Whisper followed. She nearly tripped whenever a long root or clump of unkempt and dry grass would wrap around her small legs, and she did trip over a molehill once or twice. Being small was difficult! Still, she moved extra hard to keep up with the taller individual. She missed the days where she could ride around in Morgan's pocket all day. She wasn't even sure why they patrolled this territory, since it obviously wasn't theirs. She patrolled the mansion all the time, or at least the places where Morgan allowed her to be, but she didn't understand why they patrolled this slice of territory when it wasn't even really all that useful. Still, she wanted to do what Morgan wanted her to do, at least a little bit, so she followed anyway. That didn't mean that she had to like it, though.
Maybe one day, she would be the leader.

The bespectacled human wasn't even entirely sure if it would be worth it to bring her to the mansion this month. It was certainly Morgan's favorite month, but sometimes the mansion was a little dangerous, and October was certainly the most dangerous one. Sometimes it didn't even seem to matter how well it was going! Everything could go to hell in a handbasket in the mansion in two seconds flat, and then go back to normal like nothing had happened. It made it a bit scary to be taking such a small creature with them to a place like this. However, it couldn't be helped. They didn't really have enough time to spend either at the mansion or training Whisper by herself, without doing both at the same time. Ah well, they thought. It didn't really matter in the long run.
The outer grounds were even different this month, Morgan observed. October was a powerful month.

Despite the dangers lurking around every corner here at the mansion, the human knew that this was their favorite mansion month.
The ground was patchy. Some areas of old and dying grass grew wild and unkempt. Others had bald earth looking up at the sky instead of grass. In some places, Morgan could smell wet earth. In others, it smelled like burning bonfires off in the distance, even if there were none that Morgan could scan the horizon and see. They wanted to keep an eye out just in case Whisper got hurt somehow- but of course they knew they were being a little too cautious. For now, at least, while the morning sun was up, the place might be a little less dangerous.
The mansion was bad about changing the time of day, somehow, as they continued. Because of that, Morgan wasn't about to take the morning light for granted.

Still, the sunrise was pretty. It was red though, and that typically meant that rain was coming. The clouds looked innocent at the moment, but Morgan did not doubt that eventually, they would not. They were slowly learning these kinds of things from fishing, of all things. Another of those activities that they thought they would never do, but that having a soulbond had changed about them. They considered eventually taking the tat-family out on individual fishing trips, perhaps. It sounded like it could be fun. Speaking of that, Endymion still needed to learn how to fly...
This was going to be a long month. Just thinking about it while walking on the October mansion grounds made them tired. Perhaps they had bit off a little more than they could chew. After hearing Whisper fall on her face for the sixth time on a molehill, Morgan scooped her up, and stuck her in their pocket.

Whisper was MUCH happier in the pocket of Morgan's slightly oversized labcoat than on the ground. It was starting to get cold outside, and it is quite difficult for a small critter like her to keep her warmth in such cool temperatures. She could piggyback off of Morgan's own warmth in this way, and of course she didn't have to put as much energy out for it, either. Morgan was of course much less worried about her since she was in the pocket. Of course, last time they were here a strange monster had stolen her from their pocket without the bespectacled human noticing at first, but they hoped that this month would be much less dangerous in that regard. Perhaps they'd try not to overstay their welcome in the mansion grounds, this time. Morgan really just wanted to spend some time with Whisper, and check out a few of their hypotheses about the mansion itself.

Morgan used to be a bit more diligent about gathering information from the Mansion. They had figured that there was something to learn empirically about the entire place, but after a year's journey in the place, the human realized that there wasn't really anything that they could find out about the Mansion using the scientific method. The Mansion was more of an eclectic force, and less of a rigid affair. Due to this, Morgan continued to study and come up with questions that they wanted answered, but they didn't bother writing down every little detail. Broad strokes, not the trees, Morgan thought. However, it was sometimes difficult to pay as much attention as they wanted when they brought critters along. Thankfully, little Whisper was beginning to be much easier to keep around, what with her behavioral training and all. With any luck, she'd be an excellent companion, no matter what she grew into someday. [7]

The truth was that Morgan was burning theirself out a bit. They really wanted to spend time with Endymion, and teach him how to fly, but there were some days that he just couldn't get to the City, and Morgan couldn't go down to the Canyon. Morgan had a family at home to take care of, too. It made them feel a little guilty that they were exploring the mansion with Whisper, instead of out there teaching their other half how to use his wings.
So perhaps they wouldn't stay out here as long as they normally would. Whisper wasn't going to just randomly grow- there was a process for that, after all. So Morgan decides to do some simple checking around the outside, scouting for anything of use, and then maybe come back later when they had more time. Whisper wouldn't mind, they knew. She was a little too simple to mind.

Morgan felt guilty that they didn't have a million and one metaphorical arms and eyes to deal with all of their family, and pets, and everything else, and WELP, and their own aspirations all at once. They had to pick one thing at a time and try not to half-ass it, and it was entirely exhausting on their already somewhat fragile mental fortitude. Sometimes, it wore on them more harshly than usual. Today was one of those days. A wind rushed through over the grasses, biting into their skin through their clothes as if they were nothing. The (tinier than they wanted to be) human shuddered, and then wrapped their labcoat around them more closely. They surveyed the area, giving a protesting Whisper a pet or two every now and again to placate her. She was ALWAYS hungry, even after she had just been fed! It would actually be funny, in another light.

Their tour around the area was nearly complete, with Morgan even seeing the well (surrounded by... A graveyard this time- gross... Now they wondered if there were actually bodies down there! Maybe they would dig one or... Well, two up, just to check, later on in the month) around the back of the Mansion grounds. Neat, they thought, they shouldn't have too many troubles this month, perhaps if they came back with a different critter? It was time to get Whisper home though. So far, the mansion had not thrown them any curveballs, and Morgan wanted to keep it that way. Whisper was too precious to lose to this place. Perhaps it would be better to take Whisper gardening soon? Would she enjoy that, Morgan wandered?
They walked back around to the front of the mansion grounds, and then out of the outer grounds after checking around for anything of interest. It was time to head home, momentarily.

Morgan returned just before halfway through the month. They'd meant to do more exploration of the mansion in the meantime, but they had been so busy they just hadn't had time. They -made- time when they adopted a puppy from the HAA. For one, they had a month to prove that they would work with the pup, and they felt just as much like proving it to theirself as they did to the HAA. They hadn't felt comfortable going to the HAA from the start, but they decided to do check for new blood, and here they were. The human carries the spooky little pup in their arms as they walked through the outer gate of the mansion. The puppy, surprisingly enough, wasn't asleep. He looked around, his little brown eyes. The human was pleased with him. They put him down tenatively on the ground.
Would it be weird if they named him before they got the rest of the training required done? "Spook." Morgan said, digging for the treat pouch in their pocket.

Now that the tiny puppy was on the dry October grass, he didn't automatically look at Morgan when they called his name. He shivered a bit in the cold, and pushed with all of his legs against the grass, walking a few inches and then laying back down a few times. He was such a small puppy, a lot smaller than Nico had been when Morgan had gotten him. The human finds the treats, and then opens the pouch, fishing one out. "Spook." Morgan says to him, voice soft, but firm. It startled the puppy, who fixed his chocolate gaze on the human now, if only because he was wondering what the human was barking about.
"Good boyo, Spook." Morgan says to him, shivering a little theirself in the autumn air. The dry grass crunched as they bent down to give the roly poly puppy a treat.

The puppy sniffs the treat in Morgan's fingers, and then excitedly grabs it, nipping Morgan with his sharp, but fairly harmless, puppy teeth. "Owie." Morgan says to him, in the tone they usually used to teach critters that are young that biting hurts and not to do it. The sharp noise does startle the puppy, but he has already swallowed the treat by that point. "Spook." Morgan says to him, voice soft again. The puppy pushes against the ground, half-walking to Morgan. He was a very, very young pupper. It was a good thing that Morgan still had houluh with litters, though the pup was already ready to be switched to soft food, like the treats they were using. It seemed to be popular, but still, Morgan could never be too careful.
"Spook." They called again. The puppy pays attention to them, stopping short of coming up on the human's foot. "Good b-boyo." Morgan says, offering another soft treat.

This time, Morgan hands him the treat and then jerks their hand away, to make sure that he doesn't nip them with those sharp little puppy teeth. Then, the human calls out to him again. The puppy is making this very easy, since he gets distracted between his name being called so easily. "Spook!" They said. The little puppy wags his tail and barks back at the bespectacled human, his little bark so quiet that it was barely heard above a quick gust of chilly wind that brushed through at the same moment. "Good boyo." Morgan says to him, giving him a little pet behind the ears, and then a treat. "You're v-very good." They mentioned to him, eyes soft behind their glasses.
"Spook!" They called again, backing up a few feet. The puppy wags his tail, and fixes his chocolate gaze on the human.
