They continued until finally they were close enough to the inner gate of the mansion grounds for Morgan to rationalize finding a place to sit. Normally, a rock would do, but Morgan was quite excited to see that the mansion actually had a bench built into the gate this month. Morgan perhaps should have questioned the simplicity of this arrangement, since the mansion was not uncommonly acting the part of trickster, but they were quite tired from holding the bone up for so long (they had long since found that Murp bones did best for sarane hatchlings, at least the thinner flat bones for now- they'd find thicker ones for her when she got older) so they simply trotted over to the bench, and took a seat. The sarane hatchling trotted up and unceremoniously sat, glaring at the bone with her eyes of sky blue. What sort of tail would she have as an adult? [6]

The human finally decides upon a course of action. They would first attempt to train the chick her name, and with any luck they would move on to more important aspects of obedience that they felt had made breaking Waar perhaps a bit simpler of a task. Of course, no breaking was a simple task at all, but perhaps without the obedience training, Waar would have had an easier time of having turned Morgan into a greasy spot on the pit wall. Instead, the human had defeated him handedly. Did they even get thrown once? If they did, they did not remember it. The human held the bone above the hen's head, and she leapt to try to get it, forcing the human to lift the bone. "Impi... Impi!" The blonde human called. The coppery-colored chick looked at Morgan with some amount of curiosity, but then turned to the bone itself. [7] - [Start 'Name']

That was a bit of progress, Morgan decided. They suddenly wondered how they were going to be able to give this little lady beast a treat for doing 'good'. Most of the time, they simply gave treats, or gave praise, but with Impi it might be difficult due to her hyper fixation on bones. Finally, the human simply pulled from their pocket a few simple treats, murp meat having been cubed and cooked, and they tossed one at Impi. The treat bounced off of her face, and she tumbled after it into the grass. It would be adorable if not for the fact that she was an absolute barbarian of a creature. It was quite honestly terrifying to behold what she did to these bones. A bone hardly lasted a day for her. "Impi!" The human called to her. After retrieving the treat, Impi looked at Morgan with a baleful glare. [8]

Time would continue to go on as the human attempted with varying levels of success to coerce the rather barbarous creature to do as she was told. It was not a futile effort, however, as the humanoid could tell that she was purposefully ignoring them sometimes. With a huff, the human continued with their efforts, redoubling their attempts at getting her to realize that this was her name. Perhaps if Impi had been a tat-lung instead, she would more easily have learned this task. However, with enough determination from Morgan, they finally won out. Whenever the name was called, the little beast would look at Morgan in expectation of a treat, but obvious preference for the bone. Such a thing was as good as 'love' from a creature like this one. The human severely doubted that sarane were capable of such an emotion. The training had to continue, however, they were not halfway completed with even this simple task. [9]

The trained was repeated several times, again. The name would be called, the hen would reluctantly respond. It was just like pulling teeth for the both of them, as was to be expected. The human wasn't really sure what they had expected, back when they had sealed the deal for the procurement of these beasts. Of course they would choose this particular one to work with first. It was those spectacular blue eyes that had them mesmerized. Supposedly, only sarane with white sarane ancestors showed up blue-eyed. With luck and determination, the pair had finally come to a sort of understanding about Impi's name. Impi would respond to it, and the human would treat her. The eventual understanding was that Impi wanted her bone as soon as possible. Finally, Morgan called out her name for the last time, "Impi!" This time when she responded, quickly but boredly, Morgan was certain that Impi knew her name at least. [10] - [End of 'Name']

The first taste of success came with a bittersweet feeling of melancholy in the pit of the human's stomach that threatened to rise up into their throat. They weren't even a quarter of the way done with the first list that tended to be schooled to creatures, yet they were already feeling quite ill about the entire endeavor. With a clenched jaw, the human stood up from the seat, but did not walk further out into the grass than was absolutely required for the next bit of training to be properly conducted. They reached beneath their shirt and procured a special dragon-shaped whistle that had been warmed with their body heat, and then whistled the command they always used for 'come here'. Impi immediately looked very intently at Morgan, as if she realized that this meant something. Then, Morgan held out the bone. At this, Impi came galumphing towards the human excitedly. That was a desirable outcome! The human tossed a treat at the whelp, who insolently went after the bone instead. The chick was unable to reach the bone, which was held far up above her head, so when she landed back down in a heap she snarled at the human with a voracious sort of attitude before snuffling about in the grass to find the treat instead. She was able to locate it, and the human made note of this fact. Sarane apparently had decent noses, considering. At this, the human stepped a few steps away, and repeated the process with the whistle. This time, Impi gave the human an inquisitive look, and then took a step forward, watching the human's face and the bone intently. Soon enough, Impi had come running, and the blond tossed her another treat for her trouble. She watched the human with a curiosity that was tinged with something more sinister. [12]

Perhaps Morgan should have been more alarmed at this chick's facial expression, but they decided quickly that it was simply the way of sarane to be somewhat barbaric. Their entire being was built around fighting, at least for the drakes, and the human doubted that a flight-winged hen's freshness would be tolerated by any drake worth his salt. The human was sure that tier three hens, given their propensity to have to be broken, probably did not take well to finding just any drake to breed to. They considered this idea as they proceeded to move forward with the 'come here' behavior and command training. Impi was learning relatively quickly, but then again, the human did know her parentage. She had a psychic-injected hen somewhere back there, and that tended to make creatures a little more intelligent, if only the tiniest amount, than others of their same ilk. It wouldn't surprise them if that were the case here. [13]

Impi was picking up the come command with relative ease, but she continually kept sight of that bone. Her jaw was just as clenched as Morgan's was, and the human could tell that the fresh little horror was drooling and trying not to get it everywhere. Just great, they weren't sure how much longer they would be able to keep her at bay with her slobbering about like that. For now, she was dealing with learning the command anyway. They adjusted their glasses, and got right back to it. The command for 'come here' would be whistled, Impi would begrudgingly head on over, and then they would repeat it again. Impi was treated when she did well, but Morgan stopped giving her treats whenever she hesitated. Impi soon enough stopped hesitating, putting her all into the commands as she was bade to do. The human was growing pleased with her ability to heed the command. [14]

However, they were not quite finished yet. Morgan had their agenda set to where as soon as Impi stopped hesitating, they began lengthening the amount of distance that Impi would have to move in order to close the gap between them. Impi took this as a mockery of her determination to get the bone, because of course a hen of her stature would be as stubborn as an elderly murp heifer. However, Impi was coming to the command each time that she was bade to do so with the command whistle, and the human could not argue against that. Still, they repeated this training again and again, knowing that if they slowed up, Impi might take that as a defeat on Morgan's part. Impi continued to come on command repeatedly, but her eyes were on the bone the entire time, even though she knew what she was supposed to do. [15]

Finally, after all that work, Morgan was convinced that Impi had learned to come on command. They took a quick moment to survey their surroundings and ensure that the mansion had not tried to throw any tricks their way as it was wont to do. For now, the outer grounds of the mansion just beyond the gate itself were fairly normal. The grass was green. The sun was hot. It was awful to sit about outside like this. The human hated the summer, and it was just beginning it's blight upon them in drought's sunny doses. Gone were the rainy days of spring and the stormy delights that it brought. The human frowned, and considered that 'at least it wasn't cold' and that was that. They knew that beyond the gate, it would be different. They wanted to get Impi's training done first, or at least their first few things, before actually entering in that area. [16] - [End of 'Come']

The next behavior that was on the list that Morgan kept was to get Impi to stay. That, they figured, should be simple. Stay was generally one of the easiest commands they could teach a creature of any stature, and it would be important for Impi later on, at least they hoped. Morgan stepped purposefully up to Impi, who was glaring them down with those ice-blue eyes of hers, and they raised their hand in a 'stop' signal, the same one that they always used for this kind of work. Impi looked at Morgan's hand for a second, and then at the bone intently. The human probably would have face-palmed had they had the chance to do so. Instead, they went to step away. Impi came to follow, taking a quick step before Morgan gave a sharp 'NO!' noise that the whelp shrank away from immediately. She understood that as 'bad'- they had spent some time together before this after all. [17] - [Start 'Stay']

A sharp growl in response from the hen later, and they continued their work. They repeated the hand signal action several times, where they would walk up to the creature, perform the hand signal, and then go to walk away. The hen balked after the first few times that she accidentally mis-stepped, and finally was halted into inaction. Normally this would be an issue, but she was actually taking the proper action at this point in time, with this particular behavior. After Morgan walked away for a few feet, they returned, and with praise offered the coppery sarane chick her snack. This seemed to prompt some sarane pondering from the little barbarian, and Morgan gave her time to consider this by stepping away for a bit, after giving the command again. This would cement that she was supposed to stay there whenever the command signal was given. Already, the hen was picking it up. [18]
