Her weight didn’t have too much impact on the tree. She reached the first branch and went to settle down on it. When she was perched quite comfortably on the branch, Fanged reached up and handed her another fruit treat. Rumi reached down and grabbed the treat from her fingers and stuffed it in her mouth. When she had finished, Fanged asked her to climb again.
“Come on girl! Keep climbing!” she told her.
The Lerrel stared down at her for a moment before preparing herself to climb again. She took a look up ahead to plan her path and decided on the branch that she would climb up to. She moved upwards, skipping over a rather flimsy looking branch before she reached one that was much more stable. She settled down on the branch and peered down at Fanged’s figure which was gradually growing smaller. The woman praised her.

“Good girl, Rumi!” she called up from below her. The Lerrel responded with enthusiastic chatter. “Now keep climbing!” Fanged told her.
The Lerrel responded by looking up to see where she would head to next. The branches were less sturdy the higher she climbed, but there were still some that looked like they would make fine perches. She hooked her claws into the bark and climbed with more ease this time. She was getting acclimated to the pine tree and the presence of tiny needles didn’t bother her now. She skipped past the branches where the needles were browning and the branches looked feeble. There was a strong one a few feet above and she decided to aim for that one. When she reached it, she settled down on top of the needles and peered down at Fanged. The woman was very tiny now and would be difficult to get back to.

“Nicely done, Rumi!” Fanged called out. Her voice was very far away now. Rumi waited for her to tell her to keep climbing, but Fanged appeared content to let her come down now. Now the Lerrel needed to decide how to do that exactly. Fanged expected her to simply climb back down, but Rumi had another trick up her sleeve. She leaned back as she got ready to leap off of the branch. She had small wings and she was eager to start using them. She launched herself into the air, kicking her legs out to get momentum from the branch. She spread her small dove-like wings out of pure instinct. Fanged was still a small shape in the distance and Rumi was determined to reach her. She angled her wings so that they would catch air beneath them. Her body was kept aloft by the appendages, but her descent was difficult to control.

Rumi’s body twisted and turned as she struggled to retain control over her trajectory. She fumbled and started to drop before adjusting her wings and catching the air underneath them once more. When she felt the safety of the air, Rumi relaxed and allowed instinct to take over once again. Angling herself to land towards Fanged was difficult, but she managed to turn her body enough that she was headed in the same direction that the woman stood. With a lot of difficulty, Rumi dived towards Fanged. However, instead of landing on the woman’s shoulder or something elegant like that, she nosedived into a cluster of azalea bushes that were at least better than slamming straight into the ground. Fanged was both impressed and a little bewildered at Rumi’s choice in returning to the ground.
“That was both amazing and a little terrifying!” she chuckled as she spoke. “Why don’t we try that again?”

First, they would need to find another tree to find. It was good to get a different variety of them so that Rumi could become truly accustomed to climbing the different kinds. After a bit of a walk, they found themselves beneath a birch tree. It was rather skinny and the branches equally so, but it should be enough to hold Rumi’s weight. After all, the Lerrel was lithe and made for gliding.
“Okay Rumi, climb!” Fanged gave her the command.
Rumi didn’t need much prompting to approach the tree. She had a natural sense of curiosity and her species was mostly made for climbing. She moved swiftly, hooking her claws into the bark with ease as she began to climb up. She settled down in one of the lower branches of the trees and looked down at Fanged to see if she should keep going. First, the woman rewarded her with a treat while she could still reach the Lerrel.

Rumi leaned down from the branch and accepted the treat that Fanged gave her. She ate quickly and returned her focus back towards the birch tree. It wasn’t quite as tall as the pine tree, but its height was nothing to sneeze at.
“Keep climbing, Rumi!” Fanged called up to her.
The Lerrel obliged by swinging her right arm outwards and gripping the bark with her claws. She moved across the bark easily, her claws only catching a few times in the areas where the trunk was gnarled with prior damage. When she regained her grip, she sidled over to rest on one of the sturdier looking branches. She peered down cautiously at Fanged. The woman gave her a thumbs up and called out encouragement.
“Excellent work so far, girl! Keep climbing!”
By now, Rumi had picked up on what the word climb meant. She looked up the tree, spotting the next branch she would aim for.

She climbed upwards. Her claws clacked against the bark, though Fanged was too far away to hear it. When the wind was too strong, Rumi hunkered down against the tree trunk and buried her claws deep within the bark. She then waited for the wind to stop before continuing her climb. Rumi was more agile as she climbed now. She spared a quick glance at the ground, watching Fanged’s face carefully for any indication that the woman would have her stop. When there was no indication that she was expected to pause her ascent, Rumi continued to climb. She was growing used to being up high now. It helped that she had wings to save her if she ever fell again. The bark was familiar underneath the touch of her claws. Figuring out which areas were best to grip wasn’t too difficult for her and Rumi was quickly finding herself adapting to take the quickest routes.

Rumi was nearing the top of the tree. She knew when she reached it, she would have to stop climbing. She risked a glance down at Fanged and was relieved to see the woman still standing there watching her.
“Nicely done Rumi! Keep climbing until you reach the top!” Fanged called up to her.
The tree was flimsier near the top and even with Rumi’s light weight, she still needed to balance carefully against the swaying surface. The more she climbed, the less afraid she became of the thinner branches. She knew not to stay on them too long, moving quickly before they could bend too much underneath her body. With a bit of extra effort, Rumi managed to haul herself up as high as she could climb. She didn’t want to stay up there too long, but she awaited further command from Fanged. Thankfully she could still see her from this distance.

Fanged took out the treat capsule and waved the object temptingly towards Rumi. She then called out the Lerrel’s name to capture her attention.
“Rumi! Look I have treats!” she yelled up at her.
The enticement worked. Rumi immediately wanted to go down and meet Fanged for a treat. She needed to figure out how to do that in the quickest amount of time possible, however. She flapped her small, dove-like wings for a moment before deciding ultimately, that she did indeed want to use them. She got herself into a good position for takeoff. She was higher up than she had been on her last attempt, but that didn’t frighten her as it might have others. With an excited chirp, she launched herself from the tree and tumbled through the air. After a few moments, Rumi managed to position her wings correctly so that they lifted her body into the air.

Gliding came to her quite naturally, but it still took some testing to figure out the optimal techniques. Rumi rather enjoyed the feeling of the air moving underneath her small wings. She tilted her body to gain more lift and beamed when she realized her movements were actually working. Her body tumbled a bit and it took her some extra caution to keep herself upright. Rumi narrowed her eyes as she tried to figure out if she was still on course to make it towards her owner. The woman was rapidly growing larger in her periphery as Rumi glided towards the ground. Controlling where she wanted to go was still a bit tricky. She suddenly plummeted down as she tried to angle herself to reach Fanged. Before she could crash land, the woman reached out and caught Rumi’s lithe body.
“Nicely done, girl!” she praised. “We’ll need to work on the landing though!”

Rumi wiggled in her arms but calmed down when Fanged offered her a treat. She accepted happily and shoved the treat quickly in her mouth. When she was finished, the woman had them work on their training some more. It didn’t take long for the Lerrel to scale the length of a nearby pine tree. While Rumi practiced her gliding, Fanged decided to look around the garden a bit more. She kept a close eye on Rumi, making sure she didn’t get into too much trouble as she continued their training. The garden was blooming steadily as the summer months had come upon them. She only startled slightly when Rumi managed to land on her shoulder.
“Hi there, girl!” she greeted her happily.
Rumi chattered away as she crawled down her arm and then back up. The Lerrel was energetic even after all the time she had spent learning how to glide.

Now that Rumi had sufficiently learned to glide, they could take some time to truly learn how to garden. Rumi climbed down her arm and rocketed off to the ground. She went off a bit on her own to explore and Fanged decided that she would do the same. Summer in the gardens felt serene. Plants were out in full bloom and many trees were full with fruit. She had never been all that great at climbing trees, but she had learned in order to teach Rumi how to do it. Now that the Lerrel was quite adept at it, she wanted to get better as well. She approached a cherry tree that was brimming with overripe cherries. She wanted to taste one, but most of the branches were well out of reach from the ground. She rubbed her palms together in preparation. Most climbing involved the use of chalk, but she didn’t have any on hand.

She angled herself so that she could catch a grip on one of the lower branches. Rumi perked up her head at the noise. She quicky abandoned what she had been doing and rush over to join Fanged as she climbed the tree. Fanged kept her concentration even as Rumi chattered excitedly around her. She inhaled a deep breath to keep herself calm as she placed her palms onto the sturdiest branch that she could see. A thrill pounded through her chest as she began to haul herself up. Rumi watched her almost pitifully. Fanged’s movements were sluggish when compared to the Lerrel. Rumi chattered encouragement at her as she joined the woman on the branch. Fanged huffed for a moment. Hauling herself up was not as easy as it used to be. She was starting to think she would never fully gain that strength again. She would have to manage with what she already had.
