Training was quite the chore, and despite that it had to be done. Morgan was certainly unexcited about the premise of this trick, but it would perhaps prove useful in the future whenever it was time to break the hen. Though training was practically impossible when the hormones of maturity kicked in, the beasts still understood to some degree the training they had been presented with in the past. Behaviorally, teaching a critter to stay was perhaps one of the better options, since battle training was a horrid idea before the process was to begin. Impi's would be no different, Morgan would not waste their time teaching her to fight before she even began to grow up! They continued the repetition process for the lesson to get her to stay, using the same hand signal consistently enough to get her to understand what it meant whenever the hand signal was given. [19]

Morgan was sure that the creature had gotten the stay behavior by now, but they were not quite done assuring theirself of that fact. Creatures could sometimes be incredibly stubborn and forget things easily, so the human spent as much time as possible repeating this 'stay' training until finally both of them seemed quite bored with the entire charade. The scientist decided it was time to take a break, and they promptly started over to the nearby bench they had found earlier to take a break. Impi followed since she'd been given a treat, and Morgan turned around mid-way to give her the stay hand signal. Immediately the hen stood there, still, as Morgan went to sit down. Assured that she knew the command now, Morgan called her over using the whistle for 'come here', and the hen started her little romp on over to Morgan. Pleased with this, the human gave her a treat. Morgan knew that there were a few more items on the list of 'things to make sure Impi knows before she grows up to be an even bigger monster', and they also knew that they hadn't really scratched the surface of checking out the mansion this month. They took a quick break, and then reluctantly handed over Impi's bone to the little brat. Immediately the blue-eyed devil was excited with her having 'won'. Morgan managed to keep theirself from whispering 'for now' at the end of thinking of that. It should keep the little monster from chewing on anything of import while Morgan was busy investigating the inner mansion grounds this month- and perhaps even the mansion itself? That was the ultimate hope, but they weren't sure for how long they would be here this month indeed. Some creatures tired out more quickly than others. That was also a concern Morgan had. [21]

Impi didn't seem to be interested in slowing down for now, though. She chewed on her bone excitedly, and Morgan couldn't help but sigh and wonder exactly how they were going to manage keeping her in bones as she got bigger and probably meaner. They shouldn't have started this horrid habit, but now that it was done, they might as well put it to decent use. The human lifted theirself up off of the seat, and turned to look at it with some small amount of curiosity. There wasn't much of import or interest about the thing itself- no, it had just finally sunk in for the usually rather observant individual that this seat shouldn't really be here. However, it was, regardless of logic. The mansion had never had one of these for them waiting in the wings in the past? What a strange trick it was... But why was it like this at all? [22]

After a moment of puzzling out the intricacies of the mansion's rather strange but sometimes almost sentient-esque actions and ultimately failing a the attempt as they usually did, the human decides readily to continue on. Of course, minuscule Impi had not yet been taught to follow, and the human had been using the bone as leverage to convince her to do as she was told to do. Of course, they had just handed over the bone to Impi, so now their tiny bit of leverage was all but squandered. They could take the bone back, but Morgan was hesitant to do so. It might foster some amount of ill will between them, and that was certainly not ideal in the slightest. After mulling this over for a small modicum of time, Morgan decides to take this in stride. They'd teach her to follow right now! Somehow... They would have to consider this carefully. [23]

Impi was having the time of her life, chewing on that bone. She hardly put a dent into it- thank goodness sarane tended to have excellent dentition (there was probably heavy competition that managed to genetically ensure this- poor dentition could probably kill a predator in the wild, let alone such a species as Sarane that spent the majority of their time fighting with others of their own kind) so it wasn't surprising to Morgan past the initial concern to see that the bones did eventually get pulverized between her sharp and thick teeth as she ground them down. The human knew that she wouldn't pay much attention now that she had the bone, but they hoped that perhaps they had managed to procure some amount of goodwill from the vicious animal. Sarane really could be the worst- and supposedly they were pseudo-dragons? They were not worthy of the name 'dragon'. [24]

However, the human had a soft spot for the beast all the same. Impi was such a small sarane, at least for now, and she reminded Morgan of the precocious young Waar- back before he had grown up. Part of that nostalgic heart pain played upon dread- the human did not want to have to break Waar, and they certainly didn't want to break little Impi. It was hard to imagine this little bone chewing chick as a giant bone crushing monstrosity. The human frowned, but pulled a piece of treat from the baggie they carried them in anyway, intending on attempting to catch Impi's attention once more with it, and try to lead her into the mansion's inner grounds so that the real fun could begin. They intended to teach her as much as possible today, since the little beasts grew at such estranged rates that Morgan had no idea which would need the training cardinally. [25]

The 'follow me' behavior was undoubtedly an easy one to teach in most cases, but Morgan was quite sure that Impi was going to puzzle out some way to make them miserable during the process of training her to react properly to it. Already, she was much more intrigued with her bone than she was with anything that Morgan had going on at the moment. It wasn't really surprising to the humanoid at all. "Impi!" They called out to her across the waves of golden-red grass (when did that happen? wasn't it as verdant as ever and cut quite short just a bit ago?) to the diminutive chick. The creature hardly cast it's ultramarine gaze over the human, but she had looked up and stopped chewing, if only for a half of a breath. Morgan was glad that there was at least some tiny amount of success here, no matter how small. [26] - [Start 'Follow']

They held out the treat between a thumb and forefinger, and then used the whistle to give the 'follow' command. This time, Impi gave true pause. She seemed to consider the possibility that Morgan was trying to get her to do something else, and finally she stood up, with the bone still in her mouth, as if refusing to let it leave her sight now that she had managed to procure it from Morgan's tyrannical grasp. The human gave the whistle again, and then began walking away. It worked for every other attempt at training a creature to follow them on command before, and because Morgan had decided to start this bit of training later on in the session, the petite chick had some amount of desire to do as she was told. At least the tiniest amount of it. If only to keep her bone from being unfairly removed from her again. [27]

Morgan sighed to theirself, aware of the fact that though they were making some progress, it still wasn't a great amount of it indeed. It was going to be a long fight between them to get the creature to be able to really care about anything other than that bone. Impi was really going to be difficult in the future, wasn't she? The human glanced over their shoulder back at the little beastling, and found with delight that she was following at a rather close clip. Good! Even if she didn't know what she was doing quite yet, she was performing the task admirably. The scientist proceeded to offer her a treat, and of course, though they could tell by looking at her that Impi appreciated the gesture to some degree, the little beast absolutely refused to let go of the bone that she was now carrying with pride. Wonderful. [28]

They knew that the bone was going to make this difficult in some capacity or another, but they really hadn't considered the possibility that Impi would straight up refuse a treat in order to hold onto that bone due to some sort of deep seated mistrust of the human, that perhaps they would take the bone away from her and she would be forced to have to wait for it again, as if this was some sort of injustice that must not be tolerated. The human sighed anyway, and instead reached out to pet the tiny whelp. Impi handedly moved out of the way surprisingly quickly, and the human realized that, even more disconcertingly, this was going to be even more difficult than they had previously considered or prepared for. What a little beast! She was absolutely not anything like any critter that Morgan had worked with before working with Impi. [29]

Still, the training went on. Morgan would give the command on the whistle, and then walk away. After the first few times that this happened, Impi realized that this was what the sound meant, that she was to follow. Impi wasn't dumb, she was perhaps like any other vulticus that would be kept by someone as a simple pet in the Labs City, save for the fact that Impi was at least twice as toothy and fifty times as rankled as any cave vulticus would ever get at a pint of the size. The human tried to give Impi treats, but each time they were refused due to the little beast's absolute refusal to drop the bone that was her prized treasure. At the very last, they finally made it to the opening of the gate. It was hard won, but it did seem that Impi had learned what she was meant to learn in the process regardless. Now that Impi was following Morgan on command, the human decided to take a short break between their prior training session and the next one to do some well-earned exploration on the mansion grounds. The human knew what to expect since they had been here quite a long time the year previously, but they were ready for things to possibly be different as well. It was not ever a good course of action to fail to prepare for the possibility of the mansion to royally SUBAR any situation that could possibly be screwed up, let alone those that shouldn't be able to be messed up but the mansion managed to make dangerous or frightening without regard to unimportant tasks like maintaining normalcy or continuing to follow logical bounds. Impi was quite gung-ho about the adventure up to this point, so the humanoid knew to keep a good eye on her as well. They took a breath, prepared for the absolute worst possible thing, and then grasped the gate in uncertain hands. [31]
