Lethalia had never been so afraid of doing something wrong in her entire life. Maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but few things had ever seemed so fragile as this houluh pup nested in her arms. The satyr sat cross-legged on her front lawn, having shooed off the curious gallery of critters that had come to sniff out the newcomer. She didn't need all of them around just right now. Once she'd gotten home with the pup, the realization finally set in; she had never trained a tiny delicate thing like this before. She had a vulti and rakai, but those came to her as full fledged adults. The only babies she'd dealt with were of the sarane variety, and they had enough sharp ends to them to make up for their size. While this pup had pointy milk-teeth, she had no claws to speak of, and only twitched and whimpered when the satyr stoked her soft fur, instead of snapping and hissing at her like a hatchling would. It had been some time since she trained something that didn't resemble a reptile, she came to realize. Ever since Vidarr, it felt like her world had been immersed in their bloody games of dominance, unable to surface until recently since the 'dragons' calmed down and lost interest in making more eggs. Some time ago she realized it was likely unhealthy for her, but what was she to do with so many wee future berserkers when she needed to bond with all of them before they were uncontrollable, adult berserkers? This pup was likely forcing her into the break from the blood and thunder, even if it wasn't entirely planned. It would be nice to focus on something entirely 'other' for some time, longer than just breeding orbaru for an hour or sneaking off for a few moments to smoke. "So sweet, Goldie," she murmured, testing how the name felt rolling off the tongue. Naming creatures was so hard, especially as special as it felt the houluh's name needed to be. Foresters' Treasury of the Woods. Was it too much? Was it too tacky? It felt like such a grand name to give to such a minuscule warm bundle. It was how conventions went with these hounds and kennels, but it was one of those things that were so formal-feeling it made her uncomfortable. Well, at least Gold's name was better than the adolescent houluh running around she still referred to as 'Boy'. Gold gave a squirm to let the satyr know she was awake, a small whine and straining towards the light in the gap of her blanket. Remembering that puppies were indeed not all like sarane, Lethalia belatedly set her pup's swaddle down in her lap. Early spring still nipped a little, but she didn't have to worry about a mammal catching a chill nearly as much as the hatchlings could. Still, it felt strange to settle the nest of blankets on her crossed legs gingerly unfolding it so Gold could stick that tiny nose out, twitching furiously at all of the new smells to be found at the farm. "Hullo girl, my Gold," she repeated softly, still feeling out the girlpup's name. At least, she was fairly certain this one would be a matronne, but with her unfamiliarity with them she couldn't be too sure. Either way wouldn't hurt her feelings. name|2

It felt strange to be so attached already, but it was rather the point of 'man's best friend', was it not? Even more than creatures of the labs could engineer companions, nothing could compare to the deep-seated connection that dogs had to their masters. Though never big into researching that sort of thing, even Lethalia knew the jist of it. Wild canines brought to live with the humanoids of Pethia, changing after centuries to adapt to life with two-legged companionship, eventually to become an innate part of one another. To say it was 'in their blood' would be understating things, but somehow Lethalia had never owned a dog in her life. Vulticus didn't seem like they counted. Gold was still fairly leery of the satyr, casting a sidelong glance at the woman saying "Hey, Gold," while still safely bundled in a blanket cave. Yet, there was something about that strange primordial connection she had with humans - the pup had to wag her tail nervously at the sound of the woman's voice, completely on it's own accord. name|3

"Yeahhh, there's m'sweet girlpup! Y'know your name, huh Gold?" Lethalia continued her fussing in hushed cheery tones, a tiny secretive smile gracing her lips while the pup got more and more happily worked up by her voice. Obviously she knew Gold couldn't know her name just yet, but her bright squeaky tones and the same word being repeated a handful of times was getting the houluh excited. The blanket continued to move and twitch with that tail thumping against it, rustling as the pup's legs twitched in that puppy-way of not knowing what to do with all of the energy being reeled up inside of her with her human's charming noises. The pup practically had no choice but to get the source! Unsure of what else to do and getting especially too wriggly to be contained any longer, the pup when flying out of her warm cave to make a feint at the satyrs face. "Yeah Gold!" she praised with a racious laugh, dodging the flailing milk teeth that popped out of the blanket at her. "There'sa brave girl Gold!"Gold lv|1 ly|2 name|4

It was a good little lunge that finally sent Gold out of the blanket, landing in a heap back on the satyr's lap. Perhaps it was something she could teach the pup to do on command sometime when she had grown a little more robust than she was now. To see how a creature new to her would grow was going to be a delight, especially to see if she had the right wits about her to be a help around the farm. All in good time. For now, she was just a flaily little tiny thing. Gold set her chin on her paws with those ridiculously long ears askew all over the place, tail still thumping against the blanket. Lethalia found herself grinning at the baby behavior, even unsure as she was about domestic dog mannerisms. Whatzit, Gold?" she prompted lightly, since the pup didn't seem distressed or anything like that. More wigging and the pup growled just a tiny bit, her tail going harder; was she beginning to recognize her own name? name|5

"Really now?" Lethalia asked, unsure of what to make of the most minute growl she'd ever heard. Whether lizards or dogs, apparently she'd never stop being chatty with her pets, especially if they were responding to her. "Huh, Goldie?" At the repetition of her name, Gold hopped up and gave her owner a little woof, rolling into a growl before yipping again. "Thereee's a Goooold giiirl!" The satyr literally couldn't help herself. Why hadn't she done this years ago? It was charming to have a creature that was so reactive to her voice alone, uncanny that the houluh's eyes hadn't left hers since emerging from her blanket cave. Another bark ended in a howl that had so little capacity behind it, it wavered for only moments before Gold had to refresh her breath for another, spurred on by the lit of the satyr's voice. It sounded a little like whining or howling, and the pup needed to get in on that herself! name|6

"Okay, okay," Lethalia laughed in a more neutral tone, grinning to herself. "Calm down, Goldpup. We're fine, noisy little bugger." Didn't want to get the puppy too worked up now, even if the way she threw her head back for those tiny howls was just one of the best things ever. Even if it was strange to work with a more domesticated species than she was accustomed to; they made quite a lot more nose than wildlings would, less versed in the ways of the world to feel the need to hide themselves. Houluh and other dogs seemed to be smart in this way, to tie themselves to one of the most dominant predators around. She still lacked an entire plan on what to do with Gold, but ideas would come with time when she figured out her personality more than just an excitable puppy. Lethalia didn't expect to be keeping entirely many of the hounds, so her plans with each would be all the more important. name|7

Gold seemed to quiet herself in the absence of her owner howling along with her, and eventually calmed enough to focus less on the human and more on the fact that she was in a vast yard. First sniffing and sampling the air, and then draping herself over Lethalia's leg to mouth at the blades of grass, contemplating the ground for a long while before flopping herself out of her warm spot. Of course, she would instantly come across one of the only things in the yard the Satyr didn't want to deal with right now. Some kind of awful multi-legged centipede winding it's way below the grass, wavering quite fascinatingly for a puppy. "Gold, nooo," Lethalia said gingerly, unwilling to raise her voice at the tiny thing just yet. There was a glance in response to her name, but utter disregard for being told 'no' to something. If the satyr didn't know any better, she might think the pup was intentionally ignoring her. name|8 no|1 name training accepted!

But no. Puppies do what they do, and would absolutely carry on their own whims as it suited them just like any other youngling. At least at this point Lethalaia had raised quite a number of babies between the caravan and the labs; one more shouldn't be all that differently challenging. "No baby," she repeated softy, leaning over to scoop the curious houluh up to place on her opposite side. Hopefully one without a gross bug. The satyr scooted a bit further away from where Gold had found the thing, just in case. Of all things a puppy could find, it had to be a bug. Couldn't it have been a dead thing or even just poop? Lethalia did not do bugs. Blessings of the short term memory of a puppy meant Gold forgot all about her creepy quarry once it was out of sight. Instead, she turned her attention to grabbing onto the blanket, growling and tugging at the resistance it's weight alone gave against her. Gold lv|2 ly|4 no|2

"There's m' good girl!" It was mostly the absurdly short puppy attention span that was working for her, rather than Gold learning any sort of minding her. Either way she was away from the disguising bug, so Lethalia would take whatever wins she could get. Tugging on the blanket Gold had attached herself to brought fourth a new barrage of 'super scary and intimidating' growling, even though she hardly had the decibels of a bumblebee. The little one was still going to try her hardest though, head whipping from side to side as her legs set against the blanket - she would get it away from her owner yet! Just as quickly as the game had come on, Goldie decided she was done with it, unceremoniously dropping her blanket corner to trot off with her tail held high. She could let the blanket win this round. "Gold," Lethalia warned, her tone lowering to a growl that would hopefully have effect on the pup. "No, leave it alone!" Where else would she have gone to with such certainty, other than back to her bug friend? no|3

Soon as the harsher tone reached Gold's ears her once-wagging tail tucked to match her flinch, hunkering down to avoid the ire of the large humanoid creature. Gold wasn't sure yet if this was new-mom or what, but that was a pretty scary noise coming out of something a lot bigger than she was. Lethalia stalled out as she took in the cowering puppy, trying to wrap her head around what had just happened. All of this, just from telling her off? She hadn't even been upset or really raising her voice, but getting snapped at was too much for right now. "Well, now y' being a good girl!" she decided to praise, ensuring her tone was adequately lowered this time around. Didn't want to praise the bad behavior or make Gold think she could get away with murder if she looked hurt. But hopefully her timing was right, because though it was a bit dramatic, Gold did stop doing what she was doing. no|4

Good that pups like this rebound quickly, Lethalia discovered. Soon as a kinder voice returned and a hand was held up in apology, the pup's nose was wagging again and she was giving her palm tiny licks. "That's nice, Goldie," she lied, revoking her hand to wipe it off on the blanket in her lap. Eugh, plenty of people taught their pets 'no bites' but did anybody teach them 'no licks?'
Their rebound time was a little jarring to the satyr, who hadn't really owned a creature like a domestic dog before. She'd thought vulticus were similar enough, but the day was bringing her to realize her canine was no wolf. Gold was sensitive and reactive, being so tiny, with the attention span of a goldfish - and not one that would someday turn into a dragon. Her hyping the pup back up with a pitched voice brought the pup to prancing again, howling at her owner a little before her ear twitched from a piece of grass.

The offending blade was quickly nipped off, Gold rolled backwards onto her back and... there she went. Lethalia watched the pup trot off with a dazed smile, soothing to be with something who re-found joy so easily. People certainly had their own kind of freedom, but they'd never be as carefree as a puppy. Being in her own yard, the satyr felt comfortable enough closing her eyes to soak in the sun and cool spring air while Goldie explored, enjoying the quiet after the puppy-drama while she could. Quiet never lasts long enough. An eyelid cracked open just enough to see, of course, no less than Gold approaching a centipede who was already reared up in aggravation. "Gold, no-"Too little too late. A startled yelp sounded and suddenly Gold had returned to the safety of her cover, cowering behind her owner for protection. "Ah. Didn't I tell 'ya that'd happen?" Lethalia asked the pup, whose wide terrified eyes turned on her. "Oh gods. C'mere, even if it's y'own fault," she sighed, resolve already crumbled from those puppy dog eyes. Gold was scooped into her lap and the pile of blankets, safe from any more particularly angry centipedes. Looking the houluh over, she really didn't seem to be all that harmed aside from a tiny nick on an ear. no|5

"Lucky he didn' bite y' poor little pumpkin' nose," she informed as she booped said nose. Goldie seemed a bit too dazed to mind. Though it might be soon forgotten, hopefully a scary buggie bite would make the houluh believe her when she told the pup not to do something. Wishful thinking, especially this young. It would be interesting to see what she grew up to be like, since it was hard to tell how much was her true nature and how much was being a puppy. If she remained adventurous like this, it could indicate some of the trials she was to look forward to in houluh ownership. Soaking in the attention and comfort almost made it seem like Gold was just going to fall asleep in her lap, but the houluh stubbornly warded off sleep. She nipped at Lethalia's fingers, gnawed at the blanket, threw her head up to the sky to watch Vidarr fly by. Anything to not nod off. Naturally, her blue eyes settled on a beetle crawling up a nearby blade of grass, and readied herself to lunge for it. "No please," Lethalia asked mildly, wondering how much the pup had caught on. Gold's ear cocked, and it looked for a moment that she was still going to try and nab the bug right off the branch. A moment longer, and her injured ear twitched a little - and Gold settled back down into her owner's lap. "There we are! G'girl!" the satyr praised lavishly, not expecting the little lick she was going to get to her chin for working the pup back up. That was going to take some getting used to.
