Finding a nice fishing spot was proving more difficult than she thought, as it turned out. The river was packed today with other people and their pets, and Fiera didn’t want her little scrap of an amphadron to get hurt by some other critter’s roughhousing, so they’d have to keep moving. Not to mention the prospects of fishing here were terrible. There was nowhere deep enough for her to cast a line in, and the places that were closest to that were already crowded with the dozens of other fishers. She would just have to wait and keep an eye thoroughly peeled for a spot that wasn’t clogged with rabble rousers. She curled a lip disdainfully at a fisherman on the opposite bank that gave her a friendly wave. How dare they try to associate with her after thoroughly ruining her day. The gall of some people, really.

Plip. Plip. Plip.
Was that rain? Oh great. It didn't seem that cloudy this morning, but the sky is full of dark clouds swollen with precipitation. Slowly the drops fall at first, but they quickly pick up speed. Before too long, it's a full on downpour, and there aren't many places to hide in the canyons.
If that wasn't bad enough, the ground around the river turns into a sludgy muck. It's hard to navigate, sucking at the feet of all those who try to step in it.

As Fiera walked however, the sky continued to darken overhead. The weather report had been nice today, but it was starting to look like that weatherman, no matter how attractive on Fiera’s screen, had actually been a massive liar the whole time. “Let’s hope we find some place nice soon, Ophelia…” She said mostly to herself. The amphadron would be completely fine of course, considering that she was completely aquatic. A little rain wouldn’t hurt her, but it would definitely have a negative effect on Fiera. Like most cats, the humanish wasn’t a fan of water… well, water that she didn’t consent to getting on her. She had become mostly used to having to splash around in the river if she wanted fish. She couldn’t tell when it was going to rain based only on the sky, but she had the feeling she should find shelter sometime sooner rather than later.

As a result she started walking a little faster, and Ophelia had to put on another burst of speed to catch up. She heard an irritated clicking coming from the amphadron as she walked. “Oh come on, you need the exercise.” Fiera said matter of factly and kept forging ahead. Off to the side, a small rivulet of water cut through some rockier cliffs. It would be a bit difficult for Fiera to traverse considering how close the cliffs those were to each other, but she had the feeling that Ophelia would be fine. The water was shallow but the amphadron was an amphibian anyway. So long as her skin stayed wet, it would be fine if she did more flopping than swimming. She turned into the narrow channel and Ophelia swirled around in the water for a bit, perhaps nervously, before swimming toward it as well and following her.

It was indeed pretty hard to maneuver in here. The walls were close together and the stream was little more than a trickle, but to Fiera’s relief there were a few outcroppings overhead that could make the gulley be considered a tunnel or cave in a pinch, and thus could also be considered shelter as well. Ophelia seemed a little bit grumpy with the shallowness of the water but, well, she would just have to suck it up. Sure enough, Fiera began to feel small drops landing on her within a few minutes. The rain had begun. Right now, she had to admit it felt somewhat refreshing. They were in the pits of summer now, and she only had to step foot outside to become drenched in her own sweat, which was pretty unpleasant as far as being drenched in things went. The clouds coming in overhead were welcomed at first.

Fiera knew that those little drops were only a prelude to more rain however, and she began to hustle faster as the pace of the droplets picked up. She found herself less walking at a steady pace now and more darting between outcroppings and overhangs, trying to shield herself from the rain. It wouldn’t take much for her to go from “refreshed” to “sopping wet” after all, and her long fur made her tail take forever to dry. Normally she held it above the water while fishing, but right now she had it curled tightly around her legs, trying to avoid the worst. She hissed as a gout of water began pouring from over top of her current hiding place and quickly dodged ahead, catching up to Ophelia who was now making steady progress down this stream. In fact, Fiera was now moving even more slowly than her amphadron.

The rivulet was quickly growing from that to… well, a proper stream, wasn’t it. Fiera realized that while the rain had only just started, it was landing on all parts of the river equally, raising the water level everywhere. Thus, this tiny gulch was suddenly getting a lot more water than it usually had. What was this called again? A flash flood? Fiera found her footing getting more and more unsteady and had to slow down even further to make sure she didn’t slip and fall. Suddenly, her choice of hiding spot was seeming a little less well planned than when she entered the gulley. She hoped that the rain stopped before the water rose too high for her to remian standing… or before she was able to find a spot where she could step out of here. The longer she stayed, the more unsafe it was going to get.

Unfortunately, it looked like the decision was going to be made for her. As she glanced up, she realized that Ophelia was struggling just as much as she was, but for a different reason. Instead of struggling to remain moving in extremely shallow water like before, Ophelia was now trying (and somewhat failing) very hard to stay with Fiera instead of being washed downstream. As she watched though, the increasing force of the current slammed the moss amphadron again and again, forcing her further and further downstream. “Oh, crap.” Fiera said, hoisting up her catch bucket. “Hang on Ophelia, I’ll get you.” She said with a groan, prying off the lid. As she did however, another particularly strong gush flooded through the gulley, forcing Fiera to brace herself against the cliff wall to avoid being knocked over by the water which was now up to the middle of her calf.

When she looked up… Ophelia was nowhere to be seen. “...Ophie?” Fiera called hesitantly, her heart sinking. Ophelia never responded to that nickname, but she was praying that now would be when she decided to start. But sure enough, the amphadron didn’t resurface. “Oh, crap.” Fiera said, slapping the lid back on and marching through the water as fast as she dared. On the bright side, she knew that it was impossible for Ophelia to drown. She was a baby amphibian after all, it was literally impossible for her to die if she didn’t resurface. No, Fiera’s main concern was that she was tiny. If this rivulet met up with a larger streambed or a river, Fiera was pretty much hosed in terms of ever finding her again, and she doubted that the amphadron would do well on her own all the way out here in the wilderness of the river bend.

As a result, Fiera had to hustle to catch up… but that was difficult considering that she was trying to avoid getting caught in the current as well. The rain seemed to have let up for the time being and was now the smallest mist from above (to Fiera’s great relief as her tail was starting to hurt from being held up so high), but the gulch was still just as narrow and gushing water around Fiera’s legs. She had just enough room to brace herself on either side, but that meant that it was slow going as she used the cliff walls as “natural handrails”. “I’m still coming, Ophelia!” She called half-reassuringly. “...Slowly!” She groaned as another gush threatened to knock her off her feet. Finally, she began to hear a change in the flow of water and desperately began to hope that she was coming up to a slower area where Ophelia might have stopped.

As she drew closer to the source of the noise however, Fiera realized that it was no widening in the stream. It was a waterfall. “...Crap.” Fiera said quietly and hurried as fast as she dared. Thankfully, the gulley finally widened enough at the end that she could climb out of the water and peer off to see where it all was going. To her relief, the stream fell from the lip of the waterfall into what looked like a clear, deep pool beneath. From the pool, several smaller streams branched off, dribbling further down the slope instead of gushing. It was a calm in the storm, and one that Ophelia and Fiera desperately needed. Speaking of Ophelia, Fiera peeled her eyes for her, hoping that the amphadron would know well enough to stay put here instead of wandering off down one of the other streams coming off from the pool.

Sure enough, her eyes managed to catch a bright flash of green and brown. “Ophelia!” Fiera called down to the water, and a familiar face popped out of the pool, giving her a withering look that was becoming the amphadron’s default by this point. “There you are! Just stay put, ok?” Fiera said before glancing to either side, looking for a way to clamber down the bank. She had to yank the catch bucket out and away from the water for a bit until she found a slope gentle enough to get down without breaking her neck, but once she was on the pool’s level, the ground levelled out enough that it was a relatively simple walk back to where Ophelia was. The amphadron swam over to her the moment she came within view, and Fiera crouched down to stroke the young critter’s head. “Scary, huh? No need to worry though dear, I always come back.”

A giant wave makes it's way down the river, splashing and tearing everything in it's path. Yikes, your Amphadron is caught in it! Better run and catch her!

Ophelia touched her hand for a moment, but there was no affection in the gesture like there usually was for other pets. The amphadron really did have a blank, flat sort of personality to her, unmarred by anything like “loyalty”. Fiera was hoping that would change in the future, but for now she just had to work with what Ophelia was offering her. After a moment of hanging around Fiera (and the humanish starting to get her fishing equipment out), Ophelia seemed to decide to go exploring and began swimming around the pool some more. Fiera glanced up at her every so often, but the amphadron seemed to be enjoying the prospect of taking a rest after her traumatizing little adventure when she was swept down the stream. Hopefully Fiera would get a moment to take a load off as well- literally, considering the volume of fishing equipment she had.

She had managed to unstrap a fishing rod and set down her bag when Ophelia began drawing nearer and nearer to the shallow outpourings from the pool. “Hey, be careful over there!” Fiera said. The current wasn’t nearly as strong in the pool as it had been above the waterfall, but those outgoing streams still had a powerful pull to them if one got too close due to the flash flood. While the force of the rain’s waters had fallen off for the most part, the extra volume was still far from running off. “Ophelia, how about you come back here?” Fiera said, pausing in getting her things out after the amphadron swam close to yet another dangerously close rivulet. She sighed to herself wearily as she remembered that she hadn’t taught the amphadron ‘come’ yet however, only her name and ‘no’. The problems of skimping on one’s obedience training!
