Fiera had only been here five minutes and she was already regretting it. It was blazing hot today, the sun pounding down overhead, which wouldn't normally be a problem. She was at the river bank after all, walking down an area with steep, canyon-like walls to either side (though with thankfully enough room for the humanish to walk alongside the stream itself with little issue.). This meant that the wind was pushed into such a small space that it whipped through the tunnel with verve, cooling the sweat on the back of Fiera's neck, if giving her a rather... windswept look to her hair. Still, that was all stuff that she could deal with. Cool winds, no rain, all of it was something she could cope with. Her equipment wasn't that heavy either- she had long gotten used to the weight of it on her back as she trudged through the mud. Fiera 1 Serine 7.1/9.1 1

No, the problem the humanish was having was the unfortunate choice of pet she had opted to bring with her. Serine was uncooperative on a good day, that much she knew already. But tilvanders were creatures of the waves, right? So she should have been right at home on the riverbank, and might even help scare some fish into Fiera's nets. That's what the humanish had thought, at least. Not to mention the contest that was coming up. This would help them bond a bit before it started so they would have a more coordinated performance, right? ...Right? Fiera cringed at the mere thought of it. Serine wasn't really the "friendly bonding" type, let alone the "helping you fish" type. She was an incredibly stubborn and stuck up beast, and Fiera had NO idea where she got that behavior from. Really, not a single clue, she thought to herself as she flicked her hair over her shoulder.

She needed to get it cut, but her last stylist had proven absolutely miserable, talking back to Fiera every time she tried to direct their cuts. Honestly, how hard was it to do everything she said? Really. Oh right, Serine. So as it turned out, the hot summer sun was uncomfortable on Serine's back, which she made clear the moment she made it to the banks of the river, crying loudly with her croaking voice as Fiera tried to urge her along so they could at least GET there. That made some sense, considering that Serine was mostly black in coloration, a rare shade for a tilvander to be. So Fiera tried to get her into the water so she could cool down a bit, or even get some mud on her to protect her from the sun if she so desired. A perfectly reasonable idea, right? So she had thought, at least.

But no, Serine had started hesitating the moment Fiera got her onto muddier terrain. Back at home she normally had a mix of smooth pebbles and tile floor to slide around on, so Fiera supposed the texture was different enough to be interesting to the tilvander. But no, as it turned out, "interesting" was not the word to use for it. No, instead Serine had taken a few steps out onto the sandy mudflat and decided she HATED it. The texture, the temperature, all of it. It took everything Fiera had to pull her any closer to the water, and the spotted tilvander strained against the lead every step of the way. Fiera was oh so very sure that if she could just get Serine in the water, the soothing coolness of the liquid would make any doubts she had about the river flow away, and she wouldn't even have to touch the bottom to be upset by the sandy texture.

But no, even that didn't work. Fiera had to get herself ankle deep in the water before she was able to yank Serine into it, and that just upset the tilvander even more. Apparently the water was too cold for her, as she almost immediately leapt out, writhing and whirling while making an ear piercing croaking noise. Fiera nearly had to let go of the leash with the noise she was making, but at least once she was back onto the shore she went back to her "grumpy" countenance instead of her "screeching hellbeast" personality. Fiera could live with just dragging her behind her... she supposed. She didn't think she would be able to catch many fish with Serine doing that however, so she made a mental note to try and find a spot she would be more comfortable with... or at least a spot she would sit still in long enough for the humanish to do some fishing.

Fiera was in a stand-off. With a fish. "Don't... you dare." She said, fishing pole in one hand, her fist clenched in the other as she stared down at the white, thick scaled creature below. He looked at her smugly, his sweet little face revealing no intentional deception, but she knew that evil lurked behind those eyes. She had brought him to the riverside for a day of fun and getting to know each other while she fished, but he had insisted on doing nothing but cause trouble. He hooked himself on her fishing line twice, causing her to have to pin the writhing creature down before he swallowed the sharp metal entirely. Another time he splashed around as much as possible in the water as if trying to intentionally scare away all the fish. And now he had taken to gathering up water in his mouth and squirting it directly at her. Fiera 6 Savitri 0.1/0.1 1

"Do not. Do NOT do it again." Fiera said, the front of her shirt now soaked. She realized a bit of dampness was to be expected when fishing, but having her pet ACTIVELY trying to get her wet was unacceptable. Unfortunately for her, Savitri didn't seem to know this. Her scolding only seemed to further encourage him, as he swam back and forth looking for another good vantage point to squirt at her from. He was remarkably intelligent for a fish (though Fiera had heard that seryn WERE sapient, so perhaps that was to be expected), but it seemed he only wanted to use that intelligent to come up with new ways to get into trouble. Fiera had hoped that taking him out would let him get some of that energy out of his system and, well. It was definitely working, but not in the way she wanted it to.

The humanish narrowly dodged another squirt of water, ducking just in time for it to pass over her head. Savitri seemed a bit bothered by that, diving under the water where she couldn't see him. They were in a narrow pool that branched off of the main river, with a shallow inlet leading in. She would be able to see him if he tried to leave, but the water in the deeper parts of the pool towards the center was too murky for her to be able to keep a close eye on him. He could strike at any place and any time. "...Great." She muttered under her breath before grabbing a towel from the chair she had set up. She tried dabbing at the water that was on her shirt, but the damage was already done. "I'll probably have to bleach this." She said, poking at the streaks of brown from the muddy water.

Of course, a normal person might say "Don't wear a shirt you actually like to an activity you know is going to be filled with mud." and for your efforts Fiera would tell you to mind your own business. As she was trying to dry it off however, she head an almost imperceptible splash behind her, her feline ears twitching towards the sound. Instinctually, she dodged out of the way and the spray of water splashed onto a rock right behind her. "Ha! I bet you thought you had me that time, you little bastard!" She said, and Savitri dove into the water again, clearly irritated. If that was how he wanted to play, Fiera could play right back. She had brought with her a traveling tank- really more of a cooler on wheels with well-baffled water inside it, designed to transport aquatic pets around the city for those who owned them.

It also, most notably, had a LID on it so the creatures it was meant to contain couldn't just jump right back out. If she could catch him out of the pond, then she could stick him back in there for a bit for a time-out. It would give her the chance to move to a better location for fishing- and hopefully one that Savitri would find more entertaining as well so he wouldn't take out his wild energy on her. But that required catching him first, and she doubted he would go down willingly. Still, she had a few tricks up her (now wet) sleeve. Specifically, she brought some fish pellets with her this time. Fiera normally didn't use baits, but she had made some big trades at Curious Collections recently and was trying to get her stock of fish to trade back up to what it was, and that required luring in some extra catches. (Using pellets.) Fiera 10 Savitri 1.0/2.0 5

She sprinkled the pellets over the water. They were meant for baiting regular fish, but they could be of interest to a seryn as well. Even if he didn't eat them, he might still want to see what they were. Then, she held her net at the ready, waiting to scoop him up at the slightest sign of movement at the surface. She waited... and waited... and was finally rewarded. With a squirt of water from below the surface, directly at her face. Fiera swore loudly and Savitri breached the surface of the water in a dramatic jump as if laughing at her. Fiera hissed, her tail puffing up as she fumbled for the towel again, rubbing it on her face. There went her makeup for the day. Her thoughts yanked her in different directions for revenge, trying to figure out a new technique while grappling with her rampant anger.

Not to mention the fact that she was, you know, being actively outsmarted by a fish. That hurt. But clearly, a direct approach wasn't working. She needed to be more subtle... or maybe, to just rub his weaknesses in his face. He could squirt at her, but only so far, and unlike her, he was pretty restricted to the water. For now, at least. Fiera was well aware that some seryn could fly, but luckily he hadn't picked that trait up yet. And she certainly wasn't going to teach it to him until she knew he could behave himself. She also had heard that his particular breed of seryn could breathe fire. She was... going to hold off on teaching that to him too. Possibly forever. For now though, she was simply going to... move her chair. That was all she needed to do, she was pretty sure. Her fishing line was pretty long.

So she simply picked up her chair and catch bucket and moved it up the slope, away from the pond. About fifteen, twenty feet away. Because of the higher vantage point, she could still get her fishing line into the water. So she did. She leaned back in her chair, swiped the fishing rod back, and let it fly, watching the bobber plop into the water with a satisfying 'bloop'. After the first couple times Fiera had to yank his mouth open to get the hook out, she was pretty sure Savitri wouldn't try eating it again. The unpleasantness of her pinning him down and pulling out a sharp, painful thing was more than enough for him to remember not to do that, no matter how pretty it was. Sure enough, he tried to squirt her again... but the stream fell short, landing on the rocks just a few feet ahead of her.

"Oh, good try love!" Fiera said, calling down into the pond. "I'm sure you'll get me next time!" There was an annoyed thrash of his tail in the water (or at least, she was pretty sure that was his tail- he was kind of all fins) and then stillness. Perhaps he was lining up for another squirt, perhaps he was trying to figure something else out. Either way, Fiera was feeling pretty smug about the whole thing. And to her delight, she saw some of the pellets disappearing. It looked like there was a non-seryn fish in the water, getting closer and closer to her hook. She was sure she'd have it in no time. Soon, she could see its shape under the water, drifting closer and closer to her fishing line... until it disappeared under the water, as if yanked down suddenly. "...Uh." Fiera said hesitantly, squinting at the water. Maybe she just spooked it...?
