Gardening Venture #1 > Xentus, accompanied by...
Finally, his garden was established and flourishing. Well.. Maybe just established. His plant-like pets now had a place to call home, now free from the confines of the kennel lot. There was only a few of them, but he had plans to garner himself more. Mussimanders especially. He'd always been curious about those strange mushroom-growing lizards. And especially curious to know how delicious their mushrooms were when sauteed.. They were on the list of creatures of obtain, one day.
But before then, he figured he'd get some plants rooted and growing. This area was overgrown, so there was plenty of work to be done. And to help him, he had the company of one of his three water golems. He figured it was easier than toting a thermos or watering can around - it could simply make water for him when needed. A pretty good idea, he thought, especially considering the summer sun.

The golem walker seemed content enough following him around, linked to him with their shared bond. It was one he still didn't fully understand yet.. It didn't bind their souls, minds, or feelings directly. And yet, somehow the golem could sense his will and desire, then act upon it accordingly. A bond of heart, he took to thinking it. Whatever it was, the connection was one he was hoping to understand further as he spent more time with these curious creatures.
The mammalian's first task was to better establish the perimeter of the area by clearing out any errant vegetation. At the moment, he couldn't quite tell where his garden began and wilderness ended.. As fond as he was of nature, boundaries would be needed to keep the garden residents safe from harm. With golem trailing after him, the leopard toed his way over dense overgrowth, placing little flags in the earth where he saw fit.

Eventually, he wanted to put up wrought iron fencing around the perimeter. Something somewhat fanciful. Perhaps with a brick foundation? Cobblestone paths? Ah, there were many options to consider. He knew for certain that he wanted a bridge over the lotine pond and a series of huts for the smaller creatures like bellaroxi. Something like birdhouses. For the ground. The leopard dreamed up his garden as he worked, humming a thoughtful tune as the occasional flag was planted into the earth.
Oh, a zen garden! That was an idea. He wasn't sure how those things didn't get muddied after rain.. Or perhaps they did? Any picture he'd seen of them were always in the most well kept state. A frown curled his lip down, and he took a moment to think about it. The water golem picked up on this change in energy emitted from its master, clicking its shell as if to wonder what was wrong, providing comfort in the only way it knew how to.

"Worry not, little one", the leopard turned and looked down at the walker, alerted by the noise, "This one is merely lost in thought, is all." For once, he didn't feel bad about getting lost in his own mind. If there was any time that being aloof was acceptable, it was whilst tending to a garden. Besides, there was much to consider. He hadn't even thought about the kinds of plants he would grow! It would come later, but the prospect was certainly exciting.
Now, back to thinking and walking. A greenhouse or polytunnel would be a necessary addition. Perhaps a drying cabinet for herbs.. He knew some farms had monorails to help ferry hefty supplies such as fertilizer. It sounded like a lot of work to install, but it would cut some of the effort needed to keep everything prim and proper. Aesthetically displeasing however. Now, hydroponics on the other hand..

The mammalian made it half way around the perimeter before he paused to take a look around. The edge he defined was looking nice - a rounded square. The lotine pond was in the center, and ideally his garden would get split into nine sections or so. There was still much to consider for what he wanted where, what to plant, what creatures to raise.. Ah, thinking of it all at once made it seem much more overwhelming than it actually was. One step at a time, he reminded himself. He'd already had a good start going. Stopping for a brief break to replenish some energy, then it was back to work. Xentus turned his attention to the water golem, kneeling down before it. His thoughts were centered around water, his thirst..
"Pour water", he asked of it, imposing his will on the creature. It wasn't trained exactly, but it responded to the signals he gave off - opening a pore on its body and unleashing a steady dribble of liquid.

Thunder rumbled off in the distance. You might not need your Golem in order to fill the pond...

The mammalian cupped his hand under the pore, letting the water flow into it and collect, before taking a drink. It wasn't the most effective way of sating his thirst, but it somehow struck him as awkward if he simply mouthed the creature's pliable body. He snorted at the notion. He was at least somewhat more civilized than that. The golem allowed the liquid to pour from its body for as long as its master needed, standing perfectly still. Its inner seed hovered near the closest pore that allowed it to view the leopard, taking in his appearance, his touch, his scent.. It thrived off this closeness, even if it wasn't evident.
The water from the golem was clean and pure, though a little flavorless because of it. It lacked the minerals that made water taste either good or bad. Not that he minded much; it was more of an observation than anything.

The leopard lapped up a good few handfuls before his attention was caught by the rumble of distant thunder. He looked up to the sky, noting the clouds rolling in. A frown curled his lips down. He didn't account for mid-afternoon rain.. Or the threat of a thunderstorm. He didn't mind working in the rain much. It was an inconvenience more than anything. The little walker would probably appreciate having some rain to soak up though. Alright, if the rain was light enough, he'd work through it. If it was a true storm, he'd need to find some quick shelter.. But until the rain actually rolled through, there was still work to do.
"Stop. This one is sated for now", he told the golem as he returned his attention back to it. A small puddle formed under it from the run off. It was like a faucet; once opened, it needed to be manually closed..

The open vent on the golem's body disappeared, leaving no trace it had ever been there to begin with. That odd, squishy-but-not body of theirs was truly something fascinating to the leopard.. He would've enjoyed taking his time, poking its flesh and having it open more holes in itself if not for the work that needed to be done. By the looks and sound of it, he'd probably be able to finished rounding the perimeter and get started uprooting weeds and undergrowth by the time the rain came around.
"Let us continue, yes?"
The careful prowling around the dense foliage continued, little flag markers planted into the earth every few yards. He imagined the fencing, surrounded by flowers on either side.. Maybe concrete on the outside, flowers on the inside? No, that would be too unnatural.. But it would also make for a nice path around. Ah the options. He didn't know what to settle with.

He had nobody to impress but himself. And maybe the creatures living within the garden. Lotine, as far as he knew, were highly observant. Disappointing Valii would be a shame. She was a bright and vibrant one, the perfect centerpiece to the plot. If she didn't approve of her home, he would feel awful..
A sigh and shake of the head steered his mind away from that and on to better thoughts. Like how wonderful everything will look when he was finished. A perfectionist, he was not. But the pride he already had growing for this little patch of land was enough to assure him it would turn out just fine.
Xentus cast the occasional glance over his shoulder to make sure the water golem was keeping pace. And to watch it struggle over the dense plant growth. The knee-high creature wasn't quite designed for this kind of terrain, but witnessing it waddle and tumble was amusing.

It was an oddly cute creature. He could appreciate that it was now more mobile than its previous state of being a head with wiggling tentacle arms. It was sometimes a pain toting around the basketball-sized seedling around whenever he wanted to spend time bonding with it. He didn't mind it in the moment, but now that he experienced these creatures in a more mobile state, he didn't quite look forward to starting the process all over again.
Another flag marker was planted down, with only a few more yards of the perimeter to go. The leopard's ears flicked toward the thunder, which was becoming less and less distant every time he heard it. The sun was gradually becoming covered by low hanging clouds, providing nice yet ominous shade. Perhaps he wouldn't get the time to begin uprooting as he thought.. With that, Xentus made haste, a nervous eye keeping watch on the skies.

The water golem seemed to pick up on the man's nervousness as well as the impending rain. It raised its shelled head into the air, parting open the segments to take a look into the sky. The mammalian glanced at it curiously. Hmm? What was it up to? The thing didn't usually do much aside follow him around and clatter its shell from time to time. The creature assessed the air, collected beads of moisture on its inner seed. It carefully crawled after Xentus in this strange position, feeding on the increasing saturation. The mammalian couldn't quite figure it out, and waved it off in favor of it just doing weird golem things..
Another marker down, a few more yards stepped, another marker placed. Prancing about in the undergrowth wasn't the most fun chore.. Weeds and grass grew rampantly, itchy and ugly in comparison to the elegant flowers and vegetables that he had in mind to grow.

But among the untamed chaos of natural flora were some hidden gems. Just as the man was about finished with the task, a bright orange in the undergrowth caught his eye. A small patch of flowers. They were distinct from the weeds, with large, lightly glowing blossoms. Plus, they were rather pretty. Unfortunately, he didn't quite know what they were. Some kind of wildflower or another, he could only guess. He figured he could save a couple from the impending rain and do a bit of research on them later.
Out of the bunch, he was able to carefully pluck two from their woody stems. The rest were mangled by his unrefined touch. A shame, but he didn't mind. These two were marvelous. "Take a look, interesting, ne?", he turned to the walker and presented it the flower, hoping it might appreciate his find. The creature tilted its head to aim the open part at the flowers, yellow seed within seeming to consider them carefully.
