have preferred that, but lotine could survive out of water just fine, and she'd soon be back in it anyway.
Because, sure enough, the main feature of the assigned room was a natural looking pool. Once he was sure the door was shut properly, Nerius opened the crate, which had been secured to the wagon. The lotine was surprisingly quick for a more water dwelling creature, and happily slipped into the pool with only a slight splash. Nerius rather expected that would happen, Kasuna was much more comfortable in the water, plus lotine were rather shy creatures to begun with, and this one wasn't very used to him.

He wasn't a complete stranger, Nerius had spent enough time working in the garden that she'd seen him fairly often, but he'd never specifically worked with Kasuna. He'd finally been inspired to now after, while relocating his garden pets, he'd noticed her flower was looking different. A little bit of research later, he'd remembered that was how breeding worked for the species, if that term was even accurate. There was no male or pollen involved, they just, made berries. It was a bit odd, and he didn't really understand how it worked. He hadn't ever noticed her flower doing this before, it was possible the onset of spring triggered something, though they were supposedly able to produce all year.
For now though, she didn't seem interested in producing anything, and her entire body was submerged under the water. It was clean, and not very deep, so she wasn't really hidden, and Nerius could still see her general shape.

It probably would have been better to get the lotine more used to him before attempting this, but she seemed ready to produce a berry soon, and it was too late to change that. What would happen if she hadn't been brought to the Breeding Center, he wondered? The previous owner had clearly ignored their garden patch for most the year, Nerius would be surprised if a berry hadn't formed during all that time. Lola could float, maybe they'd just.. floated away out of the garden? Then again, there were a pair of lola that hung around the garden, maybe that was where they'd come from.
But Nerius was going to do this properly, which had meant this little trip to the center, and now for the more difficult task of getting the lotine to warm up to him. Really, the difficulty came from her unhappiness about the travel, and Kasuna was still lurking on the bottom of the pool, and didn't look like she wanted to come up any time soon.

Thankfully, Nerius had a plan, and that plan involved food bribes. He'd picked of a breeding colony of feeder fish during his last trip to Nature's Bounty, and had scooped out a few to bring along. They were currently in a cooler, he'd brought them himself, while the TROD had wrangled the lotine. He'd sprung for the good ones too, and hopefully they'd be to Kasuna's liking, they were apparently good for berry production as well. They were supposedly magical, which seemed like a strange thing to infuse with magic if you asked him, but sure enough, they had a faint magical aura.
Sitting down next to the pool, Nerius picked one of the fish up out of the cooler, and gently tossed it into the pool. He could instantly see a reaction, the lotine startled a bit at first, but quickly realized what had landed in the pool was food, and after a moment of staring at it, delicately snapped it up.

That was a good sign, Nerius didn't really have a back up plan if she hadn't liked the fish, but clearly that wouldn't be an issue. Kasuna, having eaten the first (they were small) was now more actively swimming around, presumably searching for more. She didn't look interested in coming to the surface yet, so Nerius splashed the first one at the surface of the pool, before dropping it in. The lotine quickly spotted it, and quickly snatched it up, barely letting it leave his hand.
He actually wondered if the fish were important for the breeding somehow. Yes, he knew they were beneficial, but did they have some kind of nutrients that the lotine actually needed to produce a healthy berry? That could explain why all the lotine people kept in the gardens weren't constantly creating new lola, leading to an infestation of the little critters. Then again, everything he'd read stated the fish weren't required.

Lab critters were weird, and though he had purchased (and read) a book on plant creatures recently, it was more of an overview of all the different species, rather than going into specific details on any one. He'd have to do some more researching at some point, but for now he needed to get Kasuna to warm up to him.
He had plenty more fish though, and splashed another one on the surface, before pulling it up out of the water. The lotine noticed the splashing immediately, but by the time she got over to it, the fish was gone. It wasn't anywhere under the water that she could see, and after a few seconds, poked her head up out of the water. She easily spotted Nerius, and the fish he was holding, and just stared at him. She wasn't surprised by his presence, he'd been the one to open the crate and let her into the water.

"You want the nice fish, don't you," he gently spoke to the lotine, slowly offering the fish out. She continued to stare at him for a few more seconds, before swimming over, grabbing the fish out of his hand, then going back down under the water. It was a step forward, at least, and Nerius picked up another fish, waiting a bit to see if she would poke her head up out of the water without any further coaxing.
It took a few moments, but Kasuna did return to the surface on her own, looking for more fish of course, and could see the one in his hand. This time she was less hesitant to swim over to him, though she did dive back under the water after taking the fish. She wasn't trying to flee, and was still close by, perhaps she just preferred to eat the fish while under the water.

She wanted another fish as well, and popped right back up after finishing the one she had. In his experience, food was an excellent way to make friends, at least with creatures. Probably with humanoids too, Nerius would certainly like someone much better if they bought him a nice lunch. And while raw fish wasn't his idea of a good lunch (well, sushi was a thing), it did appeal to the lotine, and he held out another fish.
Kasuna took it from his hand again, but this time stayed near the surface, to his surprise. This was good, though there was no guarantee she wouldn't dive back down under the water if he tried to touch. He was running low at this point, having not done this before it was a total guess on how much he'd need, but Nerius offered out another fish and let the lotine take it, but this time left his hand near the water.

He hadn't been planning on trying to pet the lotine yet, but to his surprise she booped her snout up against his hand, presumably looking for more fish. That might make things easier than he'd expected, and Nerius gave her another fish, picking it up in his other hand. This also gave him the opportunity to get another look at her flower. It had already opened more than when he'd last checked, and he could actually see a bit of color within. That had to be the berry, and it looked to be just about ready to harvest.
Kasuna seemed to be warming up to him a little, or at least getting comfortable around him. Also probably still looking for food. He was down to the last fish though, and Nerius handed over the final treat, still keeping an eye on the flower. Hopefully she'd still stick around the surface, even if he was now out of fish.
