Sarabi heard his voice, and turned around. She didn't seem to have found anything quite yet. She did give him another of her infamous huffs, however. "Well, maybe we can find something else to hack at together, don't you think?" Renathan asks of her. Sarabi looks at him, with her clever expression. It is obvious that she doesn't understand what he is saying exactly, but she seems to pick out some meaning from it, or another on her own, and continue on. Renathan gathers their things and moves along, following her as she sniffed around. She was, after all, much better than him at figuring out where the gems were, so he would leave that to her instead of trying to figure it out himself. They walk down at a little ways, and Renathan gets to thinking about some things- maybe it would be best to start working on her with some lessons?

Of course, Sarabi would have to be taught her name. It was something that she kind of seemed to pick up on with him anyway- but only when he said it. It would be a simple thing to begin to teach, too, but she was so busy right now trying to find anything of interest in the walls that he wasn't sure if he was going to be able to get her full attention right away. What would he teach after that? He wondered about this as they continued on, with Sarabi sniffing at the walls, and Renathan not far behind pulling all of their equipment in a cart behind them. The light lagged behind them, but Renathan was able to see really well due to it- how long had they been down here, anyway?
So, it would be name, and then... Maybe come? That sounded very demeaning. Sarabi was, after all, quite smart.

However, it would be incredibly useful for Renathan to be able to signal to her to return if they started working on different parts of the mines, and something like a gas-leak or something started. The mines were an incredibly dangerous place, and Renathan would not be surprised if they were hit with another disaster in the future. It would be good to have something in place as a backup, a safety, just in case anything were to happen. Renathan knew that he had lots of them in the past- the time with Lisle whenever he was a young chicklet was the first thing that popped up into his head. He wouldn't want anything like that to happen to Sarabi, but then again, she was much more proficient in the ways of living in the mines. She could probably keep herself out of trouble more than any of Renathan's other charges.

So, Renathan decided, name it was! Sarabi should pick it up incredibly easily, Renathan had been saying it for a long time, and she generally answered to it due to her attachment to him anyway. "Sarabi." Renathan called out up ahead of him. Sarabi huffed, as if she knew, and looked over her shoulder at him with a bit of frustration. "Good Sarabi, yup, that is your name." Renathan said, voice as even as possible. He would have tossed her a treat, but it felt... Wrong, with such a creature. She was very smart, as smart as Lisle, but she didn't have the benefit of having started life as an animal with animal intelligence. "Good job. Sarabi!" He called out to her again, just as she was going to turn around. She huffs again, looking frustrated, and turned to look at the russet mammalian again.

Names would probably be easier with creatures at this level of caring. Renathan had spent a long time with Sarabi, and it showed. However, that didn't necessarily mean that Sarabi was going to play the game, so to speak, and whenever Renathan simply gave her another compliment, she gave him a frustrated look, and then kept going. "Sarabi!" He called. The intelligent mining familiar simply walks on. She sniffs the wall, as if searching for rocks through scent or something (perhaps it was another sense entirely? Renathan wouldn't know) and ignores Renathan at all. It was obvious that she didn't have the patience for simple things like that, especially not when she 'knew' them already. She knew the tone of voice Renathan used for her, so why should she continue to prove that?
Renathan sighed. Apparently, this was going to take a lot longer than it should to teach her this.

It was perhaps a common maxim to state that one cannot learn if their cup is already full, and perhaps it was proper when it came to Sarabi. She had been working with Renathan for so long unchecked that it might actually wind up being good in the long run for her to be taught. Renathan was sure that he'd never ever not even once again go to the pit, so he wasn't really keen on teaching her attacking moves or anything, so it would be most likely limited to things that could be useful for them both down in the mines.
"Sarabi!" He called after her, a little more stern this time. The stern tone changed the tone of the name that he typically used, and that caused Sarabi enough curiosity to turn around and look at him. "Good job, Sarabi!" He said to her, catching up and giving her a pat on the back.

It was fairly obvious that Sarabi was not at all happy with this turn of events. She wanted to find more minerals, not stand here while her human had some kind of... Fit of some kind. She made it fairly obvious this time that she was looking at him. Like, 'yes, you said my name, so I looked, happy?' she seemed to say with her expression. Renathan furrows his brow beneath the mask. Had he just... Oh, he thought, he must just be getting used to her a bit more.
"Good job, Sarabi." He said, simply. He was going to have to spread this out over some time, to make sure that she got it. There was no real need to do this every two seconds with a creature as intelligent as her. He patted her on the shoulder again, trying to convey his praise. Sarabi just huffed at him.

They did not find a lot over the next hour. However, Renathan did stop her every once in a while by calling her name. Sarabi seemed beyond frustrated with this, but played the game as requested of her. Whenever he name was called, she would look. It seeped into her over the hour that apparently her name could be said in lots of different tonalities, and that it was not just the one that she had learned over her time with Renathan that was her name. Over that time, Renathan really felt like he got the idea through to her, though it took a lot of repetition. More repetition that he had indeed expected! Soon enough, they were walking quite deep into the mines. Renathan had no idea what Sarabi was looking for, but he hoped that it was something that would indeed be worth it to him.
"Sarabi!" He calls, again. Sarabi turns towards him, and huffs. "Good job!"

Sadly, there were not an infinite amount of hours in the day, and they were easily beginning to run out of them. It was sad not to have found anything for a whole hour, but Renathan had hopefully gotten some progress done during that time. What should he teach her next? He pondered this as they continued on down the mine shaft. Sarabi seemed very determined to be going somewhere very specific, but Renathan was not entirely sure whether they were going to find anything or not. He sure hoped that they would, though. His pocket was very light for how long of a trip this was.
"Where are we headed, Sarabi?" He finally asks the empty air. He knows that she doesn't know exactly what he is talking about, but he is bored, and thus t he silence is bothering him. He fills the air with a few different voiced complaints over the time.

Sarabi huffs again at the sound of her name, and looks at Renathan. The russet mammalian frowned beneath his mask, and put his hands on his hips. "We haven't found anything for an hour!" He said, not actually mad, just desperate to not hear the dreaded silence of the mines. Silence was actually generally a good thing, and Sarabi was quite frustrated that Renathan was making noise. Didn't he know that another mining familiar may be drawn by the noise, or may have time to move their nest instead of abandoning it? That would mean that they wouldn't find as much interesting minerals. She huffed at him in return, raising her wings a tad. "What do you think about that, Sarabi?" He said.
Sarabi tilts her head oddly to one side, unsure of what his noises meant. He didn't usually make a lot of noises around her.

Finally, Sarabi puts her foot down. Renathan was making noise and being useless. However, she did need him to dig whenever they went where she was taking him, because it was quicker for both of them to dig in the wall than it would be for her to do it by herself. But he was making noises, and not being helpful, so she simply moves forward, ignoring him for now. Renathan noticed that she didn't seem to be in the mood for any kind of games or fun, so he simply frowns and follows after her. He was going to have to come up with that training list relatively quickly. Maybe for the next time they were down here, because they were wasting a lot of time down here at the moment even. He sighs, and begins dragging the mining cart again that had all of his tools in it. Hopefully they'd find something soon.

Renathan had really been hoping for a 'quiet' trip, but of course things had to go sour (in the best way possible). They could hear the noise of something down the tunnel, and Sarabi moves closer to Renathan out of a tad of caution. She was, after all, quite small (though most mining familiars are). "What is it, Sarabi?" He asks out of concern. She simply looks at him, and then moves her eyes forward, and they both walk a little ways ahead, until there is a bend in the tunnel. The scuffling was apparently closer. They could see a rather large shape having some kind of issue with a much smaller one. Just what was going on?
Sarabi stays back behind Renathan, perhaps wisely, as Renathan goes for a bit of a treat that he had brought. He always brought treats. That worm was HUGE.
"Uh, hello?" He calls out, voice soft. He doesn't close the gap between himself and the creatures at all, but he does stand there where they can hopefully see the treats.

The worm is instantly interested. Food? The hoard is forgotten about as it slithers forward to vacuum up the treat. The wyrm does not appear quite as happy, though - it stares, hard, and coils around its stones.

Renathan had to admit, he didn't know a whole lot about these kinds of creatures. He also knew that Sarabi absolutely hated when they came across other critters down in the mines. However, he was absolutely ready to try to learn about them. He notices that the large worm is really interested in the food (and didn't seem all that bright really) so he tosses a treat in the big worm's direction. It was obvious, however, that the green wyrm creature wasn't as interested in snacks. Perhaps it was that it ate gemstones? The russet mammalian heard Sarabi huff beside him, and she moved past him a bit, towards the little green wyrm. In her mouth was some kind of stone that he didn't notice that she had before.
She must have been hiding it from him- the stone. Whatever it was, it glinted in the light, and was obviously not his. She seems to be trying to offer it to the small wyrm.
Trusting Sarabi's instincts, Renathan instead focuses his attention on the large worm, taking another treat out for it. How... odd. He offered the treat with some amount of hesitation.
