The stone hit Reoz and bounced off his neck. He hardly seemed to notice, and didn't even look in the direction the stone bounced off in. He made a soft hissing sound and something caught his attention. Ashe's gaze followed the corpse's and he saw it was a bird flying from one tree to the next. The movement must have caught Reoz's attention. Ashe shook his head, wondering at the fact that a bird could grab his eye and he wouldn't even react when under attack. If you could call his owner throwing rocks, 'under attack.'
Ashe decided to try again. He had a rock in each hand, ready to throw. The first one went flying, sailing through the air, and thunked against the brute's skull. He readied to throw the second one but waited to see his reaction. This time, the walking corpse flinched, much later than anyone else would have - but would that mean he would want to get away?

Reoz's gaze did not look angered, like a normal pet might be if it was getting hit by something out of nowhere. It might not even be registering that he was under attack. Ashe threw another stone, and the beast let himself be hit without an issue. Time to start Ashe's other idea, something he had never really used to teach a pet before. Because most animals he had, tended to have some sort of self preservation or were adverse to being hurt. Reoz didn't seem to care at all either way. So Ashe had something else to bribe him with: treats. He held up a chunk of meat, like murp jerky, and waved it until Reoz caught on and spotted it. He started coming toward Ashe, but the man stomped his foot and said "No! Back!", trying to be as menacing as possible. He was not about to be bulldozed by an overeager corpse puppy! Reoz got the message, probably moreso in the 'it's not worth the effort to fight for food' than fear of Ashe himself.

Once Ashe had his attention, and the shred of his patience, he tossed the treat to one side, and threw a rock toward the other side. Reoz moved mostly out of the way of the rock to lunge for the treat, but he wasn't the speediest thing around and it still glanced off his shoulder. But that was improvement! Ashe was going to need a lot of treats, he was beginning to see. But the good thing was he could use these little bite sized pieces, and Reoz was so big that he wouldn't get full up any time soon. Thus, he could use food as a motivator a lot longer.
Ashe tried this again, making him lunge for the food while he threw another rock his way. This time, he missed, though it was in part to Ashe himself. "Good boy, Reoz!" Ashe praised him, using the name so he would know he was talking to him and not just talking. Reoz wasn't one to listen to chatter for the sake of it.

This was not the most exciting thing to do, if Ashe was being completely honest, but he also couldn't complain too much. As a guy, he enjoyed throwing things at people well enough. Even if this wasn't a ball, a la dodge ball style, it was the closest he could get to it! He would toss a treat sometimes to the right, sometimes to the left, but always about a split second later, he would throw a rock the other way. Sometimes, the rock would miss completely, and sometimes the rock would glance off of a body part. Reoz never seemed to notice this, and that worried Ashe that he wasn't learning anything at all. So Ashe consulted his bag of tools he'd brought for this very type of case and found he had some baseball sized balls. Hard enough, but not exactly the same. Lighter than stones would be of the same size, but solid and packing a punch.

Ashe used the same size of treats, since Reoz didn't need more motivation, at least not yet. So the treat went one way, and the ball was thrown the other way. Reoz was hit harder this time, since the ball was bigger and wasn't thrown as far away on Ashe's end. Reoz appeared to have actually felt that one, because there was a ripple reaction over his body as he shook off the blow. He was unconcerned, but at least he finally felt it! Motivated, Ashe was able to continue on, tossing a treat this way and the ball that way, then the treat this way and the ball that way. The corpse was starting to limber up, if you could call it that. Getting used to moving. And, if Ashe was able to risk hoping, it seemed like he was starting to not want to get hit. He hadn't quite worked out the thought behind moving out of the way of the attack yet...

Ten times.... Twenty times... Ashe was losing track of how long he had been at this. The corpse had begun to shift his body away from the rock, starting to associate the treat going one way, with an attack coming from the other direction. This was so weird, so different, because with a normal pet, Ashe would not want this behavior being paired up. He would have to untrain it later and fix the damage done. But with a corpse like this? Ashe wasn't sure if there would be any left over negative behavior, he had no idea if he would retain the details that much.
Another ball throw, as another treat is devoured. Ashe only had three balls with him, so he had to pause and run around to collect them between sessions. Reoz watched him lazily, not really caring, but knowing enough to figure out that Ashe was the cause of things happening in his life right now.
Ashe finished up another round, and retrieved the balls once more.

It was time to start adding in some variations! Reoz was starting to be able to shift his body out of the way of those balls. Ashe was getting to be confident in him, when he was able to dodge the balls for two rounds straight, and he continued a few more after that just to be on the safe side. With that under control, it was time for the change up. Ashe started by throwing the treat like normal, but he would throw the ball faster. The first time, the ball made contact before Reoz was able to bend over to get the treat. The Corpse actually made a hissing noise in response to being hit, and paused to look around to find the attacker. Then he grabbed the treat and swallowed. And continued to look around. Was he getting pissed? Had he actually been starting to dodge the hits, and not wanting the pain? Was Ashe actually making progress??

Ashe built upon this change, throwing speed balls and tossing the treats. Reoz started to get annoyed when he continued to get hit, after going for so long without getting hit, and it was obvious that he was trying to move out of the way now. It was hard, it was difficult, but Reoz was starting to get it. Instead of hitting him squarely, it would glance off a shoulder. Instead of making full contact, it would just clip the edge of a limb. Ashe was beyond pleased to see Reoz starting to actually try, even if it was a slow process. He continued on, feeling the burn in his arm especially since he'd started with the heavier balls. Ignoring it, he hit Reoz again, in the ribs, earning another hiss of rage. Again and again, the corpse construct tried to lunge for the treat before he got hit with the ball, but it took another twenty three times before he was able to succeed. But he did it!

Finally. Finally, Reoz was able to dodge one of those balls completely. His flesh, which was of the consistency of a rotting corpse, was starting to purple with blood swelling to the areas. Bruises. Ashe was glad it wasn't true corpse flesh, because he thought that hitting it that many times would probably burst it - and how did you heal up a corpse that was rotting? The flesh ripping when you tried to stitch it up... Ashe shook his head, trying to stop from going down that trail of thought. There was some sort of magic about Reoz that allowed him to animate, and caused him to grow like a normal creature, despite being bits and bobs from things he ate.
"Time for a quick break... What'd'ya say?" Ashe said, feeling strangely breathless and worn out even though it hadn't been him that continuously got hit by projectiles. Corpse or not, Reoz still drank water. It took some coaxing and sweet talking, but Reoz finally went with Ashe, beater of monsters.

The pair of them walked to a nearby stream, Ashe leading with Reoz following a couple of paces behind. He shambled along, taking his time, and loyal enough to his master to stay with him despite the abuse that might have scared away a greater creature. Ashe knelt to the side of the water, put his hands in and washed them a little bit, then he cupped his hands, bringing the water to his face to drink. Reoz went to all fours next to him and dunked half his head in, slurping the water loudly. Part of his jaw was revealed through the flesh, and those sharp teeth glistened. His tongue scooped water into his mouth with the absence of decent lips.
Ashe made sure not to drink down stream from this guy.
Ashe allowed them twenty minutes or so to relax and recuperate, then he led Reoz back to the training place and picked up the balls again. His arm had recovered, though now it protested. He waited for Reoz to come to a stop, then he tossed the treat - and threw the ball.

Reoz was rusty after the break, and he was hit. He gave a grunting hiss, like that of a gator, and gnashed his teeth in frustration. It was like he was saying, this again? And the next time Ashe threw, he moved again. It glanced, just barely hitting, and Ashe could only tell it had because of Reoz's reaction. He'd obviously felt something! So close. When Ashe threw the third one, there was no reaction besides the movement, so that was a success! Ashe threw several more balls, making sure that Reoz dodged each and every one. He seemed to snap back after the break, despite the break in fact. It was Ashe's hope that this would become a habit, so Reoz could dodge whatever came at him, at any time, becoming second nature to him. Normally, Ashe would have to blindfold a creature to get them to adapt to the senses, but Reoz had a handicap and Ashe didn't know if he would need to add that step, to make it second nature. Speedier creatures needed to be brought down; Reoz struggled to catch up.

One more thing Ashe wanted to try: because pets wouldn't always attack from left or right, they might attack from up or down, Ashe wanted to make sure Reoz could start moving faster in those directions as well. So he threw another curve ball. He tossed the treat up in the air, and threw a ball at one of Reoz's legs. The corpse construct wasn't expecting it to go up, just to the side, and he got hurt in his confusion! He grunted and lashed out with the leg, but missed. Ashe threw it the same way again. And again. Reoz started to expect something to come from below, and once he even ignored the treat thrown in order to lift the targeted leg out of the way. Encouraged by this, Ashe skipped the treat portion, and worked on aiming at the legs and getting Reoz to move them. He seemed to catch on quickly, despite not getting treats. It was reward enough right now to not get hit! Ashe threw and threw until he was reliably moving out of the way; and this was at the slower speed, not the fast balls.

Once he had that mastered, Ashe wanted to prepare him for moves up above. He figured he would have to use treats to change the focus, but after that he could probably get away without using treats here, too, so Reoz could figure out how to move out of the way. He tossed the treat to the ground in front of Reoz, then tossed the ball almost straight up, underhand, so it would come down somewhere over Reoz. That was the plan, at least. Reoz went for the treat on the ground, and the ball thumped on his back. He let out a snarl that could make arm hair stand straight up - just ask Ashe! - and thrashed his tail around. Ashe tossed a treat on the ground again, and Reoz went for it; he tossed the ball, and it hit again. Next, Ashe just threw the ball, and Reoz saw it. He wasn't able to dodge and got hit again. Ashe tried the ball again, over and over, but Reoz wasn't able to figure out how to dodge it.

Ashe decided to go back to the basics. Reoz had to be shown how to get out of the way, and the best part was treats. So he threw the treat to the right, further than he had in the earlier stages of this training. Reoz had to take a step and a half to get to it. Good distance. Ashe did it again, tossing it slightly further, so Reoz would move. The corpse construct went for it, and Ashe threw the ball up in the air. It came down on Reoz's hip, glancing off. Reoz snapped his head around to retaliate, but it had already rolled away. Ashe did this a few more times, until things started to click. Before too terribly long, Reoz started to lunge quickly for the treat the instant it was thrown, and he would be fast enough to dodge the falling ball. He was motivated by the thump on the ground, and not on his flesh, and he tried even more to continue progressing.
When Ashe was satisfied he was able to dodge in either direction to get away from an aerial attack, he called for a break. He gathered up their stuff, and they left the park.

Notes: Danger Sense completed in Mansion Reoz devoured 4 creatures in the Pit Returning to the park to complete training Ashe is using Sever Bond at the cost of 4 MP Reoz is level 21.3 before this post. Needs to be 25
Fresh from a few victories, Reoz accompanied Ashe to the park for the second time this month. He was now full, belly still slightly bloated from his last meal, and he had sprouted some new attributes. Ashe watched him with awe, checking him over every couple of hours, because his body continued to change as he digested his prey. Now he would have a chiryma leg, then the skin would slough off and he would have a skinless vulticus leg, and wings and feathers… Yuck. He was quite disgusting, and the smells he was emanating were to puke for. But all of this together also made him quite fearsome and that was what Ashe was counting on. "Now I want you to practice something for me," he said. He'd brought with him his trusty Sarane: Ghidorah and the hen Ivalice. The drake was intimidating in his own right, and he didn't put up with other creatures pushing him around, so Ashe figured he would be great to motivate Reoz into being tough and scary. But he wouldn't be able to be scared, so Ashe also needed the more timid hen. He would practice on Ghidorah, then actually scare the hen in a field test. That was the plan, anyway.
