Renathan knows not to startle the creature. It wouldn't help him get any closer to it to see if he had caught it at just the right time to catch the berries (provided the creature could actually provide them; he wasn't entirely convinced of that yet), and in fact it would probably just run the creature off and back into the stand of trees. In fact, it might keep the creature from coming around him at all in the future- and that wouldn't be good for the long run. Making a skittish creature even more skittish would be the worst idea possible... Especially since they were rare enough that the russet mammalian would not able to replace him most likely at all.
Instead, Renathan watches as the creature quickly begins to eat the offered treat. It was odd, the strangely humanlike mannerisms that the creature had when eating. It certainly put the mammalian off a bit to watch it.

Upon purchasing the creature, Renathan had been told that Larka was apparently female. He wasn't sure exactly how to easily tell the supposed gender one way or another on a plant creature, even for all of his prior work in gardening. He wasn't entirely sure why the species would be referred to such gendered monikers as 'King' of anything if there were supposed females in the species. What an odd quirk of the common tongue! He thought of this, even while keeping his eyes on the beast- mostly because he thought that it was quite gross that the creature was so humanlike. Perhaps with any luck he'd get over it at some point. He'd have to, if he wished to try to get close enough to snag any of those berries for himself (provided there were any out there at all).
Now that the creature had gotten done eating the treat, the russet mammalian reached into the pouch for another.

He took one of the treats into his palm, and then he rolled it over to look at it. Whenever it seemed that the creature was snuffling around for another treat, he quietly tosses another just a bit away from it to keep from startling the King of Evergreen. He didn't want to startle the little monster, not at all. Instead, he wanted to entice it closer- so the treat had been purposefully thrown just a little closer this time. With any luck, he'd do this a few times and perhaps he'd be close enough to see if the beast was still producing berries, if it even had in the first place. He knew quite a bit about the berry sets themselves, since he had several times worked with the process to make nodes, but he had not obtained any of the berries from his own creature not once before. He'd always procured them from elsewhere.

Because he had not had any sets of berries procured from his own animal (plant animal- planimal?) before, he most certainly had no idea if his creature could at all produce the berries. Did gender of the animal have anything to do with it? Usually it was the females of any species that produced berries, so he did hope that Larka being 'female' have him a higher chance of such. Though he did sincerely doubt it. None of the books he'd read about the subject had told him anything about there being a specific gender of King of Evergreen to look out for; and in fact it didn't even talk about genders at all. He watches as the creature sniffs, and seems to find the direction that the treat was thrown in. He watches as the creature meanders its way over to where the next treat is. If the creature was afraid of him, it didn't seem to show any proof of it.

That was most likely a good thing, at least Renathan hoped it was. There was always the chance that the creature had simply not seen him at all, and in that case perhaps that was also good. The creature locates the treat and begins to eat it after grasping it with strange fingers in much the same way that she did earlier. Renathan tries not to watch too closely this time. It was still very unsettling, but he needed to try to get over the 'gross' sensation that had to do with it. After a little bit, the creature finishes the treat and then moves forward again, sniffling at the ground. Renathan reaches for another of the treats and rolls it in his palm before tossing it another bit closer to the gazebo. The idea was to get the creature close enough to adequately observe where the berries were grown from.

From what Renathan had been told, the species grew their berries from the bases of their tail's tips. He was trying to catch a glimpse of where the berries were on the creature's tail- but the beast was keeping its tail much closer to itself than would allow him to see. So he continued with his plan to bring it closer to the gazebo from which he watched it- so that he could hopefully see better and discern whether or not there were indeed berries there. He tosses a treat whenever the creature finishes one of the treats from before, always ever closer to the gazebo so that the creature would be forced to inch forward ever so slightly. He had no luck for the longest time to see the tail of the beast, due to its finicky nature.
He steadies on with the plan until finally the creature is close enough that he could just see its tail from his position and it would seem that the creature...

Renathan had spent another couple of months too busy to go out to the Garden any longer than to do the most basic bits of weeding. Even worse, the garden always grew so wild in the spring, so all of that work was basically for naught after just a couple of days between. As was customary for springtime, his workplace had began to wind down. All of the winter holidays were long over, and the incredibly stressful Vakrah season was also over. Renathan found himself working through his queue quickly, though he was already gearing up for wedding season. At least most of the jobs for Wedding Season were much simpler to work on than those for the holidays (which were often much more varied!). He found himself some time to perform the spell to allow him to be away from Auburn, and then he made a beeline for the garden to find the dragonoak he had there as quickly as possible. It wasn't that Renathan didn't want to be around Auburn, in fact he took her to the Garden on regular excursions all the time just to sit in peace, but today he wanted to do some extra work with his Dragonaok Faebuck, and she was generally quite aggressive to smaller animals. He suspected that perhaps she was a little bit of a hunter. Sure, there was only the tiniest of chances that she might actually managed to hurt his beloved Familiar (He sincerely doubted that) he wasn't going to take the chance. He'd found that though he typically had pretty decent luck, it never seemed to help him out whenever push came to shove. Faebuck generally slept either on top of or beneath a large tree stump that was covered in some fairly large but very useless mushrooms. It really depended on whether or not the Dragonoak felt like sunning at that moment which one- and it seemed today that she wanted to sun. [2]

Faebuck had slept most of the time that he had been around her last. He'd seen her quite a few times since, but Renathan tended not to try to both any of the denizens of his Garden unless there was a reason to. It wasn't that he didn't like playing with them, only that he really enjoyed seeing the animals reacting naturally to the environment in the more wild parts of his garden (or at least, the parts that he liked to think of as more wild). Faebuck tended to be the second most feral-acting creature he had here (the other was the Trick Serpent he also had in his garden) and he tended to leave her alone to keep from stressing her. However, she was in season at the moment, and he meant to see if she would produce this season. She hadn't the last time that he had attempted to check, so he wondered if maybe he wasn't doing something right with her husbandry. [3]

Faebuck seemed really calm in her position on the top of the giant tree stump. He wondered if at some point the mushrooms would completely overtake and decompose the stump, but it didn't seem like they ever made any kind of progress that Renathan could see. The tree trunk had been clear cut about a tenth of the way up the very tall and broad length of it straight across, so it was very smooth. Faebuck was curled up on that smooth and flat surface, the leaves on her back flattened partially to capture more of the rays of the sun. During the Winter, Renathan's dragonaok tended to sleep more often. Now that they were in the throes of spring though, she was moving more frequently and apparently taking advantage of the few moments between rainstorms that they were having. The mammalian hangs back for a moment, a little away from the mushroom covered stump. [4]

Faebuck was snoring, and it was very loud. She was relatively smallish (well, a little big for a plant creature maybe, but most certainly small for a Dragonaok) and it was a little shocking to hear such a small creature making such a loud noise. Especially since it was, for all intents and purposes, basically a plant. Renathan didn't want to startle the creature out of slumber- while this one couldn't necessarily breathe fire he knew from experience that dragonoak could cause a lot of damage if they are frustrated for any reason. So he simply goes to sit down in front of the stump where he had a little bench standing in front of a tree that often put off fruit during some part of the year or another and he took a moment to brush off the debris that had collected there over the winter. He watches the creature for a moment, and notices that she has opened her eyes. [5]

Faebuck was a fairly normal looking Dragonoak. She had bright lemon-colored eyes that made them easy to spot against her olive 'scales', if one were to call them that. Her underbelly was a slightly bluer and lighter shade than that; and on the points of her body she had a nearly purple looking hue. The helmet-like dome shape on the top of her head was the most vibrant purple that Renathan thought he'd ever seen on a non-customized animal. Her front limbs were pointed much lighter than her hind limbs were, all the way down to the tips that could have almost been claws if the creature wasn't mostly a plant. She opens her eyes and sits up to stare at him for a moment. He was most definitely a rather abnormal thing to be seen in her territory (and she did seem quite territorial!) but he had been there before and she didn't seem to deem him a threat. [6]

After a moment of staring at Renathan and perhaps even deciding what to do about the situation, she yawns (opening her mouth incredibly wide) and then she gets up. She stretches out all of her limbs and then whips her tail back and forth before she makes another circling curl around the round cross-section of the stump and then she lays down again- this time facing completely away from Renathan. She glances once over her shoulder with half-lidded eyes (obviously she was quite intent on taking that nap!) before she stood her leaves straight up (to lessen the amount of sun that she was getting he assumed) and laid her head back down. Well, that was that! Renathan lets out a breath he had been holding. He'd been just a tad worried that she might be grumpy and either try to snarl at him or move elsewhere (much more likely). He didn't want to go chasing her down through the garden at all. [7]

The russet mammalian was more than a little tired today. He'd finished up a piece the night before that had been quite a bit of work; it was fine tuned work in fact. He'd been slumped over for quite some time getting the last whorl of metal shaped up just right, and by the time he'd finished it his back felt like his back was made of crumbling bricks instead of flesh and bone. His back was still stiff today, even though his bed was excellent quality and very soft. He leans back across the bench in order to crack his back, and once his back does crack it makes what was probably the most distracting and annoying sound that it could have managed to make. Renathan winces beneath his mask, but his back does feel a little bit of relief in that moment. The dragonoak's leaves twitch a little at the sound, though. [8]
