She was too bored staying here the whole time, how did trees DO it? No wonder nyssa learned to walk around, this was absolutely awful, she refused to stay in just one place any longer.
Kadin sighed and they moved on. At one point, they came across a patch of grass and when Alba moved through it, a bunch of insects took to the wing, flying right across her face and startling her. THIS time she finally made more noise! She gave a started small roar, backing up a few steps, and Kadin was quick to say, “Roar! Good roar!” And give her a treat for it. Alba accepted the treat quickly enough, but clearly she had no idea what it was for. Kadin didn’t care. Now they were off. Apparently Alba COULD be startled and all it took was some bugs flying in her face to do it. Kadin could work with that. He could make it happen. He kept them walking through that same field, praising Alba every time she made a noise over a grumble.
She quickly shook off all the dirty on her body and looked around, wondering what she should do. She could still get energy from the sun.

While she was walking around, that is. So it wasn’t like she had any limits or anything on where she could go. She should really find something better to do with her time than just wandering around doing nothing, but she didn’t feel like doing all of the work here in the gardens when she wanted to wait for her family to be here first!
He was hoping that she’d eventually pick up what he was rewarding her for, but figured that, just like with all other things, Alba would get to it on her own time. There were a couple more times when bugs or small creatures or birds would break cover as Alba walked through. Whenever she roared in surprise, Kadin would praise her, say “roar”, and give her a treat for it. Since she was getting treats for being loud, pretty soon she picked up on the face that, you know. If she was loud she’d get treats for it. So she started getting louder and louder and Kadin would praise her and give her a treat every damn time. He was creating a monster, he was realizing this. And yet here he was.

But if it got across what he wanted her to learn he couldn’t bring himself to regret it.
With a snort, Meissa wandered away from the patch of dirt she’d buried herself in. The more she wandered, the louder some noise came from the direction she was pretty sure the human and thundergug had gone in. Curious, she followed the should until it started to get so loud that she didn’t want to get any close! What were they DOING? Fighting??? It certainly sounded like it! Or something worse, even, she couldn’t tell from over here.
They kept up in much this same fashion for a while. Kadin would follow Alba around, she’d find something that startled her or, as time went on, something that just annoyed her, and she’d roar about it. Kadin would say “roar”, praise her, and give her a treat for making all that noise. His neighbors were probably going to kill him about this, but he couldn’t really bring himself to care now that Alba was actually making some noise and it seemed like they were making some progress. So he just kept following her around and praising her and encouraging her.

He wanted her to make as much noise as she felt like she wanted to make, causing a huge racket and even more birds to fly away from their gardens the more this went on.
Man she really wished she didn’t have ears right now. All of this noise was sure to scare away literally anything that wanted to make the gardens their home. It seemed that something like that wasn’t the human’s concern, one supposed, since he seemed to be encouraging all of the noise. Meissa got a little bit closer once she got used to it, watching while the human followed around the thundergug and just kept trying to make it roar.
Maybe he should eventually get to the part of this where she actually roared when he told her to. Kadin started to try and anticipate when she would roar and say the command word before she did it on her own. This way, he could get used to her roaring after he said the word. And now, he would only give her a treat after she roared when he said the word first. This confused Alba, at first. She was roaring a lot, but only got a treat some of the time.

Kadin would walk behind her, see that she was going to start roaring at something she’d been roaring at before, say “Roar!”, wait until she actually roared, then say “Roar!” again, praise her, and give her a treat. But sometimes she roared at something randomly and didn’t get a treat for it!
This is why they needed other plant creatures around here. They wouldn’t do something as weird as this and make so much dang noise. A garden was supposed to be peaceful! Somewhere you could walk around and hear insects buzzing and birds singing, or something like that. Right now all you could hear were regular bellows from the thundergug. Meissa snorted and wondered if she should do something about it.
She didn’t like not getting a treat for things. She told Kadin this, too, loudly, but she didn’t get a treat for that, either. With a snort, Alba kept walking around, and Kadin kept doing the same thing. When he anticipated her roars correctly and said the word before she roared, she got a treat. When she was roaring randomly, she did not get a treat. Alba tolerated this for a while. Just a while.

But eventually she snorted in frustration, turned around to face Kadin, and ROARED. She. Did not get a treat for that. Kadin just stood there, patiently, waiting for her to move on. Alba grumbled. Even though she was bigger, she wasn’t more stubborn than the human was, and she was already getting used to listening to him. With another grumble, she turned away.
At least the thundergug seemed as annoyed with the human at times as Meissa was. She kept watching for a while longer, but even that got boring, eventually. Perhaps she should go back to looking for stuff for the human to take home. Maybe if he better saw how useful the gardens were for finding stuff he’d respect them better and stop pulling bullshit like this. If that didn’t work, well… She’d come up with something else.
Now it was time for fine tuning. Kadin started to tell Alba to roar even when it didn’t look like she was going to do it on her own. Of course, this did not go over well at first and she ignored him. But now she wasn’t getting any treats at all whenever she roared randomly and she WANTED treats.

She couldn’t out stubborn her own stomach. So, eventually, she started paying more attention. When Kadin said the word, she started trying to see if roaring worked to get her a treat since that was what had worked before. And wouldn’t you know it? It did! When she roared because the human told her to roar, she got a treat! Once that clicked for Alba, all bets were off. Every time the human said the word she was roaring her heart out for a treat. When she just grumbled she didn’t get a treat so she HAD to roar instead! Kadin kept up with this practice with her until he was satisfied that she was going to follow the command every time.
It was a large place. She was sure they could find a spot in the gardens that wouldn’t be quite as loud, even if he was during stupid things like making thundergugs roar all the time. With a huff, Meissa moved away from all of the loud noise and started to wander in different parts of the garden. She kept looking and looking for a spot that was still on the same property, but she couldn’t hear the thundergug quite as well.

Now that Elk was done with all the training that he needed it was time to work on one of the other pups. Kadin decided that next he was going to work on herd with Pepper. And since Tex was there he might as well teach Tex to herd as well. For this you wanted the pups to be able to herd different creatures to the area that he wanted them in. So what he did is he started by bringing in some small painter equillion so that there was nothing too intimidating, something that they will be able to practice on without getting hurt. And since the painters are trained anyway you would also be able to direct them to where he wanted them to go instead of worrying about them accidentally hurting the pups. Luckily Levtr was pretty chill about this. So Kadin started with having the pups just around the painter. He had them sniff at his legs and his tail just really walk all around him to get used to what they were working with. Levtr tolerated this with a snort but also acceptance. Luckily he was pretty used to dealing with puppies anyway so when he was used to dealing with other young creatures. He wasn't particularly pleased with his roll, but he would accept it since the human was here to make sure that nothing bad happened anyway. The worst that could happen was that the puppies were annoying and he was expecting that anyway.

He was fine with just generally being annoyed by them. This was fine. All in a day’s work. Kadin eventually had the pups go over to Levtr and walk around him, getting them used to him and used different words to kind of show where he wanted them to go. He needed the pups to know what they were supposed to be doing when they were herding, so he used different signals to show the pups when he wanted them while he was leading him around the equillion. He was showing them that he would use a different signal when he wanted it to go to the left side or the right side, get them to back off or get them to go forward. He was trying to keep the pups attention with this. The pups were running around Levtr, very excited and not paying much attention to Kadin. They’d much rather just watch the equillion with fascination as he let them get used to the painter. They obviously had no idea what was going on but they were more than happy to interact with something that was not houluh. Kadin had the painter walk back and forth and continue demonstrating to the houluh what he wanted them to do once he was trying to get them to herd him. Levtr continued to tolerate all of this with untold patience, which was really very impressive considering how all over the place that the puppies were while Kadin was with them.

But you figured that they wouldn't get it until he actually got started for real instead of just this introductory showing them the ropes. Kadin continued to lead them through the set up, showing them the basic commands and continuing to get them used to the painter and the area. He made sure that Pepper and Tex were secure on their leashes so that they couldn’t get away and had to continue going through the motions with him. He continued to walk the houluh over and told them the commands to try and herd the painter around. He directed them towards the painter and continued to try to keep their focus on both him and the equillion at the same time, following his commands for how to herd the painter around. This was easy with them on a leash since he could just lead them where he wanted them to go. Levtr looked up and didn't seem particularly impressed with whatever was going on while the human and houluh are approaching him. Since Levtr wasn't moving, Kadin kind of encouraged dogs to get more intense to try and get more into it to try to get him to start moving. Levtr was used to living with tainteds, however, so it would take a lot more than a barking puppy to really get him to move around if he didn't feel like it. Instead, he just continued to watch them with a bored expression, occasionally putting his head down to eat some grass. Classic.

Kadin continued to walk around houluh around, trying to get them to actually engage with the painter and to try and herd him in the right direction. They stared at the painter, unsure because of his attitude, but Kadin kept encouraging them so they moved over to their ends of their leashes to try and interact. Levtr just snorted at them and swished his tail, but he didn’t really react beyond that. Still, Kadin kept encouraging the houluh to pester him in order to try and get him to move… and be herded. With their combined efforts, he eventually shook his head and he started moving slowly in the direction that the human and the houluh trying to herd him in. Kadin had set up a nearby post and was directing the houluh to try and get him over there so LEvtr could be successfully “herded” and “tied” to the post. That was where they wanted him to be. The houluh at least seemed very excited once the painter finally started moving. They tugged on the leash to try to go after him, barely listening as Kadin tried to give commands to lead them through the process of herding the painter. Slowly but surely, Levtr was moving in the right direction. He didn't still look particularly impressed and was probably moving for Kadin more than he was moving for the actual houluh. But that was why KAdin had chosen him for this, after all, he had some training and would respond to him. Herd: 4 Level Tracking: 4/5

It was good that he started move and good that Kadin had them on a leash because he didn’t want them to chase after Levtr like crazy like they seemed as if they wanted to. Kadin had them stay close but not too close, wanting them to still have a respectful distance from Levtr in case he did decide to kick one of them forgetting to close to him. After all, they were using Levtr to practice, but this herding training didn't necessarily mean that they would always be tracking and hurting down tolerant painters. So Kadin led them all the way over to post by using the leashes and leading the whole thing himself. Once Levtr was by the post Kadin tied Levtr to it and told the pups (and the equillion), “Good job good job!” He praised them all and gave them treats for sort of following with what he wanted. They were very excited about everything that was going on even if they had no idea what was really happening, at least they had enthusiasm? He could use that to get them do what he actually wanted them to do. After he finished getting Levtr tied up he decided to try again and lead them through it once again so that they can continue to get an idea what he wanted to do before he actually asked them of it on their own. Levtr would be pleased to be free again, at least, and wouldn't mind being able to graze some more.

So Kadin untied Levtr again and patted him on the side, letting him wander off and do whatever he wanted to do. Eat grass, wander around, explore the area. Whatever he wanted. He made sure that both pups were secure on their leashes again and after Levtr was a good distance away from them he started saying “herd ‘em up” and once more led them over to where the painter was again. While he was leading them towards the painter, he ran through different signals that he’d use for them in a real herding experience. He tried different signals for going left, right, forward, backing up, and the like, all about how he wanted them to approach the painter. They weren’t paying a ton of attention, of course, but when they did willingly seem to follow along he praised them and gave them treats for it. They weren’t doing great with it, but this time he gave the pups a little bit more slack to see how well they were actually listening. When they were going the wrong way, trying to go after the painter and lead him in the wrong direction, he gently corrected them with the leash and with command words for going right, left or whichever direction he needed them to go in to get them back on track. Levtr watched all this while casually eating some grass and waiting for something more interesting to happen. This was all really very boring from the test subject's perspective.
