It was an open invitation to spar. Just himself to fight, for once. The mammalian was accustomed to letting his beasts do the fighting for him; they were far more capable than himself, more powerful, more versatile. Yet, he wasn't afraid to take up arms himself - or begin trying to. The gym offered a few different practice weapons for use, as well as armor to don. Xentus tried to maintain an air of confidence about him while he perused the choices available, eventually settling on a two handed blade for his first weapon to wield. The katana felt as heavy as a real one, or so he imagined it would. Almost too heavy in his hands as he tightened and adjusted his grip. A thought passed through his mind asking whether or not this was actually even safe. He wasn't expecting to get home without a solid bruise or two, but he wasn't keen on getting diced. The thought was shrugged off while he awaited a potential partner.

| Weapon; Swords (one-handed) - Passive Requires: None Description: This allows the user to use a one-handed sword weapon. Training in this expertise allows the use of ALL one-handed sword weapons, without favoritism. Effect: No effect in battle. A player must spend a minimum of 1 point in this expertise for it to take effect. No more than 1 point can be spent in this expertise.
Fencing - Offensive / Defensive Requires: Sword (one-handed) Description: Fencing - a delicate balance of attacking and defending - is a fine art that contains a lot more than mere "hack and slash" and can help to prevent even the most well-trained foe’s attack. Effect: Add one 4-sided die for every point in Dexterity you have to the damage total. If used Defensively, you deflect the opponent’s attack, avoiding 10% of the damage. For every 1 additional point in Fencing, increase this reduction by 10%.
Dual-Wield - Passive Requires: (2) Weapon (one-handed) Description: With practised coordination, you can now use two weapons at the same time. Effect: No effect in battle. A player must spend a minimum of 2 points in this skill for it to take effect. Allows you to wield two (one-handed) weapons at the same time.
Double Swing - Offensive Requires: (2) Bladed Weapons (one-handed) + 2 points in Dual-Wield Description: The user swings both weapons at once, slashing at the foe with both of them. Effect: Add one 4-sided die for every point in Dexterity you have to the damage total of both weapons. The second weapon deals 100% less damage. For every 1 point in Double Swing, this damage reduction is reduced by 10%.
Overpower - Defensive Requires: Sword (any) or Axe (any) Description: You block the foe's attack with your sword and stay locked in that stance. Face to face with your foe, you try to out-muscle them and with just the right twist, cause their weapon to clatter on the ground. Effect: Upon successful defense, avoid 50% of the damage done and begin a test of Strength. You and the foe must then roll against each other’s Strength (one d10 + Strength each) to see if the foe can keep their weapon. If you win the test of power, they are Disarmed. This causes them to lose the weapon for 2 turns (Attacking and Defending), since it needs to be retrieved.

She was late. As much as evident, but the fact that thought kept pressing against the inside of her skull neither changed the fact nor helped remedy it. So instead, she tried to keep pushing back and back, while simultaneously pulling on the padded leather chest-piece that fit strangely, smelled weird, and overall did not feel at all the same as her bespoke armor back home. The mammalian rushed into the training room, still fashioning the last straps on the shoulder, and managing to somehow not drop the wooden swords under her arms in the process.
"Ah, sorry the delay," she smiled with a side of sheepish, hoping that would defuse any awkwardness, "Critter emergency back home caused a delayed start." It's not often estharne hork up hairballs, but when they do, and they themselves tend to be the size of a small horse, it's not exactly something you can 'fix later'.
Heading to the centre of the room, the sphinx rolled her shoulders gradually, feeling the unfamiliar weight of both weapons and armour, "I hope you didn't have to wait for too long?"

Time was passed practicing swinging the sword, adjusting footing whilst swinging, and figuring out just much 'hi' to put into 'hiyah', if any at all. He felt cumbersome. Especially considering wearing many clothes wasn't his forte, let alone wearing armor. But, he beared with it. Couldn't quit before he got a few rounds of sparring in! The leopard was caught mid-swing as someone came in, to which he staggered slightly at the sound of in surprise. The slash was left unfinished as the man's stance relaxed, and instead he turned to greet the new arrival. "It's quite alright, Xentus understands", he said with a smile, though slightly out of breathe, "No, not too long, fret not. Gave some time for this one to limber up" A chuckle escaped him, he'd hoped his inexperience didn't show too badly. But, even if it did, that was the whole point of this, right? A hand was offered forward to his newfound partner to seal the greeting. "Xentus is ready to begin whenever you are, miss..?", his voice trailed off, trying to figure how to best address the sphinx.

The relief on the sphinx's face could be readable, as the last sliver of that being-late worry gets let go, "Oh good, thank you. I'm usually much better regarding time." Although the 'usually' in this context is.. a bit more loose in terms of meaning. She's certainly been better at it, but also worse.
There's a breath out, and an immediate attention to the other mammalian's manner of speech, picking up what she wasn't entirely sure how to identify at first, before realizing 'Xentus' in this context seems to be a name. How curious, she's certainly met people speaking in third person before, though not at all that many. Blinking, she's quick to recover her manners, as she reaches out to shake the hand with a smile, "I'm called Darky. Nice to meet you. And I appreciate taking up the training offer, too. There's not that many places in the City to do that."
With the introductions out of the way, she takes a few steps back, pull the headguard on, and twirls the wooden scimitars a few times to get used to their balance, "Ready as ever."

Miss Darky. He committed the name and face to memory thusly. Now, to see if he could hold his own against her. Judging by the way the sphinx seemed to move with an air of comfort or confidence with her faux-blades, Xentus figured she was no stranger to sparring or fighting. He was certainly looking to learn a thing or two, even more so from someone experienced. Excited anticipation swelled in his chest as he squared up to face off.
“Very well! Let’s begin”
With a tightened grip and sturdy footing, he lurched forward to make the first move. The wooden katana aimed not directly for his opponent, but for their weapons, looking to lock blades. If he could gain control, perhaps he could level the playing field. Two blades against one seemed hardly fair, though he wasn’t going to voice such. No, he was far more interested in seeing how well they might serve their wielder.

This was it, that subtle thrum of adrenaline starting up, although far from anything that life-and-death as she's normally used to. 'Used to'.. What a weird phrase for the collection of her general experience here in the Labs. Supposedly a haven and sanctuary from the wild, and yet she's had to draw her actual swords out on more occasions that should have been necessary.
In that light, it was nice to not fear for one's life, for once.
With the mammalian making the first move, the sphinx holds her ground for a few seconds, before reacting with a few quick flourishes using one of the scimitars. Deflect, then counter-attack, that's the idea.. but the trouble she's facing is that her swords are relatively short, whereas the katana extends the mammalian's range considerably in comparison - To get at him, she'll need to eventually have to find a way to duck under both his attack and his defence.
But one thing at a time, as the wooden scimitar connects, the wrist twists, and hopefully the blow is directed aside.

The two-handed strike scrapes on by, still sending a small shudder down her arm, but managing to avoid connecting to anywhere on the body, at least. There's a split-second of the sphinx seeming to anticipate a quick follow-up, or perhaps not expecting the blow to get deflected without a lot more hurt (Admittedly it doesn't help that up until now she's kept having to fight creatures, as opposed to just.. people, who don't tend to hit a lot harder and leave marks that take a while to heal over), but she's quick to recover.
One of the scimitars makes a feint through the air, before being grip-switched to back-hand hold the handle, while she tries to duck in underneath the mammalian's defence, and use the other wooden blade to 'cut' across the padded midriff. A delicate balance between two-handed strength and range, versus two-weapon quickness and closer quarters, though one where she doesn't necessarily want to tire herself out too early in the fight.

Ah, how he tried. His attempt at flinging one of the scimitars away failed, brushed away with what seemed like ease. A look of surprise flashed across the man's face, with one part amazement and one part panic. That quick reaction by his opponent was admirable. And they moved quickly to follow up to boot, leaving no breadth for him to even consider swinging again. Move, he had to move somehow. An uncertain two-step back, a tail lashing to stay balanced. Xentus found himself having a hard time keeping up with the sphinx's movements and tabs on both of their blades, and a harder time trying to figure what to do about that exactly. No time to think, he could only act. Use whatever vantage he could, little as it may be. He grit his teeth and readied his grip on the katana to face the flat side of the blade out to block the incoming swing as it came.

Too slow. As the katana was turned in an attempt to block the incoming blow, he could already feel the impact of the wood sliding over leather. Knocked a bit of wind out of him to boot. But that likely would've hurt a lot more without the padded leather protecting his splotched hide. Two more steps back were taken, for space and the briefest moment to gather himself. Miss Darky was good at this. And he, not so much. But this was only the beginning! He felt he was starting to get more comfortable with the sword in his grasp and armor hugging his fur, and moving around with both. Not that it meant he knew what he was doing exactly. Xentus let out a sharp exhale then made his move - aiming to knock a blade away from his opponent again. Step in, move quickly, and hope for his swing to connect as he imagined. He learned from the first time, or so he thought.

The wooden scimitar swung in, around the guard, and... contact! It was more a tap than anything against the panther's side, but the sphinx's head almost bobbed for a moment at the hit. In part cause she wasn't entirely confident the motion was well-executed, but also perhaps in larger part cause there was still that slight concern that a hit would actually hurt her partner. Even as he quickly retreated out of range, she suppressed that instinct to say sorry - they were here to train, to test each other's skills, so getting apologetic could make things all kind of awkward.
That split moment of pause did end up placing her a bit on the back foot as the panther quickly lunged again, a sudden blink and a reflexive swipe of the backhand scimitar up and across her, to try and deflect the blow away, even as she took a few steps back. It wasn't the fanciest of moves, but even desperation has its uses!

Get your head in the game, get your head in the game, get yo-- The mantra sometimes helped, depending on the sheer level of desperation any one situation was causing. It might've even helped here, even though the stakes were about as low as they could get and it was all intended in good fun.
But it didn't help her arm, as suddenly the katana connected with the scimitar held backwards, and it helped her wrist even less when suddenly the slimmer blade twisted, hooked between her arm and the flat of hers, and following a short, sharp twist of pain, her fingers were gripping mere air.
Oh. (The wooden scimitar clattering onto the practise matts to their right). Well, then. That's.. unfortunate.
The look the sphinx gives the panther is one part surprise, two parts sudden vulnerable concern.. and just a pinch of reflexive panic as she darts in to swing the remaining scimitar in a flourishing circle, before ducking under the guard aiming for the shin.. and clambering slightly desperately rightward towards the fallen blade.
