"Oh, what fun!" said Gilly, fluttering about in a tizzy of excitement. "I've never seen the beasts from these laboratories before. How big did you say they were, again?" One of the good things about Gilly, Seveth was finding, was that she wasn't as large as most of the Draconics that he had accompanied thus far. Not that she walked, so maybe a difference in size wouldn't have constituted a substantial difference in pace anyway, but he found it wasn't nearly as difficult to keep up with her. "They come in all sorts of sizes," he said. Just like Draconics, he thought, but didn't say; the topic of the labs at all was apparently a sore point in these parts, which made the idea of a labs creatures petting zoo here all the more strange. But evidently some Draconics were at least willing to go to see a spectacle, if Gilly's interest was any indication.

Subei tried to encourage a few of his kin to come along with him for an adventure, but none of them had taken the bait. Ah well, that just meant that he would have to make his own fun. He was pretty good at that, so he wasn't too worried. He quickly floated down to the petting zoo and grabbed himself a ticket. "What to see first..." he wondered aloud. It wasn't that bad being alone, but he thought it might be nice to have someone to converse with. Since he didn't have anyone to answer to, he figured that he could just do whatever he wanted. He thought that Zinyong would definitely plan everything out carefully, so he did exactly the opposite. He picked a seemingly random direction and flew off to investigate. He ended up in front of a pen full of fluffy creatures of some variety. What were they called again? Eh, he didn't actually care that much, but he did like the look of them.

Seveth wondered, privately, whether Gilly's interest was merely voyeuristic or academic, or if she genuinely wanted to know more about the community of the city surrounding the labs. Not many Draconics ever ventured out to the city itself, and inevitably the ones who did were doing so to visit someone they were soul bound to. A petting zoo... was a rare chance for people to bring the city to the Draconics, sort of... but there was probably a good reason why it didn't happen terribly often.
"Well, what sort of sizes do you think will be at the petting zoo then?" Gilly asked. "You must have some idea, right?"
"Usually for petting zoos, they pick smaller animals, but... Draconics are a lot bigger than, uh, humans and all." That felt like an understatement considering some of the Draconics Seveth had met. "Besides, don't you want it to be a surprise?"

When he had first heard the idea, Subei was very keen to check it out, but now that he was hovering there in front of a pen, he felt a little unsure. The moving mass of fluffy creatures had all pushed up against the side of the fence to get a better look at him, and he didn't know what to think of them. Were they predators? He had no idea, and there was nobody nearby to ask. Surely a petting zoo wouldn't fill a pen with dangerous creatures and leave them to be wandered into by just anyone... would they?
Subei scrunched up his face and slowly flew around the pen, hoping that some part of it would provide him with information. The many eyes of the fluffy beasts followed him as he floated around, which he found unnerving. He had no idea how fascinating a brightly colored, faintly glowing Draconic would look to them.
"Aha!" he exclaimed. He had come across a sign with some information on it. It had the name of the species, at least. "Okay, Mm-Morp, nice to meet you," he said, making eye contact with the pink one standing closest to the sign.

"Well," said Gilly, pausing to consider Seveth's question. "You might be right. It's more interesting if it's a surprise."
"There, that's the spirit," Seveth said, grinning at her. And it saved him from trying to offer an explanation he didn't have. Thus mollified, they made the rest of the way to the petting zoo with Gilly carrying on the conversation by herself for the most part. She had no end of conjectures on what they might see there, and for all the strangeness of the creatures manufactured by the labs, by the time they got there, Seveth was beginning to wonder if even they could live up to the flights of fantasy that Gilly's imagination had taken.
Once they got there, however, Seveth could see that most of the creatures were rather... ordinary, by labs standards. These were certainly the sorts of creatures you'd expect to see at a petting zoo - the larger end, but even so.

Something Subei did not know was that those 'Morp' he was looking at were young, and they were far from their full size. They were still in the awkward fluffy stage in between being a baby and being a huge beast with horns. A large majority of them stared at him as he got close to the fence and contemplated going in for a closer look. He was unlike anything they had ever seen, and the feeling was mutual.
"Well, okay," Subei said aloud. He didn't know who he was talking to, but he did it anyway. He gracefully floated over the fence and landed on the other side. Unfortunately, he accidentally smacked one of the white Murp in the face with his tail when he did so.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, oh look at you... we're twins!" Subei looked down at his mostly white tail and held it up next to the white Murp. He smiled at the coincidence and felt an odd kinship with the creature already.

"Oh," said Gilly, inclining her head. "Some of them look familiar. We hunt something similar to this for food, don't we? Or at least the stronger fliers do, anyway." She pointed out the Murp, and Seveth was left to ponder the idea of a Draconic like Gilly trying to bring down any sort of prey. He couldn't imagine it. She wasn't as small as the Shalaya who was currently playing with the Murp, but... Well, her feet weren't even attached! How was she supposed to carry away a whole carcass?
... Maybe he shouldn't be thinking these thoughts so close to the baby animals. "Look, there's someone here already," he said instead. "We could go say hello."
"Not a bad idea," said Gilly. No sooner did she arrive at this conclusion than did she float off in that general direction. "Ho there! You wouldn't happen to have figured out the secrets of this dread beast, would you?"

Subei was starting to feel strange as the various fluffy creatures stared at him in unison. They made a soft, peculiar sound, one that he had never heard another Draconic make. He rather liked it. It made him feel fuzzy inside.
"Ah! Oh, do not..." Subei felt something grab his tail and he yanked it away, thankfully before any real damage was done. "I am not for eating!" he said. That was not something he had imagined needing to say when he got up this morning.
He then noticed that there were hanging baskets full of what he assumed was food, given the way the Murps were poking at it with their noses. He grabbed out a handful and held it low to the ground so that the smaller ones could grab some. They eagerly tugged it away from him (and each other) and in just seconds it was all gone.
It was then that he was approached by another Draconic. He dropped the single piece of straw he was still clutching in his claw and smiled at her. "They're really soft!" he exclaimed. As if to prove his point, one of the bigger Murps rubbed up against his side, looking for affection.
"Other than that... uh... no," he looked down at the scuffle he had caused while trying to feed them.

Once they got closer, a few different things became clear. First was that this Draconic was clearly much more comfortable with these creatures than Gilly was - or at the very least, that his head wasn't necessarily filled with outlandish concepts of what they might be or do. The second was that he was in the process of feeding them from a bag left there for that purpose. "Huh," said Seveth. "They really went all the way with this petting zoo business."
Gilly inclined her head at the other Shalaya's response. "Soft?" she said. She peered down at the Murps, eyes narrowing in suspicion. "Ah, yes, the inviting texture must be a way to lure in unsuspecting innocents. And once they let their guard down..."
"No, really, they're just Murps," Seveth cut in, before she could say something potentially horrifying. "People use them for wool, not to launch attacks on each other."

Subei had a passing familiarity with labs creatures, but he had never actually met a dangerous one. He was intellectually familiar with the idea of the lab-grown monstrosities, but the kinds of things that ended up wandering around his home were mostly of the 'cute fish' variety. Therefore, when he laid eyes on the "Morps", he figured that they were just weird and cute. Humans loved weird cute things, so it made sense.
His eyes grew wide when Gilly shared her theory. They had been chewing on his tail... maybe she had a point! The human with her was quick to cut her off, but the thought continued to linger in his brain for a moment. Nothing that cute could actually be horrible, right?
"Oh, wool! That makes sense," he said with a nod. He wasn't sure how the humans retrieved said wool, but he wouldn't ask.
"Muuuurp," he repeated, long and slow. "I like that! It sounds like that sound that they make, kind of, don't you think?"

Seveth laughed at the other Shalaya's comment. "Oh, I like you!" he declared. All the Shalayas he had met up until this point, probably including Gilly herself, had at least pretentions of intellectualism, but this one was just out here living his best life. "You're right, it does, doesn't it? Those lab guys must have been at a real loss for names when these guys came around." He reached out to pet one of the Murps, but it butted its head into his leg before he could. "Ack!" he said, nearly toppling over. "Guess they don't like me..."
"Serves you right for underestimating them," Gilly remarked smugly. But the same Murp then rounded on her, and her scales paled slightly in alarm. "Ohhhh no, don't come over here! I don't have any food!" She ran - or floated, really - away from it as it approached her, but it wasn't interested enough in her to give proper chase.

"Hah, thanks!" Subei responded in a jovial tone. He always liked to meet a friendly stranger. "I'm Subei, by the wa..." It was then that they were interrupted by the Murp butting into the human. He looked on in concern for a moment before it was clear that his new buddy was probably fine.
"I think you need to be more pink," Subei said with a sagely nod. That was his going theory about why they liked him so much, anyway. As far as he knew, humans didn't come in pink, but that didn't stop him from making the joke.
"Oh! There's some food over here," he said to Gilly as she floated away. He actually had no idea whether or not they were supposed to help themselves to the food, but he didn't really care. If they weren't meant to have it, somebody would have taken it away, right? "Careful, though, they're really ... nippy."

"Well, I guess I'm out of luck then," said Seveth, spreading his hands and shrugging. "I don't know about you, but I sure can't change colors." In fact, he hadn't actually seen a Draconic who could - or at least they definitely hadn't shown him. He wondered if Subei was making a joke, or if he was serious in his suggestion. Not all the Draconics he met had a lot of experience with humans.
Gilly, who had been chased all the way to the other side of the pens and over the fence, peered at them from behind its protective cover. "I'm good here, thanks," she said, hunkered down as if she was a soldier hiding from enemy lines.
"Oh, come on, they're not so bad. You just have to feed them, right?" Farm animals were really not his thing either, but you had to try everything once! Seveth made his way to the food sack... and was immediately bowled over by another enthusiastic Murp.

"Well, we could paint you, though I suppose just grabbing some food might be less... messy." Not as much fun though, he thought. He was already quite fond of this new guy. Sometimes humans could be weird, but this one was fun!
As for the Draconic with him, well, Subei wasn't sure what to think of her. She was clearly not happy about the Murps running around. He thought they were cute and harmless, but he wasn't sure if he could convince her. Especially not if she was insisting on hiding behind the fence like that. How could she make friends if she was hiding?
"Oh yea!" Subei called out, ignoring the fact that the human was knocked over for trying to get to the food just a second ago. He floated up over Linyü without making an attempt to help him up and grabbed two handfuls of food. Then he hastily darted over to the other side of the pen in front of Gilly and dumped it there so that the Murp would race over and she would get a good look at them.
"See? Aren't they cute?"
