Despite the concern that the human had about their well earned misgivings about the mansion's possible sentience or perhaps even sinister nature, they did have to admit that June was their favorite mansion month. It was a little hotter outside than they would have preferred, but otherwise, it was always such a nice time this time of year. The Firefly Festival was well worth the wait, with beautiful fireworks and lights of all kinds to be had. Of course, Morgan would have to take Millicent to see some fireworks this year, but for now it was important that the human focus entirely on the fastest growing of their whelps, Impi. The uncouth petite chick was gnawing at her bone, and was beginning to do as she was told, surprisingly enough. The brash little beast brushed past Morgan as they pushed open the gate for her to enter the grounds. "Upstart chick." Morgan growled, beneath their breath. [32]

The grounds were beautiful, upstart chick sarane or no. Impi was anything if not adventurous and a little bit snarky. She turned to look at Morgan with an expression that the human was not able to ascertain the meaning of or the reason for. Something like a bit of a challenge, mixed with the glare of an underdog. The human was unsure exactly what they had done to deserve such a rankling glare, but they ignored it pointedly after the first glance. There was no need to have the little brat challenging them this early. She hardly had her little horn nubs growing in, and her egg tooth was still stubbornly holding on, despite the fact that there was no need for it to do so- her eggshell (though kept by Morgan) was no longer anywhere around her. They didn't want her to go hiding in it at every opportunity. [33]

The gate was closed behind the human. The gate itself wasn't all that interesting this month, but it wasn't concerning like it was the month prior to this one, either, that it was so nondescript. Plain, wrought iron. The strange seat that had been made into it had been odd enough for pause, but only just so. It was much more important to keep up with little Impi, for now. Speaking of that, the little beast seemed to catch sight of something that interested her in that moment. The human could literally detect the second that she found whatever it was. It must have finally ignited the little hen's interest in hunting, because she went off really fast after that for such a little creature, scrabbling against the ground for purchase and finally catching the dirt and grass in her sickle claws. Morgan was thoroughly impressed, their hands on their hips and mouth just a tad slack. [34]

That was, until Impi darted into the grass, still clutching her bone in her jaws. Morgan immediately rolled their eyes, and then took off after the little beast. Just how did the blasted animal expect to catch whatever it was that she had found that excited her predatory instinct just a bit ago if she had something in her mouth and couldn't clamp down on it? Of course, they had heard in the past that it was not uncommon for sarane to know how to hunt from the second they were hatched. If not, they would surely die, as the hen sarane did not hunt for her little ones. She wouldn't run them off of a kill while they were hatchlings, but she didn't need to eat nearly as much as they in most cases. So it didn't really surprise the scientist that Impi had that same instinct, despite being fed all the time by hand. [35]

The mansion grounds this time of month had a particular quirk that Morgan could remember from the year previously, and that was something they noticed far too late. As soon as their boots touched the tall grass, sparks of fireworks hot out, or at least that was what it looked like. It was in fact embers, but far too small and ejected at far too much a force to actually cause any wildfires, at least not from these plants themselves. However, it shocked Morgan a bit, mostly because they didn't go off before whenever Impi had done her best to run off into the brush after whatever the blasted thing was. The human wasn't afraid for Impi really, though, more for whatever it was that Impi had found. Impi was a right terror, a true dangerous beast, and whatever it was would certainly be toast by the time Morgan was able to even see where she had went. [36]

It wasn't long during Morgan's tromping through the fireworks grain, which otherwise would be beautiful if not for the fact that they were currently being practically assaulted by bright lights and probably smelled of phosphorous or sulfur, that they were able to lay eyes upon a particularly rustling patch of the grain heads. Yes, Morgan thought. This was a sure proof that the petite sarane was there! They were excited at first, until a horrid noise split through the air and Morgan realized with a start that it was some kind of a SCREAM. Not from the sarane, though, but that didn't really give them any amount of comfort. "Impi, NO, no, spit it out, DON'T EAT THAT!" They called out, pushing past the grasses and trying to get to the creature. They made it there just in time to jerk Impi away from a small creature that Impi had been attacking. "No, Impi, BAD, D-Don't EAT THAT!" They said to her, harshly. However, Impi had managed to get the creature's tail between her jaws, and Morgan having grabbed Impi and jerked her up had also managed to lift up the unfortunate prey animal that she had been attempting to eat. The creature attempted to fight for it's life, but couldn't quite defeat gravity in the same way that it probably would have been able to defeat Morgan and Impi without it. If it's desperation seemed to be any indicator of that, anyway. "Impi Nn-n-n-NO Don't EAT THAT!" They called out, finally giving the little sarane a tiny tremor of a shake. Impi was surprised at that, and dropped the horrible thing. It scurried off into the bushes, and Morgan waited until it had a good head start to place Impi back on the ground. "Geeze." They murmured. All of that drama gave Morgan a reason to want to teach Impi the 'don't eat that' command. It would be tantamount, what with her being like this. The human glanced up for two seconds to see where they were, and they realized that the field seemed to stretch on for miles! Just how were they going to be able to swing getting to the mansion with the mansion grounds being like this? The human sighed, and looked down just in time to see Impi grab her bone from where she had been hiding it (clever beast) and then hold it up proudly. Well, she missed her meal ticket (thank goodness, Morgan had no idea what it was!) but she had been able to retain her precious bone. The human rolled their eyes. The next hour was spent with Morgan trying to navigate out of the great sea of fireworks grass. [39]

The grass was about shoulder high on Morgan, and of course putting off annoying sparks in the process. It was beautiful to watch, but horrid to walk through. They spent the next hour walking while hollering 'don't eat that' every time the little upstart beast tried to eat something she wasn't supposed to, which had to be once every couple of minutes. It was a travesty to Morgan's patience, but eventually Impi began understanding that when Morgan hollared that, she wasn't supposed to eat whatever the heck it was that she had been trying to eat. Still, the repetition had to go on strong, and Morgan made sure to use plenty of treats, now that the petite sarane chick was putting her bone down more often than she had been earlier. She must be rather hungry, Morgan thought simply. A little hungry chick, that now knew not to eat things when Morgan told her not to, thank goodness. [40] - [End of 'Don't Eat That!']

Morgan was pretty proud of the process they had made with the little sarane whelp, even though they were quite anxious about raising sarane again after the Waar incident. The little whelp quickly goes to get her bone to gnaw on it, and Morgan tries to decide whether or not to continue doing any kind of exploration for this month. It was nearly over, and they didn't want to get caught here at night. They had been hoping to spend more time with the little whelp, especially since she was growing super quickly and would need to be well trained since she was a tier three hen and all. "Well Impi, W-what do you think?" Morgan whispered in the direction of the small sarane whelp, who of course did not answer because she was busy gnawing on her beloved bone.
The human stood in the field of ruby-grass, feeling the wind on their arms.

Morgan returned to the mansion towards the end of the seventh month. They'd been here before during this time period, so they knew what to expect to some degree. That was enough for them to be sure that it would be fine to bring their lotine along with them. That being said, the lotine was in no way happy about being removed from her home to go to a place she had never seen before. Morgan could tell that she was distasteful of this. They may not have been training her or working one on one with her yet, but they had watched her enough in the garden to be able to tell that this was not her usual (sad) face. However, they were sure that after a bit of a swim in some new water, she would probably cheer up at least a small amount. The human wasn't sure how long they would be out here, however.

Perdita was a beautiful creature, really. Lotine where well known as 'dragons of the water', and though they looked nothing like Dragons to Morgan, there was NO WAY they were going to pass up gaining ownership of a creature purported to be a dragon or pseudo-dragon of any kind if they didn't have to forgo such a thing. However, Morgan found theirself uninterested in the various colors of natural Lotine. From pale brown to pale white with varying hues of cool colors, Morgan just wasn't all that interested. Eventually, however, Morgan payed for a service that would provide them with a small lola, a unique one, at that. The berry had costed them a good penny, not that it mattered to them. Perdita had come out of that (and of course was grown using a potion) and Morgan was quite content with her.
Until now, however, they'd been content just to watch her.

Perdita moved on land with much less finesse than she moved on water with. The human couldn't help but marvel at the way she swam in the brook that ran through their estate and into the garden itself. Her spotted form was warm and autumnal, and something about that had piqued the human's interest in removing her from the garden for some amount of learning things about her. She seemed almost sad most of the time, and Morgan wasn't sure what it was about her that struck that chord in them. Perhaps it was her face, which was almost always in a sort of soul-ful gaze. Almost like a puppy, begging. The human wasn't sure exactly why that was, since the mother did not seem to have any sort of facial deformity. Perhaps it was a secondary effect of the berry? The human couldn't find any other defect, though they had watched her often and had her checked by a vet several times.

Nothing seemed to be wrong with the painted lotine, at least, so Morgan was putting that to the test today by taking her out to the mansion. The outer grounds this month were deceivingly grassy, but Morgan knew better. Thankfully, their pants kept the sand intermixed with the grass from getting caked to the fabric of their socks, which used to frustrate them. The ground was soft enough to keep Perdita from being harmed while she moved across land, following Morgan if only because Morgan was feeding her fishes, that were tossed to her every now and again. It was an easy-going day, if not a little too hot. There wasn't much more that Morgan hated than either extreme heat or extreme cold. However, Morgan was planning to actually go into the mansion today. The mansion loomed from beyond the inner gate, a leaning tower of driftwood threatening to crash down. Morgan knew it would not, however.
