Ashe was not a morning person. Perhaps early birds got the worm, but since he sometimes used worms to fish and already had the worms, then he didn't need to get up early to catch more. He had found out about a new fishing area, open to the public now, and eagerly went to explore it. Once he woke up past noon, of course. The sun was warm, even if the air had a chill to it. Clear sky. Perfect for fishing. Ashe left Zanarkand with Inyala on his shoulder, his fishing gear either slung over his back or in a case he carried. He made a quick stop by the aquarium to collect his Seryn, then headed to the River Bend. When he got there, he saw it wasn't exactly new, it fed into the Docks and probably came from the Canyons far off, where Santiago and the other Draconics lived. So maybe people had just 'discovered' it here and started to come...Either way, Ashe was here, and was eager to get to work. It would be weird fishing without a dragon by his side, though a fish might be fun too.
He picked his spot, got Selene settled in the water, then started to prep his fishing pole, with Inyala's help.

(Above plot paused, new pet)
What had been intended to be a wonderful time of camping out with his Seryn and Inyala, had turned into a rush home before they could catch anything. Now, Ashe had been a busy man and it had been a couple of months before he could make his return. So there he was, also with the bright idea to bring another fish-like creature with him, but this time he’d left even Inyala at home.
But he really wanted to bond alone with this special baby. He held a gorgeous black and green egg, carefully cradled against his body. He’d been taking it everywhere with him lately, whenever he had to run to the store or to the Keep or even just sitting at home. He wasn’t sure- was he supposed to keep it warm? Heat lamp? Body heat? So he’d tried using a blanket when he could. But it felt warm and alive… And...was it shaking? He stopped, standing on the bank of the river, watching cracks form on his egg.

Watching the cracks form, he wished Inyala was here with him. She was his other half now, almost always there. He’d cast a simple spell that allowed them to be without each other for a while, with the orders to ‘blink’ back to Ashe periodically. He knew his heart wouldn’t be able to take the strain of separation any longer than he absolutely needed to, let alone hers. So he didn’t know where she was or what she was doing, but he did know she would be upset with him when their baby hatched without her!
Barely thinking straight, in the excited panic of a new parent, he stooped and set the egg in the water. He knew a fish would come from the egg, and he knew the fish would need water, even if the magical surprise of it growing into a dragon was already spoiled for Ashe. And then, he saw the wriggling body, the scales covering the body, the intelligent bright eye... And out came a fish!

The fish squirmed and splashed the rest of the way into the water, quickly disappearing under the surface. Ashe squinted and leaned forward, trying to see it, but it appeared to be black with green streaks, harder to see against the darker plant matter down in the deeper areas. Ashe groaned and kicked himself, realizing he should have made an area for it to hatch in that would be safe and contained. What if he lost his fish as it swam too far? What if he accidentally hooked it while he was trying to fish? He thought of several more what ifs, including a wild PHIL catching it like a salmon, and each one was worse.
But then he saw his little fish again, and it seemed to be staying close by… He hoped this wasn’t just coincidence or simple curiosity on the fish’s part. He hoped it was due to loyalty, or a bond. He slowly, so as not to scare it, put his fingers into the water and swirled them around.

Slowly, the fish inched closer. It was definitely fixated on Ashe’s finger, curious and interested, but cautious to approach the moving object. The fish seemed to be chill and not scared of Ashe, and who could blame a newly hatched thing for not being completely confident yet? While he kept an eye on the fish here, he also cast around for something to use to keep his baby close to him while he did some fishing. He hadn’t planned on it hatching right here and right now! He did happen to see, a little ways off, some boulders that blocked the flow, and if he added a few more rocks, he could make a little circle to keep the fish in. He got to work, reaching in and gently, with his hand, shooing the tat lung toward the corral. The baby fish was nervous of his whole hand in there, and swam away as planned. With some quick movements and planning on Ashe’s part, the fish was corralled, the rocks were planted, and he was wet to his thighs.

Ashe felt a little better and more accomplished, having made sure his baby wouldn’t disappear on him. He had high hopes for this guy, or gal, here. He wasn’t sure how he would be able to tell the gender until it grew up and it became more, ah, obvious. Assuming it became obvious. He didn’t think a regal tat lung would enjoy Ashe poking around their private areas. He cleared his throat and gave his head a shake, not wanting to continue down that path of thought. He made sure the tat lung was happily swimming around its new enclosure, then he set about getting the fishing gear set up and ready to go. He was here for a reason, after all. A recent trade nearly wiped him out of the fish he had and that included at the aquarium. So here he was, fishing pole baited and set between two rocks. He would hear the reel going if something bit, he was sure. Meanwhile, he sat with the pole and near the pool, tapping his fingers on the surface of the water.

The fish was curious and came up to the surface to check the fingers out as they tapped on the water, making tiny splashes. It was almost like the water bugs that skated across the surface, Ashe mused, which would probably cause an instinctual response from the baby fish. He hoped it didn’t try to eat his fingers. Though that probably wouldn’t hurt and wouldn’t be the worst case scenario, it might even tickle! The fish did indeed come to his fingers, but instead of nibbling first, it bumped the fingers with its head, testing it out. When it didn’t hurt, it was then that the fish started to nibble a little bit, just softly. Ashe wiggled his fingers enticingly, then moved them to the side. To his surprise, the fish followed almost immediately. Hm… Maybe he could get some quick training in between fishing catches. It was worth a shot, anyway. ”Alright, fishy, I want you to come when I call you. I’ll do this.” He tapped the surface of the water in another area.

The fish went over to his fingers with little hesitation. Right now, it was out of curiosity. But later, it might gain its own independence and not need to be around Ashe at all times, and it was then that Ashe would need to have this command down pact. So when the fish came to Ashe’s fingers, he reached into his pocket for some little fish food pellets. He kept these on hand for when he caught fish that he wanted to take home safely; he wanted them to be fed and comfortable, so he brought his own stuff. Who would have thought he’d be using it on a magical baby fish? But the baby seemed to like it and eagerly gobbled up the pellets as he popped them into the water. ”Alright, how about over here?” Ashe said out loud, talking to himself. Sometimes it felt like he made more of an impact when he did it that way. He tickled the water on the other side of the containment area.

While Ashe was moving to tap his fingers over here, and over there, getting the fish to follow him each time, he ended up acquiring a new bit of fashion. A plant of some sort had caught on his pant leg and gone for a ride with him, he had no idea how long it had been there! But when he noticed it, it was still wet whereas his pants were drying, so maybe not that long. He set it aside, somewhere close to his stuff but in the shade so it wouldn’t dry out. Maybe he could replant it in an aquarium.
He fed the tat lung a piece of food each time it came to him. It was already interested in the tap taps of his fingers, and now it was doubly interested with the promise of food. He seemed to have the tat lung swimming in laps around the little pool he’d created in no time. But how would the tat lung respond without the treats, now that it was used to getting them? Ashe was about to find out.

Ashe wiggled his fingers in the water and the tat lung left the rock it was looking at to go to him. He didn’t feed him a treat, though he did use verbal praise - it was unknown to Ashe as to whether or not the fish could hear him or not. But he said it anyway. ”Good fishy! Good baby fish.” And as he said it, he became acutely aware that he needed to name this thing…
The fish looked a bit confused and swam around, looking for a pellet that maybe made its way past it and sunk down, or floated away. But no, it didn’t find anything, and it quickly zoomed back to the surface as if to say hey you forgot something!
Instead of giving in and handing a treat over to the demanding baby, ashe tapped his fingers on another part of the water’s surface, signaling for the baby to come. And it did, with very little hesitation, maybe thinking ‘this time I’ll get two!’

Ashe didn't give the fish two treats, but he did reward it for its attention. The fish zoomed around, suddenly overcome with a bunch of energy. Ashe let it wear some of that energy down before he tried again, tapping his fingers on a different part of the water. The fish stilled, feeling the ripples in the water but unsure of the direction it was being called. If it was even being called. It looked up to the surface and located the human's face, knowing that to be where it needed to go, as close to the human as possible. It was being called. An odd way to be called, for sure, but it was starting to pick up on these things. It went to the surface, right under the tapping fingers, and saw the human's face light up when he saw it. "Good job, little fishie!" Ashe praised it, and tossed it another treat. The fish swam around and around, then returned to Ashe, waiting to see what was next.

'What was next' wasn't going to be the fish's most favorite time, after all. Ashe ran through this training a few more times, each time not giving it a treat but instead verbal praise or a pat on the smooth, scaley head. The fish appeared confused by this, sticking close to the surface where Ashe was, as if protesting and asking 'hey, did you forget something?' Ashe tried to explain verbally, since he knew enough about Tat-Lung to know that this was one smart fish. "I can't give you a treat every time you come when I call... I gotta make sure you know the command itself, not just the treat. We'll be doing different things, you know, and you can't just do the same thing over and over for each..." But his explanations fell on deaf ears. To keep the fish from getting too frustrated, he peppered treats throughout the rest of the training for this word. Treat, no treats for several successful attempts, and then another treat... just to entice the fish to continue on.
